At first they didn't get it.
"Why is that bad?" Fed asked, his deep voice echoing off the stone walls.
It was Serena who answered him.
"Because it will fill the hole up with water. And were in the hole, unable to get out quickly."
For the first time, I saw panic flicker in Fed's eyes. I'd always thought of him as the strong one. The glue in our team. Seeing that panic made me more frightened then, than I had been all my time down here.
"It's okay guys, we can just dig a side tunnel," I suggested softly.
Ren shook his head. "Then the water would just fill in there and we'd be trapped."
"What about two tunnels?" Uncle asked. "Would that work? One farther up ahead, and to the side, and one down here. We could barricade the one farther up to stop as much water getting in."
Everyone's heads turned simultaneously to Ren, who after thinking about it for a moment nodded.
"If we position it at the right angle, and barricade it completely, yeah, it should work," He said slowly.
Everyone burst into cheers.
"But, we hardly have enough time."
The cheering stopped and everyone's sour moods returned.
"We could at least try." Brace said softly. Everyone turned to him. He ever hardly talked in these discussions.
"Yeah, we could." I said, smiling softly at him. And so we did.
