I sat next to Sirius at breakfast, holding his hand under the table. We hadn't really told anyone we were dating, except our close friends of course, and he wanted to keep it hidden.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked me. I turned to face him, only to notice he was staring at me.
"Food," I admitted, poking my scrambled eggs with my fork. Sirius laughed softly.
"If you're thinking about food, why aren't you eating it?" he asked.
"Because, you're holding my right hand, and if I eat with my left hand, I'll end up getting scrambled eggs up my nose," I replied. He grinned mischievously and held my hand tighter.
"Oh well, Pitch, you'll just have to go without food then," Sirius sighed dramatically. I groaned, and my stomach followed suit.
"Don't worry, Pitch, I'll feed you," Potter said from opposite the table. He offered me a forkful of pork sausage with a broad grin set across his face. I leaned over and grabbed the fork with my teeth, pulling the food off as I sat back down.
"Don't do that," Sirius mumbled, pouting.
"Aww, is Ickle Siwius jeawous?" I asked in a mock baby voice. His face flushed.
"No, 'Ickle Siwius' is not jealous, just... if James feeds anyone, it should be himself," Sirius replied. Remus, who was sitting on the left of me, chuckled.
"Alright, then I'll feed her. I think the poor girl needs to eat," he said, holding out a piece of toast spread with Peck's Anchovette. I leaned closer to get a bite, but Sirius yanked me back.
"Okay, okay. I get the point," he grumbled, letting my hand go. I immediately started shovelling the now-cold food from my overloaded plate into my mouth, earning a laugh from my friends.
Okay, I'll admit, I was very jealous when James fed Pitch. I mean, sure, I was only pretending to like her for a bet, but she was still my girlfriend. Mine. But watching her eating like she'd never seen food before, the jealousy morphed into humour. Well, at least it will be easy for me to keep leading her on for another three weeks. She's beautiful, witty, funny, kind (sometimes), awesome to be around, loyal to her friends, great at pranks, absolutely perf-GET A HOLD OF YOURSELF, SIRIUS BLACK!! I cannot fall for her. No. She's just another girl. There's loads at the school. Chill.
"Um, Sirius, mate, you alright?" Prongs asked, looking concerned.
"I'm fine," I lied. He frowned, obviously hearing the false note in my voice.
"You just look... like you're arguing with yourself... like you're really pissed off with yourself," he replied.
"I'm fine," I repeated. He shrugged and continued eating. Pitch looked up from her food and smiled warmly at me. I smiled back, glad everything was going so well. Of course, My lucky streak had to end at the precise moment Wormtail came in. He skipped to the table and sat on my right. He obviously didn't notice Pitch because he said:
"So, Sirius, how's your bet with James going?"
"What bet?" I asked through clenched teeth, trying to warn him to shut up. Totally clueless, he carried on destroying everything.
"You know, the bet where you had to kiss Pitch and date her for a month before you dumped her to get 10 Galleons and 5 Galleons worth of whatever you want. The one you guys made before the Halloween dance. That bet," he replied, casually dishing himself some food. I heard Pitch's horrified gasp.
"Sirius? Is..is it true? Is what the rat boy says true?" she asked. I could see she was fighting tears.
"Pitch, I can explain," I began. Wormtail, who had finally noticed Pitch, looked horrified.
"All this time... the song... the date... it was all a lie? I trusted you, I cared about you... I-I thought I loved you! Artemis warned me, she told me you couldn't change, but I was too ignorant to see she was right . I believed in you. I thought you cared about me too, but you don't. It was all fake, it was all a game, it was all a bloody lie!!!!" she yelled. She slapped me hard across my face, before running out of the Great Hall, stifling sobs.
I always seem to have the most rotten luck. And I always seem to find myself at the Astronomy tower when I'm feeling upset, or angry. I climbed up onto the roof of the tower, and Summoned a bottle of firewhiskey. The fiery liquid mixed with the taste of my tears as I poured it down my throat. The first bottle seemed to run out far too quickly, so I Vanished it and Summoned another. I didn't care any more. I let the liquor take over, until I felt like an emotionless, drunken zombie.
Staring across the Hogwarts grounds, the Black Lake seemed very appealing, even in the cold weather. It looked like it had a thin layer of ice over it already, although I wasn't seeing things clearly, so I stumbled down to have a look. Gingerly putting my left foot on the water, I watched little cracks appear around it, so I took a couple of steps back, stripped off all my clothes, and sprinted onto the thin ice, which immediately started cracking. three or four steps in, the ice gave way and I sank into the freezing water.
The effect was almost instant. My toes started going numb, and my body was covered in goosebumps. I was so cold, but I ignored it and welcomed the numbness. In about 20 seconds, my whole body was numb, but my heart still ached. I was running out of air, but I swam deeper into the icy darkness. Water plants touched my frozen toes, and a good idea formed in my head. If the water couldn't reach me on the inside, I would let it in. It would end the pain... forever. I blew out my last breath of air in a long stream of bubbles, before inhaling the frigid water. At first, my lungs felt like they were on fire, the pain was so intense.
My memories of my life flashed before my eyes, but not like how they describe it in books and movies. It was more like glimpses of my good memories: meeting my fellow Miscreants; playing all those pranks; getting my letter for Hogwarts; days spent at Hogsmead; Quidditch matches; even my dates with Sirius. A face appeared, coming closer to mine. I smiled as my eyes closed, letting the darkness consume me. And then... Peace.
