One Death Too Far

Told through the eyes of Ryder Greyn, a 6th year Ravenclaw. One Death Too Far tries to show the true horrors of the battle of Hogwarts and the toll it took on those fighting.

2. Another falls

I arrived in the entrance hall to the sounds of frantic students yelling. We weren't prepared for this. No one could've been prepared for this. With death eaters charging in from all angles, students started disappearing before my very eyes. Whether it was because they were dying or had run away I will never know. I did know that we were losing however, I rushed to the nearest student in trouble. I recognised the girl as Susan Bones, she helped me find my way around the castle when I was a first year. And yet, here she was. A death eater standing over her as she cowered in a corner, the hope fleeing from her body. Yet she still looked up to that death eater with as much courage as she could muster and spat at his feet. She was strong, I was not. I just stood there, watching as the hooded figure above her tortured her. It was so horrible. Yet, I did nothing. I was so far in shock that I just stood there, rooted. I'd never wanted to be in a war. I stayed because this school meant everything to me, I didn't owe anything to Potter. I didn't owe him anything...

A glimpse of red suddenly appeared in my peripheral vision and the death eaters wand flew somewhere behind me. Still frozen to the spot but slowly breaking out of it, I heard a voice coming from behind. Yelling at the death eater to leave her. Naturally he didn't and so a green light flew and naturally the second sound I heard was death. Death was the worst sound you could ever imagine, death sounded like laughter and happiness, tears and sadness. But worst of all, death sounded like nothing. It terrified me. How something so full of life, of emotion, of thought, of future, of past. Could just, vanish. Poof. And so the death eater laid there, solid as a rock. I didn't know her, the death eater. They could've had kids, they could be trying to save someone. Or they could just be bad, and twisted and sad and lonely. So many things that I'll never know about them, things that I never will.
