The Horror You Inspire

The days changed like you wouldn't believe.
When he was here, the grass was green, the flowers were pink, & the night was so bright.
Life had sunshine & smiles, and all those things us pessimist's despise.
Home wasn't like it used to be, because a house was never home, & he was never really planted like the flowers that lead up to their house.
He was home, and anywhere they went, as long as they were together, they were home.
There is, in fact, no place like it.
After he died, everything suddenly lost taste, like he had taken it with him.
So, she had to become friendly with the darkness and all sorts of scum, like the sewer rats & the Venus fly traps that she thought sometimes talked to her.
She had become comfortably numb.
All the animals spoke highly of him, and they only really fear the Seventh Son, his offspring.
It wasn't quite prophecy, but his rage & evil were predicted not long ago; regardless, she ignored it for as long as she could, because ignorance is bliss, right?

20. Chapter 19

The neighbourhood kids had a game where they would dare each other to walk on the lawn of Maybelyn's mystic shop, and whoever got closest to the front porch would win, and Maybelyn supposed it was because the house was haunting from the outside, and she let the kids go because it was all fun and games, but today she had to take an extra precaution because a older boy walked past everyone straight to the door and touched it, and she can't have children in here with Mitchell being the lunatic he is.

"I know your games and I see no problem with them until you make a move like this, by coming all the way up the porch and touching the door.
Please know this is no place for children and you are prohibited from coming in" Maybelyn says to the boy.

"Why, cause you have dead bodies in there? Or jars with eyeballs and brains?" The boy retorts.

"Because it is no place for children. If you would like a session, you must have a parent, and please keep your games off the front porch" Maybelyn repeats.

"My moms are scared of you, they say you're no good to be around" the boy adds.

"Well they're right. Now run along" Maybelyn finishes and closes the door.

The boy walks off the porch and back to his group of friends, assumedly to tell them how it went, but with an intense amount of drama, as is expected from someone around 13 years old.

Maybelyn goes back to her office and organises things to keep herself busy, like stacking her tarot cards and adjusting the furniture in her office, just waiting for walk-ins.

No regulars visit that day, and Maybelyn says a special prayer of thanks for Mitchell not being around to pick off more customers.

At the end of the day, Mitchell arrives home and Maybelyn quickly makes it to her room to escape any vile confrontation, or even eye contact with her son.

As it gets later and later, Maybelyn's eyes are tired and they close so quickly, but her heart knows the possible danger sleep can bring, and she knows she eventually does fall sleep, but she fights it off as long as possible.

As usual, nightmares haunt Maybelyn every time she closes her eyes, and they take her breath like she's underwater till she feels like her body is on the edge of decay.

Maybelyn wishes they were regular nightmares, like haunting figures chasing you, or the boogeyman under your bed, but her nightmares are much worse, with knives and black magic and the meanest demons of hell.

A familiar person appears in Maybelyn's nightmare, a client or an old friend she assumes, until it clicks.

Quentin Jamal Hester iii.

A warrior who fought bravely, and died tragically over a stress disorder, is in her nightmare, and it is not a good sign.

Being a medium, sometimes your dreams and nightmares are prophetic, and since an appearance of Jamal has come, it only gets worse when Maybelyn wakes up, and she knows that.

Maybelyn wishes she had a phone to ring Quentin senior, but phones have been a rarity as much as the blue comet around here.

Fortunately, Maybelyn has a ouija board that she can talk to Quentin Jamal junior, and hopefully call him off.

Maybelyn makes her way down the stairs, covered in night sweats, and worried about Quentin senior like mad.

As Maybelyn gets into her office she realises she broke her planchette, so she is back at square one... until a thought strikes her.

Mitchell has a planchette.

But it would be near impossible, and a death wish to want anything from Mitchell.

Which is a good thing that Maybelyn has a death wish, so she fearlessly goes straight to his room and peeks through the door, hoping to find Mitchell asleep, but instead finding him pinning a girl to the wall.

"Have you been a bad girl?" Mitchell asks, and the girl smirks and nods, and they both lean in to kiss, but Mitchell pulls out a knife and stabs the girl twice in the stomach and once in the neck, and he twists her neck enough that it breaks, and she dies instantaneously.

Maybelyn has to hold in her gasp of surprise when Mitchell suddenly stabbed the girl, and she covers her mouth as she shakes, seeing the sigh of her son being a monster.

Mitchell then lays the girl's body on the bed and continues to talk to her, despite her heartbeat or lack thereof, and as soon as he leans in to kiss the corpse, Maybelyn has seen quite enough, and turns around and walks away.

'A necrophilic, cannibalistic, psycho serial killer for a son... what an accomplishment' Maybelyn thinks to herself as she walks away.

If there was anything Maybelyn could do, she would, but at this point her neglect to address any situations put in front of her is completely understandable, considering she can't do anything to protect other people, or anything to stop her son, so the only thing she can do is walk away and mind her own, so that's what she does.

Maybelyn doesn't want to have to wait till morning, till Mitchell comes out of his room to go into it and grab his planchette, but she's going to have to wait till then because she has no other choice.

When morning comes, Maybelyn finds herself asleep in one of the chairs of her office, and quickly gets up to scan the house for a sign of Mitchell before going into his room and grabbing his planchette.

"Hello there" Mitchell says to Maybelyn as soon as she opens his door.

Maybelyn jumps out of fright and Mitchell glares accordingly.

"What are you looking for?" Mitchell demands.

"Nothing, nothing!" Maybelyn exclaims.

"You're lying. You looking for that whore? I know you were outside the door, I heard you make a noise" Mitchell retorts, and Maybelyn shivers.

But before either of them can comment, the front door opens and a customer goes to the office, and Mitchell gives Maybelyn a confusing look before she heads for his door, and whispers "show time."

Maybelyn's knees go weak and she feels as if she is going to puke when she sees Quentin senior.

"Quinn, what a... Pleasant surprise" Maybelyn tries to say as easily as possible, but it comes out with so much fear.

"Surprise? You called me to have this appointment?" Quentin asks.

"That wasn't me, I don't even have a phone" Maybelyn exclaims while motioning to her desk and tapping her front pockets for proof of being phone-less.

"Then why am I here?" Quentin asks skeptically, and from the other side of the room, every one of the doors lock at once and Maybelyn can see the blood drain from Quentin's face as she turns pale herself.

"Mitchell what are you doing?!" Maybelyn exclaims into the darkness.

"Who is Mitchell?" Quentin asks.

"Dad?" A voice calls from the hall.

Maybelyn feels panic rise, because she knows that Quentin is going to die.

"Do not respond to his voice, fight it, Quentin, because that's not really him" Maybelyn urges.

"He's my son, how could that not be him?" Quentin asks sorrowfully as he goes down the hall.

"He's been dead for too long to be even a fragment of your son anymore, Mr. Hester!" Maybelyn tries to call after Quentin, but he does not listen and continues to walk to the voice of his son, and ultimately his death.

Quentin senior goes into the kitchen where Jamal sits, in full military gear and armed with an AR that Maybelyn assumes is fully loaded and cocked.

"Son?" Quentin asks.

Jamal sits in a slumped position like he has been beaten, and Maybelyn feels a bit sorry for the spirit, until he looks up and shows his face.

Red eyes glare at Quentin and the most horrifying expression plagues Jamal's face.

"What happened to you, son?" Quentin asks shakily.

"Death happened" Jamal's spirit says angrily, and he stands up, makes his way over to his father, and puts his hand around his father's throat.

"Mitchell! Why are you doing this, Quentin has done nothing wrong, none of these people have done anything wrong!" Maybelyn exclaims, trying to tear Quentin from Jamal, but only making things worse for Quentin.

"Jamal is just doing something he should have done a long time ago, even before the war" Mitchell mutters.

"Being killed by the angry spirit of your own son? No one deserves to die like this" Maybelyn shouts through tears, but Quentin still dies.
