The days changed like you wouldn't believe. When he was here, the grass was green, the flowers were pink, & the night was so bright. Life had sunshine & smiles, and all those things us pessimist's despise. Home wasn't like it used to be, because a house was never home, & he was never really planted like the flowers that lead up to their house. He was home, and anywhere they went, as long as they were together, they were home. There is, in fact, no place like it. After he died, everything suddenly lost taste, like he had taken it with him. So, she had to become friendly with the darkness and all sorts of scum, like the sewer rats & the Venus fly traps that she thought sometimes talked to her. She had become comfortably numb. All the animals spoke highly of him, and they only really fear the Seventh Son, his offspring. It wasn't quite prophecy, but his rage & evil were predicted not long ago; regardless, she ignored it for as long as she could, because ignorance is bliss, right?

5. Chapter 4

Maybelyn was forced to continue her Medium business, but she didn't mind much because she loved what she did. A little bandage on the back of her neck wouldn't interrupt her work too much.

Sometimes her job was quite terrifying, like today, when a man came in distressed and explained to Maybelyn the dreams he had been having, and how his family had been acting very weird. Not like themselves.

"I mean, I caught my teenager with a ouija board at her slumber party, and ever since then my family haven't been normal, and that might sound nuts, but maybe that was a bad thing for her to do?" Ed Sanchez says shakily.

"Make them all drink salt water, and if they react negatively, keep some type of silver close to you.
This might sound odd, but coming from a medium, please understand Ed, that I work in the unnatural world, and I know there are things out there. If your family is any more suspicious just bring them here and I will protect you" Maybelyn warns, in a low voice, because Mitchell might be listening, and he can't know that this man might bring demons into the house.

Mitchell keeping a journal and writing notes during her clients appointments terrifies her enough.

Maybelyn has clients who have a house that is being haunted or a cursed object, and she can usually take care of it, while dismissing the curiosity of the people, but sometimes they have to bring the cases to her home instead of dealing with it how she directed, or letting the hex bag do its work.

This family might be one of those cases.

Maybelyn falls asleep for the first time in awhile, and saw dreams of terrifying things, waking up in night sweats everywhere, and a nasty feeling in her stomach, so she changes the sign to 'closed today' and turns off her alarm, just to take a morning to sleep in.

As she dreams, she dreams the fears of her clients, because they don't just go anywhere when she takes their fear away from them, they turn into her fears, basically inheriting them, but that's something she discloses from the clients.

Right now, as Mitchell opens her door and stands on the frame, he listens as Maybelyn thrashes around her bed, crying and screaming for the dream to let her go.

Mitchell has never seen this in his mother, because being a medium, you generally can control your dreams, but something has happened to Maybelyn where she cannot.

Mitchell slams the door as he exits, and it wakes Maybelyn up, covered in sweat and uncontrollable breathing.

Maybelyn takes a minute to compose herself by evening out her breath, but realised she is still covered in night sweats, so she goes to take a quick shower.

Panic rises as Maybelyn opens her pyjama drawer, seeing a hand that comes out and grabs her wrist.

After Maybelyn grabs her pyjamas she gets the feeling someone is behind her and spins around to find a swarm of demons, but as she blinks they all go away.

Maybelyn's breathing is uneven again as she grabs a towel out of the hall closet, because thousands of spiders are crawling down her arms and all over her, until she closes her eyes and they're all gone.

Maybelyn braves it to the bathroom, stepping through pools of blood, over cockroaches, and dozens of worms trying to chew her flesh off.

When Maybelyn gets to the bathroom she blinks and they're all gone, but when she opens the door she let's out a loud gasp, because someone is hanging by the shower curtains with blood pooling out of their wrists and mouth.

Maybelyn slams the door, but remembers all the other visions, and opens it back up and there is no sign of the bloody suicide.

Hoping the visions have stopped, Maybelyn turns on the shower, and shrieks when a hand reaches through the head of the shower, but she quickly blinks and it leaves.

Maybelyn lets the water warm up before bracing herself and going in, and it feels like sewing needles jabbing into her until she blinks and it's just water.

The person that tries to strangle Maybelyn from behind the curtain when she tells herself it's not real and blinks, but one after the other, her clients fears attack her, during the simple business of just trying to take a shower.

After Maybelyn thinks she is clean, and has had enough, she leaves the shower, this time discovering a dead animal, but blinking it away.

Maybelyn wipes the fogged up mirror only to see a zombie staring back at her, but wipes him away too and she sees her tired, worn out and afraid self, and tightens up her leech infested towel before going back out to the hall and back to her room where she can go back to sleep.

The amount of reality that Maybelyn feels in the visions make them all the more frightening, and she wants nothing more than to find a devils trap necklace or a rosary somewhere.

A hyena passes Maybelyn by, grazing her bare leg with his teeth, and she tumbles over human bones to get back into her room, where she finds a small girl tied up and laying in a pool of blood right on her bed.

Blinking the mess of her room away, Maybelyn pulls on her new pyjamas which have mice inside, and goes back over to her bed, only to get her ankles grabbed and tugged until she blinks and finally lays back in bed.

Maybelyn's bed is covered in glass shards that make her bloody crawling all the way to her side, and she blinks once more before shutting her eyes, hoping to be freed and to get back to the real world where all of this isn't in her home.

Maybelyn hears a power saw, and doesn't know wether to open her eyes as it comes to her face, and she opens her eyes to see a psychotic looking doctor aiming for her eyes, but then blinks again and he's gone.

When it gets too overwhelming for Maybelyn, she let's herself drift off, even though rabid cats and dogs are chewing her flesh and her blanket keeps trying to suffocate her.

When daylight breaks through the small small window in Maybelyn's room, the visions start to get transparent until they are gone, and Maybelyn can't believe it, but they're finally gone.

Maybelyn sits up in her bed, absolutely shaken with fright till she is shivering in fear.

As Maybelyn collects herself she gains the courage to go downstairs, fearing the wrath of her captor and son, and fearing the vile images appearing again.

Maybelyn says a prayer in English and a prayer in Latin while repeating the sign of the cross over her chest and forehead, and loses count before she goes downstairs.

The next time Maybelyn contacts her dead husband with a ouija board, he seems quite frustrated with her, but gives her an important tip.

According to Tom, he hid a solar spells book in the floorboards of their bedroom when they first moved in, because he could never truly trust the house, and had an inkling.

Maybelyn resorts to a plastic spatula to pull up the floorboard after a long struggle, because Tom's tools are long gone since Mitchell chose upon the path of dark magic and removed all sharp, heavy, iron, and metal in the house, which resulted in plastic cutlery and virtually no tools to fix anything, and her wand is missing.

Sometimes Maybelyn regrets ever falling for Tom, and ever letting herself be so dumb, because living a life with magic and the unnatural trailing behind you wherever you go clearly never ends well, and for Maybelyn to expect anything differently shows how irresponsible she is, and proof that she should have never became a mother.
