Before opening my eyes, I just listened to what was around me. The beeping of my heart monitor, the distinct puffing and hissing of a ventilator, that's when I felt the tube in my throat. I started coughing and struggling to breathe again, even though I had a tube breathing for me.
"Shh honey, stop struggling. Dad went to go get someone to take that out for you, but you're only making it worse for yourself." My mom whispered as she stroked my hair. Within two minutes a nurse came in to remove my tube.
"How long have I been asleep?" I mumbled. Man my throat hurt.
"Only since last night. It's 12 noon." Shit. I had to go to class, my paper was due in half an hour.
"When can I get out of here? I have to go to class. I have a paper due."
"Honey, don't be silly. You have the flu, and you were severely dehydrated, you have to stay and rest. Just email your professor the paper, and explain your situation."
"I'm fine mom, I need to leave."
"You'll do as your mother says."
"Dad, calm down. I'm fine, honestly. You guys didn't have to come all this way."
"You're in the hospital! Of course we came. Thankfully Pete stayed until we could get here with you." My mom truly loved Pete like her own son. Pete. My friends. Liam.
"Did you make Pete leave?"
"Of course not, we love Pete. He said he was going to try and get some sleep though." My mom explained. They had to be joking, Pete wouldn't leave me. I wouldn't leave him in the hospital. What an ass.
"Can someone get me my laptop please?" I had to talk to my friends and email my professors.
"Honey, I think it'd be best if you just try and rest." My mom was always treating me like a child. I guess that's what happens when you're the baby of the family. I had two older brothers, Andrew and Alexander, and an older sister, Amelia. "Amelia wants to know if you're up for a visit from her." I loved my siblings, and obviously I was fine with any of them coming to visit, but I didn't want them to go out of their way for me.
"Sure mom, but I don't want her going out of her way to see me."
"Nonsense. They're your siblings, and Amelia lives in the city, it's not going to be inconvenient Let her visit you."
"Fine, but I don't want you guys spending all day here. Go out and enjoy the city. I'll be here, I'll be fine."
"Mom. I'm not taking no for an answer. I'll be okay for a few hours without you, I'm in a hospital, I'm in good hands."
"She's right, Penelope." Thank you Dad.
"Fine. We won't be gone more than five hours." My mom said reluctantly.
"Mom, honestly, take your time." I was getting slightly irritated. I just wanted five minutes alone.
When they finally left, I opened my laptop to see five new texts, and 35 new messages in the groupchat. I quickly emailed all of my professors to let them know what was going on. I knew that it would be okay since I would have an excuse from the hospital, but I was still nervous.
Pete: Hope everything is good, sorry I left. Didn't want to deal with your parents alone.
Dan: You okay? Pete told me everything! Love you boo
Liam: How are you feeling today?
You weren't in pysch, I'm worried.
Ashley? Please text me back. Very worried, I'll go to your dorm if I don't hear back from you soon.
Me: Sorry, I've been sleeping. I'm actually at the hospital, apparently I have the flu lol
Liam: Sorry to hear that. I have review notes from psych if you'd like them
Me: That would be fantastic, email them to me?
Liam: They're handwritten, I can drop them off if you'd like
Me: You want to come to the hospital? Haha
Liam: I just want to see you and make sure you're okay!
Me: Okay, I'm in room 305
I then opened GroupMe to see how those freaks were doing. I quickly skimmed through all the messages. It was pretty much Pete telling them I was in the hospital, their freak outs, Sabrina flipping out about her Bio professor, and Regan talking about this "dreamy" guy she saw at Starbucks.
Ash Hole: Just letting you all know that I'm alive.
They were all very relieved to hear that, and some said they would try and visit me as soon as possible. I wasn't sure what medicine I had, but I was getting very tired again.
I awoke to a knock on the door. "Sorry, didn't mean to wake you." Liam said quietly.
"No, it's fine. I don't need to be sleeping."
"You should actually, you need your rest."
"I've had plenty of rest, don't worry about it. So how was class today?"
"Pretty boring without you, if I'm being honest."
"Good, I don't want you enjoying class without me." I said laughing a bit. There was that sore throat again.
"So have you been here alone all night?"
"No, Pete was the one who called the ambulance, so he came with me. Then he called my parents, so they've been with me since last night I guess, but I passed out in the ambulance."
"Shit. I'm glad you're okay."
"So here are my notes." He pulled out notes written in a surprisingly nice font. I assumed that his writing was nice from being a celebrity, but I didn't know.
"I'll just take pictures on my phone, then you can have them back." Shit, I didn't know where my phone was. "Except, I'm not sure where my phone is... can you look for me?"
"Sure, where should I look?"
"You can try my backpack, and if it's not in there, check that bag of clothes." Thankfully, he found it in my backpack, I didn't really want Liam looking through my dirty clothes, and touching my bra. I quickly took pictures of his notes and returned them. "Thanks, I really appreciate this."
"My pleasure, I'm just happy I could help you out."
We talked for about an hour, until there was a knock on the door. "ASHLEY! How's my baby sister?!" Mia.
"Hi Mia. I'm fine." I looked at Liam apologetically. He smiled back at me and squeezed my hand quickly.
"I missed you so much LeeLee!" She had always called me LeeLee, I really hated it. "Why haven't you come to visit me?" Mia was always a bit much. Her and Alex were twins, but Alex was very calm. Andy was a lot like me, probably why he was my favorite.
"I've been really swamped with school."
"So how's Oliver? Miss him?" I hadn't really told anyone in my family about the breakup, and since Liam was here, which Mia seemed to completely ignore, I felt so embarrassed.
"We broke up Mia. A little over a week ago."
"Oh LeeLee! I'm sorry, why didn't you tell me? I have valuable big sister knowledge in how to help you!"
"I didn't tell anyone in the family, but I'm fine, Mia." I could tell that she had just then noticed Liam.
"I can tell. Who might this be?!"
"Liam, this is my older sister, Mia. Mia, this is Liam Payne, of One Direction."
"Pleasure to meet you." Liam said charmingly.
"Mom just said you had the flu! You're not dying are you, why else would someone from One Direction visit you?"
"Gee, thanks Mia."
"I didn't mean it like that."
"I'm a student at Columbia. Ashley and I have psychology together. I didn't know she had a sister."
"And two older brothers." I added.
"You didn't tell him about me? What the hell LeeLee."
"I'm sorry, I didn't think he'd have to meet my family anytime soon."
"Well you moved on rather quickly."
"We're just friends, Mia."
"Yeah whatever, how could you do this to Ollie? Did you cheat on him?"
"God, Mia. He broke up with me. I just met Liam on Monday."
"Ollie was such a sweet kid."
"He's not dead Mia. He's the one that hurt me and you're defending him. How classic."
"I'm just trying to understand LeeLee! I'm not defending him, he was just the sweetest boyfriend to you."
"Okay, well now he's not. I think you should probably leave Mia. I'm going to try and sleep."
"I'm going to send my condolences to Ollie. And I came all the way to see you, I'm not leaving yet."
"God. Please just go to the cafeteria or something. And why would you talk to Oliver?"
"He was like a brother to me."
"No, he wasn't. He was like your little sister's boyfriend, and that relationship is no more. Please just drop it. Go get something to eat."
"Fine, but only because I love you." She said with a wink before exiting the room. She was such a headache. Mia was 23, and sometimes she acted like she was 15. It was so very annoying. Thank God for my two brothers, they've kept me sane over the years.
"I'm so so so sorry you had to deal with that." I said to Liam.
"Don't worry about it, I have two sisters, I know how they can be." He said chuckling.
"I know, but it's just so annoying. And all that stuff about Oliver." I added, putting my hand over my face.
"Don't worry about it, we're just friends, remember?" He said with a wink.
"Right, of course. Friends."
Liam and I continued talking until we were interrupted again, this time by my lovely friend Peter.
"Hey honey, how're you feeling?" Then he saw Liam sitting beside my bed. "Oh, sorry, I didn't know you were here. I can come back later. Dan and I will just get dinner or something."
"Don't worry about it, mate. I'm Liam by the way, I don't think we've met properly." He said extending his hand. Pete took it and immediately started blushing.
"Peter, but you can call me Pete. Dan was going to come meet me here, I'll just tell him not to."
"Hey now, I don't want to disrupt any pre-made plans. Dan is welcome, I'm not sure how much longer I can stay anyway, we have that exam on Friday." I was taking my history exam during my professor's office hours on Monday, since I wasn't sure if I'd be in the hospital still or not. But I was planning on taking the psych exam on Friday.
"Alright, cool." Pete said, I could tell he was trying not to freak out that Liam was there.
The three of us talked for a bit, well Pete talked the most. I felt like Liam knew more about Pete than he did me. After about 45 minutes Liam announced that he had to leave, which was probably best because my parents could be coming back at anytime. I didn't want to have to explain Liam to them as well.
"I love him." Pete announced as soon as Liam left the room.
"I couldn't tell." I sarcastically replied.
"No Pete, I'm not. It's just that I wanted some alone time with Liam."
"Why? After all, 'you're just friends.'"
"You just don't get it, but it's fine. When is Dan getting here?"
"He should be here anytime now. It's a shame he didn't get to meet Liam! I want us all to be best friends."
"Me too." I said slightly less sarcastically, but there was definitely sarcasm in my voice.
"I was going to make Ruby come and visit you, but decided against it because I know you're sick and I love you, but one text and she's here."
"Please, Ruby wouldn't stop studying long enough to leave campus."
"Hmm you might be right. Where does she think you're at right now?"
"Probably with a guy. She thinks I'm a slut."
"You've literally slept with one guy, how does that make you a slut?"
"Good question. Oh well, I only have to make it through this year with her."
"Then you can live with Dan and I!" We had planned to live together when we were still in high school, back when Oliver and I were still a thing.
"What's wrong baby?!"
"I feel like I'll always be the third wheel."
"Not if you have a boyfriend by then!"
"Peter, that's literally the last thing on my mind."
"BUT that means it's on your mind."
"HELLO BEAUTIFUL." Dan shouted as he entered the room.
"Hi Dan, how are you?"
"Better now that I'm with my two favorite people!" He said kissing me on the cheek.
We all talked until my parents came back.
"Honey, Amelia texted me," I was never sure why she referred to us by our full names. As if I wouldn't know who she was talking about if she said Mia. "And she's very upset with how you treated her."
"Well I wasn't too keen on her behavior either, mother."
"She came here to visit you and you sent her away!"
"She was being rude! I shouldn't have to stand for that. I'm an adult."
"I'm sure she was just being a normal sister." My father added in.
"Not really sure why you're taking her side, but whatever. I don't care." Meanwhile Pete and Dan were listening to all of this.
"We're not taking sides. For goodness sakes."
"Doesn't matter. I don't care."
I wished my brothers would have come to visit. They can calm my mother down. I felt my phone vibrate and I was immediately pissed off. God dammit Amelia Jean.
Oliver: Hey, Mia said you were in the hospital. Hope you're okay!
Me: I'm doing perfectly fine. Mia had no right to text you and tell you that.
Oliver: I still care about you Ash, I care about your wellbeing.
Me: You don't get to care. Contrary to Mia's beliefs, you broke up with me.
Oliver: She told me you were already seeing someone.
Me: JESUS CHRIST. I AM NOT DATING LIAM. WE ARE JUST FRIENDS. FRIENDS. WHY IS THAT SO HARD FOR EVERYONE TO GRASP?
Oliver: You always were irritable when you were sick.
That wasn't even worth a reply. I was even more angry at Mia now. She had no right to talk to Oliver.
Me: I'm so done with Mia. She texted Oliver after we broke up.
Alex: You broke up?
Me: Yes, and I don't really want to talk about it. But she had no right.
Alex: I'll talk to her. How are you feeling btw?
Me: Ehh. I have lots of medicine in my right now. Thankfully lol
Alex: Good. Miss you, and I love you.
Me: Miss and love you too
Alex always could calm me down. I just couldn't believe Mia would do that. I thought she had some compassion for her sister. Apparently Oliver was more important.
