My name is Ashley Danielle Carter and I'm 19 years old. This is the story of how my life changed forever.
"Ashley, stop being such a hoe." My best friend Peter shouted at me.
"Give it up Pete, I'm not going to dinner with you and Dan." Peter and Daniel have been dating for two years, they were so in love with each other. Pete was always trying to get me to hang out with them, and I did, all the time. This was different though, I had just been dumped by my boyfriend of one year.
"C'mon Ash, I just want you to be happy."
"I'm fine, Pete, I swear. I mean obviously I miss Oliver, but he broke up with me. I can't do anything about it. He's going to some fucking school nobody's ever heard of, and we're here at Columbia." Okay, so maybe I was a little bitter that he chose some school in Oregon over NYU.
Oliver and I were friends for years before we started dating. Pete, Dan, Oliver and I were basically friend goals. We lived in bum fuck nowhere New York, but we decided that we wanted to go to school in the city. We all applied to Columbia and NYU, and then from there we all applied to other schools individually. Oliver and Dan didn't get into Columbia, but Pete and I worked our asses off to get in. Oliver and Dan both got into NYU though, so we made a pact to stay together. Then in April, Oliver and I went on a super romantic date and that's when he sprung the news on me. He swore that we could make the long distance work, and I was so in love, I believed him.
Soon enough school started, we'd only been in session for two weeks when he asked for a skype date. That wasn't uncommon for us, but I could tell something was wrong. I still remember the conversation perfectly.
"Oliver! I miss you so much. It's not the same without you here, I honestly can't wait for Thanks-"
"I can't do this anymore."
"What do you mean, 'You can't do this anymore.'"
"I love you, but our relationship just isn't the same. I'm constantly worried that you're going to find someone else there, and I think it's best if we start fresh. We should go our separate ways."
"I'm not going to find someone better though, I love you. I want to be with you."
"This is for the best, Ash. I promise."
That's when I stopped fighting and just hung up. We'd only been together for a year, but it still broke my heart.
"Ashley! We're just going to get some Thai food. Come on!"
"I just hate third wheeling all the time. I'll be fine. I'll order some food, or go to the dining hall. I have my roommate there, I'm not going to be alone."
"Oh yeah, Ruby, she's a joy."
"Peter! Stop it. I'm going back to my room. We can catch up later. Tell Dan I love him."
"Tell him yourself." I almost gave in, but instead I just walked away from Pete. "You're such a hoe!" He shouted after me.
When I got back to my room Ruby wasn't there. Ruby was my random roommate, and she was nice enough, but she followed the rules to a T. That wasn't really a problem either, it just got annoying sometimes.
I opened my MacBook to order some chinese food. It was my absolute favorite and after the rough week I'd been having I felt that I deserved it. While I waited for my food to come I decided to start some homework. I had an English paper due in three days, an exam in my history class in 4 days, and an exam in Psych in 5 days. It was tough balancing it all, but I really enjoyed school, it helped me keep my mind off of things.
By the time I finished my food, I had almost finished my first rough draft of my essay. I took a break and checked my phone, six texts from Pete, four from Dan and one from my mom.
Mom: Hey Ash Pete said hes worried abt u call me!
Me: Mom, I'm fine. Pete's being dramatic. I chose school over going out to dinner with him and Dan. Everything is fine. Love you Xx
Mom: OK. Miss u n luv u.
The way my mom texted made me nauseous.
Pete: Not too late to come to dinner!
Come on! Don't be lame!
Ugh. Guess you're not coming. Lame.
Are you really ignoring me now?
I texted your mom.
Dan: I'm so sorry about Pete.
I love you!
Please ignore him.
And don't hate me hahah!
I finished my essay and started studying for history. It was a medieval history class and I was not a fan. It sounded fun at the time. I lost track of time again and didn't realize it was 11:00 pm until Ruby came in.
"You're home late." I said with a small laugh.
"It shouldn't concern you. You come in late all the time." Ruby was not being her normal self, though maybe I shouldn't have said it.
"I'm sorry." And with that I went back to studying. After the Ruby altercation I started studying for Psych before falling asleep at my desk. When my alarm went off at 6:30 I was not having it. I laid at my desk for a minute before finding the energy to get up and shower. At 7:30 I was out the door on my way to Psychology. I liked to get there early so I could get my usual seat, and wasn't forced to sit next to anyone. I wasn't fond of being crowded in the lecture halls. I sat down and scrolled through Facebook until I heard someone ask if they could sit next to me. I kept looking at my computer and nodded, very unhappy that someone was sitting to me this early.
"I'm new here, unfortunately I'm getting a late start and I hear there's an exam this week." The man with a british accent said.
"Yepp. On Friday." I said, still not looking at him.
"You're awfully friendly aren't you?" He said with a slight chuckle. How rude. First, he sits next to me in an almost empty lecture hall, and then he tries to make friendly conversation first thing in the morning.
"Well actually, I like t-" I finally turned to look at the man next to me, shocked by who I saw. "I'm so sorry... I didn't mean to be rude."
"Liam." He said putting out his hand.
"I'm curious, what do you like?"
"Well I was going to say that I liked to sit by myself, but I suppose I can make an exception."
"That's good to hear." Jesus Christ, he had such a nice smile. "Do you think you can catch me up on what you've learned in the past three weeks?"
"Well I can try."
"Should we get coffee together?"
"I like coffee, but I just got out of a relationship, so strictly platonic please?" Did I really say that? Why would Liam Payne like me? I was completely ordinary. 5'7, medium length brown hair, brown eyes. I guess my face wasn't bad, but there were definitely better looking women on campus. Ugh.
"Of course. I wouldn't want to make you uncomfortable."
"Alright, I'm done with my classed at 3:00."
"I'll see you at 3:00. Here's my number, text me where we should meet."
"Alright." I said, slightly blushing.
