Paul Malik the handsome Arab, inherited the laundry business from his father who came to live in England in 1948 and started life in Liverpool, He buys his first shop with six old washing machines when he moves to the Arab and Jewish community in Benwell in Newcastle. He notices how the community struggle to wash clothes by hand and sets about opening a laundrette. Des Baldwin, the racial bigot does not like Paul or any other black man or woman for that matter. He works in a garage on waterville road and does fiddle work on the side. There is a knock on his door one evening and a bony faced man in a suit asks if he will repair a friends car. the 1968 Jaguar belongs to Darren Ingles a notorious gangster from the West End of Newcastle. “Just be careful Jennifer is all I’m saying; I wouldn’t want to see you get hurt that’s all.’

“I’m a big girl you know Paul and I can look after myself.’

“Well even so be careful.’ Please get your coat and I will drive you home.’

“But it’s only ten thirty Paul.’

“I know that and there won’t be anyone coming in now and even if they did my shop closes at eleven. The last washes go in at nine thirty and dried by ten thirty and then they should be out the shop giving you enough time to mop the floor and lock up.’

“I usually leave about eleven thirty after cleaning up.’

“No more, do you hear me Jennifer.’

“Yes Paul.’

“Good now let me drive you to your home; where is it that you live.

“It’s not far really I could walk.’

“I will not hear of it; now do as you are told young lady and get into my car.’

Paul drove her to Malton Crescent (Blackthorn Crescent) right to her door then got out and opened the door for her.’

“Thank you Paul; I will see you tomorrow if you are about.’

 “I have a few jobs to do but I will see you at some point tomorrow yes.’

Jenny went into the house and closed the door; she took off her coat then took out her money that she’d earned from the doctors that was in her apron she went into the living room where her father and mother were watching an episode of Callan starring Edward Woodward.’

Who was that I saw bringing you home Jen asked her mother.’

“It was my boss Paul.’

“What the rag head said Des as he lay fully stretched out on the settee.’

“Don’t call them that dad it’s not nice; and shift your feet and let me sit down.’

Des sat up so that Jenny could sit down.’

“So what was the A- rab doing giving you a lift?’

“He said a young lady shouldn’t be out walking home on her own.’

“Lady by Jesus is he blind.’

Jenny slapped her father’s leg.’

“He’s really nice dad.’

“Well diven’t be gannin’ oot with an A-rab will you or we will be the talk of Shields.’

“Actually I’ve got a date with a doctor on Saturday night.’

“He’s not a flaming Pakistani is he? God this gets worse.’

Dad you are such a racist; and no he’s not he’s white and he’s English if you’d like to know but if I wanted to date a Pakistani doctor that would be my business.’

“Hey I na you would; he’d never set foot in this hoose I tell you that much.’ This is my hoose and I pay the bloody rent so they’ll be nae Pakistanis, or A-rabs coming here.’

“Now if you were dying dad you mean you would not let a Pakistani or Indian doctor treat you?’

“I well that’s different isn’t it.’

“No it’s not; you are so bigoted dad.’ I’m not sitting here listening to racial abuse mother I’m going to bed.’
