I stood at the school gates, looking at my watch.
"Max!" My friend, Tristan, said and ran up to me.
"You're... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 30 minutes late." I smirked.
"There were idiots dashing towards the doors and I didn't feel like dying today."
"How was detention anyways? Did Mrs. Driddle fall asleep?"
"No, sadly." Tristan sighed.
"I just realized, how were you 30 minutes late just because people were running through the halls? Our school is smaller than a potato."
"What? You think I'm staying at school late without exploring the girls' bathroom? That place is like fucking Narnia."
"Remind me never to go along with your ideas." I smirked.
We walked into my house and I saw Mom cooking dinner.
"Hey, mom, is it okay if Tristan stays for dinner?"
"Sure thing." She smiled.
"Thank you." We smiled and went to my room.
I opened the door to see Leah looking through my underwear drawer.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Looking for food."
"The only food in there are nuts." Tristan said.
I slowly turned and looked at Tristan, who at this point, was laughing his ass off.
"I am going to kill you one day." I said and squinted.
"Nevermind. I'll get ice cream." Leah said and ran into the kitchen.
"THAT'S MY- oh forget it." I sighed and plopped on my bed.
"So, are you excited for another of those running around?" Tristan asked.
"Not really, but eh. It's life."
I stared at the wall in silence for a minute.
"Max?" He asked.
"Are you okay? You seem upset."
"Fuck yeah I'm upset. That turd bucket is eating the rest of my ice cream."
"Oh, you don't know the hal-"
Suddenly, Leah ran on the doorway and shouted, "BOO!"
I jumped and fell on the floor.
I stared at the ceiling, my arms sprawled out.
"I quit life."
The next day at school, an invitation was taped on my locker.
I took it off and started reading.
"What is it?" Tristan asked.
"An invitation to Grace Penbar's birthday party." I replied in confusion.
"Why did she invite you?"
"I don't know. We've never really talked. Maybe she got the wrong locker number. Where is she?" I asked, looking around.
I saw her standing at her locker with a group of her friends.
"I'll be right back." I said.
I walked over to her and every single one of her friends stopped talking.
"Hi, I'm sorry for interrupting but I think you accidentally gave me an invitation."
"It was for you, Max."
"Really? Why?" I asked.
She and her friends stood there, just giggling.
"Well, I'll be there." I said and walked back to Tristan.
"I don't know why but it was meant for me."
A week later, I was at Grace's door for her birthday.
She opened the door and I walked in.
There were only a few other guys there, although I didn't know them. I sat alone and silently ate cake.
Grace sat next to me.
"You have some icing there." She said and used her finger to wipe off the icing on the side of my mouth. She licked the icing off of her finger and smiled, then proceeded to walk away.
"Wait, what?" I asked, my mouth full of cake.
She looked back at me and motioned for me to follow her.
I followed her through the crowd and down the hall. She opened a closet and stepped in.
"Come in here."
"I'm not sure is that's a good-"
Before I could finish, she grabbed my hand and pulled me in, shutting the door behind me.
"Uh... Hi?" I asked. It was dark and I could barely see anything.
"Don't use that mouth for words." She said.
I could feel her leaning in close.
"I have to go." I said and dashed out of the closet.
I walked home, looking at all of the houses as I passed.
I heard a soft crying. I stopped in my tracks and looked around.
"Is anybody there?" I called.
I walked towards the sound.
As I got closer, I saw a little girl crying underneath a tree.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
She looked at me and shook her head.
I sat next to her.
"I lost my sissy." He was able to get out.
"Let's go find her."
"Can I see a smile?"
She shook her head.
"Like this." I said and used the sides of my mouth to make me smile.
"Can do you that?" I asked.
She gave a little laugh.
We found her sister soon after. She had dark red hair and blue eyes. She walked over to me with the sweetest smile.
"Thank you for finding my sister." She smiled.
"No problem." I smiled nervously.
