Everyone knew it. Everyone knew that I didn't like change. But then again, no one ever really gave much thought as to what I wanted.
My friend Daniela and I were on our way to our new apartment in London. Considering we had practically grown up together, Daniela was the closest thing I had to family. When she was seven, her house caught on fire, killing both of her parents. Daniela then moved in with my parents and me. Not even a year later, my father was in a fatal car crash, sending him straight through the windshield. Ever since then, it's been my mom, Daniela, and me.
Well, it was that way up until about a month ago.
Little did we know that my mom was suffering from stage four brain cancer. But we caught it too late to save her.
Now it was just Daniela and me, moving from Manchester to London to attend university.
"Hey Belle, you coming?", Daniela asked as she opened the taxi door.
"Yeah, I'm coming", I said as I slid across the seats and stepped out of the taxi.
Daniela and I walked up the seemingly endless flights of stairs to our apartment, which was on the third floor. As walked up the last, steepest and narrowest flight of stairs, I carefully opened our apartment door, trying not to hit the front door of our across-the-hall neighbors.
I walked into our furnished apartment expecting to feel at home, but the feeling wasn't there.
"Wow it looks nice, doesn't it?", Daniela asked, trying to sound as positive as possible.
I just sighed and frowned at the floor.
"Hey", Daniela said as she put her hand in my shoulder, "I know things have been...difficult lately. But trust me. Life will get better when you have University to take your mind off of things. Who knows? Maybe you'll meet someone".
I let out a scoff and said, "Please. I have no intention of dating anyone right now".
"I'm just saying. Anything can happen", Daniela said, winking at me.
I began getting a weird, ominous feeling about the apartment. It felt like there was a presence in the room that wasn't either me or Daniela. It felt like...we weren't alone.
"Belle? Belle, you're bleeding", Daniela said as she looked at me with wide eyes.
I raised my hand to my nose and felt something cold running down my face. I drew my hand back and my hand was indeed red with blood.
"I'm...um...I'm going to have a shower", I said as I struggled to find the bathroom.
As soon as I locked the bathroom door behind me, I turned on the water and let in run until it got hot.
I stepped into the steaming shower and let the hot water run down my back. I brought a washcloth to my face to clean up the blood, but the blood was gone.
When I got out of the shower, I retreated to the comforts of my room to get changed. As I pulled my shirt over my head, I noticed a crumpled up nite sitting on my window sill.
You're here for a reason.
You can help. Please help.
Before I had time to think about what that meant, there was a knock at the door and Daniela called to me from the bathroom.
"Belle, can you please get that? It's probably the pizza man", she said.
I then, slowly and lazily, walked out of my room and towards the front door. I opened the front door and found the pizza man standing in front of me.
"That'll be $22.50", he smiled.
I dug through the pockets of my oversized sweatshirt until I found the money. I was about to hand it to the man when something behind him caught my eye.
"Miss? Miss, are you alright?", he asked.
Instead of speaking, I just raised a shaky hand and pointed behind him.
The pizza man turned around to see the man while lived across the hall from us, staring at us through the glass in his door.
"Oh him? That's Dan Howell. He's an odd one. I wouldn't get involved with him if I were you", he said.
"Why not?", I questioned.
"I've heard stories. They aren't pretty", he said, shaking his head.
"Does he live alone?", I asked.
"He has a flat mate named Phil, but I've never seen him", he said.
"Mm", I mumbled in response.
"Miss, I've actually got to get going", he said.
"Oh right. Here's the money", I said as he handed me the pizza.
"You have a nice night", he smiled.
I watched him walk down the stairs and disappear out of sight. Then I looked back at Dan's front door, but he was gone.
"Belle, what took so long?", Daniela asked as she walked up to me.
"Dani, what do you say we pay a visit to our neighbors tomorrow?", I asked.
"You mean to Dan and Phil? The ones that live across the hall?", she asked as she pointed to their front door.
"Yes I mean Dan and Phil", I nodded.
"Mm, I don't know. I've heard that we shouldn't get involved with them", Daniela said.
"Wait, how do you know that?", I asked.
"Remember that day when I went apartment hunting without you? This apartment was one I looked at that day. I've heard from people in the building what they're like", Daniela responded.
"Oh, mkay", I said.
"Now, please forget about it. We need to rest up before our first day at University tomorrow", Daniela said.
"Right yeah", I said as I shut our front door.
When I went to bed that night, I kept thinking about what people had said about Dan and Phil. They told me not to get involved with them. They told me to stay away. But I've never been one to play by the rules.
I hope you liked the first chapter! :D I had a lot of fun writing this. I will be updating as often as possible so stay tuned! :)
