The next day was filled with making lists and packing my mom’s suitcase.
“Can you go grab my shower things please” She asked. “The travel ones, they are under the sink, and might be in a box.”
I went into her bathroom, which I don’t go in that often, and opened up the top drawer, then the bottom trying to find the soap. “They aren’t in here.”
“Did you check in the cupboard?”
“No.” I went back to looking. I couldn't see what I was grabbing due to all the cleaning supplies in the way, so I was grabbing blindly. My hand came in contact with a box, so I pulled it out. Condoms, not what I was expecting. I quickly put them back and continued my search, I finally found them and brought it out to my mom. “Here they are.”
“Thank you.” She said placing them into the suitcase. After grabbing a couple things from her closet, she was done.
“When is your fight?” I asked.
“It leaves at nine, so I should leave here at seven.” She grabbed her suitcase and hauled it downstairs. We spent the last couple hours spending time with each other watching tv. Becoming more accustomed to the goodbyes, it went alot smoother and faster. After she left I took a shower, letting the warm water release the knots from my shoulders. Once I was clean, I dried myself off with a fluffy towel, then wrapped it around me and walked to my room. I put on a t shirt with holes and a pair of basketball shorts. I checked my clock, apparently I was in there for an hour, not something I would usually do. I slept soundly that night.
My alarm went off early the next morning, I had swim lessons. I got myself ready and headed out the door. At the pool kids were laughing and splashing, and parents were talking.
Rylee found me before class started, “I’m with you again today.”
“Yeah, Kylie said she needed more level 1 instructors.” She smiled.
I started to walk away, but she tapped my shoulder. “Yes?”
“Okay, so you are good friends with Matt. Did he tell you what happened between us?” She asked.
“Yes he did.” I said turning all the way around so I was facing her. ‘Why?”
“Well, I was wondering if he said anything else about us.” She said tilting her head.
“No, he didn’t.” I answered.
“Okay, well I was just wondering if he did because I did ask him if he wanted to see a movie, but he didn’t answer. Thanks.” She walked away.
I walked over to Katrina, “So apparently Rylee asked Matt to the movies but he never answered her. She is so popular though, how could he turn her down?. ”
She looked at me funny, “Have you ever thought he liked you. He kissed you in your living room, and lord knows what went on in that bathroom.”
I hadn’t thought of that. I wandered off into thought, when the whistle blew, which took me back to reality. I walked to class and didn’t say much to Rylee. I didn’t want to talk to her. My shift got done at noon, so I went home and ate some lunch. I heard a knock at my door.
Then it opened. Matt came in and shut the door quickly. “Can I hide out here?”
“Yeah, why?” I asked.
“My parents are on their anniversary, so my aunt is at the house and I can’t stand it there.”
He walked into the living room and sat on the couch.
“So why don’t you just hide out in your room?” I asked smiling.
“That’s the thing, she is everywhere!” He leaned back on the couch. He looked around, noticing the quietness, “Where’s your mom, isn’t she supposed to be back?”
“She was, but she left again. She has an interview in Miami on a talk show.” I explained “She will be back on Thursday.”
“That’s great. But are you sure she will be back on Thursday? My aunt was watching the news and I heard something about about the flights getting delayed. I think a bad storm is hitting down there.”
“Great, so birthday by myself.” I mumbled. I sat on the couch next to him.
“I will take you out. You won’t be alone and I will be away from my aunt.” He exclaimed. “We will go bowling and go out to lunch.”
I looked at him, “You would do that?”
“Of course, I would do anything for you.” He exhaled loudly “Want to watch a movie?”
“Yeah, how about Warm Bodies.”
“Hell Yeah. I love myself a good zombie.”
I got up and grabbed the movie. I put it in the DVD player and pressed play. During the movie I could tell he was looking at me. But I didn’t say anything. When the movie ended, Matt got a call from his aunt telling him to come home for supper.
“I better go.”
“Okay. What time do you want to go tomorrow?” I asked.
“I will be here at 11:30 to pick you up.” He said.
“Pick me up? You live 20 feet away from me.” I questioned.
He smiled, “A gentleman always picks up the lady.” He winked at me and walked out the door.
What had I gotten myself into. Is this a date? I had so many questions running through my head that couldn’t be answered. I took a shower and picked out my outfit for tomorrow. I made myself some supper and laid in bed thinking of what tomorrow would bring.
I got up at nine the next morning to get myself ready. I curled my hair in loose waves which took an hour. Then I got dressed into a jean colored shirt and khaki shorts. My nerves were shot, although I don’t know why. Matt arrived at noon just like he said he would.
He smiled, “You know I have an outfit just like that.”
Just then I realized he was wearing the same thing as me, except in guy clothes. “Great minds think alike.”
He held out his arm to me, “Shall we,”
I grabbed his arm, “We shall” I got in his car and we headed off to lunch. We pulled up to Denny’s which is one of my favorite restraunts.
The waitress sat us at a booth and gave us the menus, “What can I get you to drink?”
Matt thought for a moment, “Ice tea please.” The waitress smiled at him. Then looked at me.
“Same for me.”
She went off to get us our drinks. Looking at the menu I decided on a BLT with fries.
“What are you getting?” Matt asked me.
“I’m thinking a BLT. What about you?” I asked.
“We might as well keep the streak going. I’ll have that too.” He smiled.
The waitress came back with the drinks and smiled at Matt, “Do you know what you would like yet?”
Matt spoke up, “Yes, BLT with fries for the both of us please.” He gave her the menus and she walked off.
At every booth at Denny’s there is a deck of cards, so while we waited for our food we played speed. So far Matt was winning by two games. Then our food came.
“Two BLTs and fries.” The waitress set down the baskets and walked away, clearly done trying to flirt with Matt.
We were both starving, so nothing was said when we were eating. After the bill was paid, we went off to Ryan’s bowling alley. Today was glow in the dark day so all the black lights were turned on. We got our shoes and went to our bowling alley.
“Prepare to be crushed.” I said.
“I will be crushed when you are crying from losing!” He laughed.
“We’ll see.” I said under my breath.
The final score was 145 to 173. Matt won.
He laughed, “In your face.”
“Haha.” I said sarcastically.
We returned the rental shoes and got in his car.
“Today was so much fun!” I said.
“The night's not over.” He smiled.
