I groan as I pull myself up to the fourth floor landing. “No elevator, that is not cool when I have so much stuff.” In my hands are two bags with my Christmas presents to my friends, and I have a backpack on with my overnight items. “Okay, first door on the right.”
I will myself to keep going, realizing that right across the hall is Monic and Rachel’s apartment.
A sigh escapes my lips as I knock on the apartment door belonging to my brother and his friend.
The door swings open, and Joey is standing on the other side.
“Oh, hi Ash,” he smirks, glancing over my body. “I forgot you were coming over.”
“Yeah, well, here I am,” I give a tight-lipped smile.
“Oh, want me to take those bags?”
“Yes,” I groan and shove my bags into his chest.
Joey chuckles, “Shocked there was no elevator?”
“Annoyed is the word.”
“Well, come on in and you can chill while we wait for food,” he steps to the side so I can enter.
“Thanks Joey,” I mumble as I walk into the apartment.
Right as you walk in there is a small kitchen and a foosball table. Farther in are two recliners in front of a TV; off to the right is a yellow couch in front of a window. There’s a bathroom just off the kitchen. Then on either side of the TV is a door that must lead to the two bedrooms.
“You can sit anywhere,” Joey places my bags on the bar counter. “Chandler is out getting pizza, so just get comfy.”
I sling my backpack next to a recliner and then hop into it. “Pizza sounds so good. Did you get, um, breadsticks?”
“Chandler did. Just for you,” he plops down in the other recliner. “So, how are you liking the city?”
“It’s wonderful. Phoebe is a great roommate, and she’s been showing me around and such. Now, I want to get closer to you.”
I lean back and push the footrest up. “We are outsiders. The others have known each other for way longer. I think you Phoebe, and myself could be really close.”
“I’d like that.”
“This room is so bleak without a Christmas tree,” I pout, looking over at Joey who is already grinning at me. “But the snow falling outside makes up for it.”
“You are really cute.”
Joey’s words take me by surprise, and my face heats up in seconds.
“Oh, ah,” I force myself not to look away. “That’s sweet, but I can’t be that cute.”
“Curly hair, sweater too big, boots that you still have on. It’s very possible you are super cute.”
I awkwardly slip my boots off. “Well, no boots. Do you not like my jeans.”
“No, I do.”
“Okay. So, why are you complimenting me all of the sudden?”
“I just can’t deny whatever I am feeling,” he shrugs.
“You don’t feel anything.”
“Chandler will kill you if he found out.”
“So, he doesn’t.”
“I barely know you, Joey.”
“That’s why we keep getting to know each other, but, closer.”
I giggle, “Sorry, but no, Joe. I know that’s probably your first rejection, but I need to get to know you better.”
“I do think you’re cute, too.”
“It’s hard not to,” he smirks.
“Now, when Chandler get back, this conversation never happened. He doesn’t need to know.”
