I am

"She was made out of pure spirit and life. A star on earth. Yet a hurricane in space. Cassiopeia Turow was different." I am a girl who dared to dream. I am someone who sought adventure. I am a person who will learn and thrive and satisfy curiosity. These are all qualities most people share. But most people can't say that they overthrew a monarchy or helped burn down the world. 1. "An inferno is coming"

PROLOGUE

"An inferno is coming."

Now

“You know Case 237 we’ve been sat here for nearly twenty minutes. In utter silence. We both know that I can’t force you to talk but aren’t you bored already? Don’t you want the best trial you can have?”

“I can do this all day.”

“Alright. Just know that the more time we wait the more damaging it is to your hearing Case 237.”

“Cassiopeia.”

“Pardon?”

“My name is Cassiopeia.”

“That’s good! We’re finally getting somewhere. My name is – “

“I know who you are. You are William O’Riley, the Chief of Law and Protection of the People. You want me to sell my soul to that Old World Device so that it can be used in court.”

“I wouldn’t go that far… but yes. Would you mind stating your full name and age?”

“Cassiopeia Turow. 19”

“Monotonous statements that’s how you’re going to play this? Okay. Now, how, when and why did you come to Irille.”

“I wanted adventure. I came by ship. I found it here. Been here for nine months.”

“I’m going to need a bit more from you than that.”

“Another fifteen minutes of pure silence. Do I have to remind you again of –“

“You want my life story? Fine.”

“I don’t but…”

“I grew up in an island called Sars located in quadrant six of the Eastern seas. It was segregated by gender, a lot less than here but still there nonetheless, and I wanted to find adventure. My parents are Olivia Turow (nee Hartnell) and Elijah Turow, my mother typically grows and sells plants and my father is a trader of the Chain Islands and to Marta. I came here by a ship I picked out, the crew of which has nothing to do with the events occurring here, and I found my adventure in the joy of learning and bar keeping in order to generate money.”

“You found your adventure by doing a lot more than that.”

“Are you insinuating something?”

“I’m merely referring to your crimes which I will get to in a minute. Now what would you say drove you to commit the actions you have?”

“I came here to benefit myself. I came here to progress my self-worth and mental state.”

“What was that mental state before coming here, insanity?”

“Depression.”

“So you’re saying that by committing treason and multiple counts of maiming and murdering people your depression was cured and your self-worth improved?”

“Depression can’t be cured.”

“Answer the question.”

“No, I did not do those things for those reasons.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because it was right to do so.”

“Was it right because you were ordered to, hired to?”

“No,”

“Did you do it because you wanted to?”

“No. I did it to purge Irille of the wrongdoings made by corrupted people and to fix this country.”

“Did you act on your own accord or part of a larger organization?”

“On my own –“

“Lie. You did it because you are part of the Sect. You did so because it was a part of your initiation and we know this because it is proven. Now please refrain from further lies or your trial will be even more damaged than what it already is. If you give up the names of those involved in this organisation your sentencing may be reduced.”

“I was acting on my own accord. I tried to fix this country because it isn’t right that women are treated the way they are.”

“Are you saying that what you did was right and therefore an act of heroism?”

“I am saying that I am not as bad as the Old World terrorist groups that you accuse me of being.”

“No one accused you of being anything.”

“Every morning you wake up and kiss your wife on both cheeks before leaving. If your daughters aren’t awake by the time you leave, you leave them a note wishing them a good day and that you love them. They are five and seven aren’t they?”

“Now you’ve went quiet Chief. Tell me do you want them to live in a world where if they wanted to travel, their chances of picking a safe vessel where they aren’t raped or sexually harassed is like a needle in a haystack? With the chances being the needle. Do you want them to have a high probability of being married off to someone much older than themselves? Where instead of their wedding day being the happiest day of their lives, they’ll have a bruise covered by makeup on their faces, and tears of sadness in their eyes, and a nightmare inside their heads instead of a dream. Do you want them to be all but forced to have children quickly because it is written in the Constitution that a bigger population is under less threat from attack?”

“How do you know about me and my family?”

“That doesn’t matter. What does matter is that I tried to do what is right and improve the standards of women and I am being trialled for it. What is right is trying to fix that even though it is written in the Constitution that anyone is allowed to travel to any country in the world, I am treated with discrimination because I am of colour, whereas the normal here is fair skin.”

“I wasn’t being racist.”

“That is not the point Chief. Some call me a hero because I dared to speak up in a world where free voice of opinion is all but denied, even though it says it is a human right in the Constitution. I should not be trialled for these so called crimes because they aren’t crimes!”

“My job is to protect the people and uphold the law, what you did was break that law. The punishment for treason is death by the appropriate element chosen by the judge. Anything you say will be held accountable for your actions and may benefit or hinder the overall conviction.”

“How can you say that you uphold the law, when the people who should be punished for destroying this country are allowed to go free and cause more suffering?”

“I cannot help you when you do not wish to help yourself.”

“You do not wish to help me because if I go free, you’ll be forced to quit your job and the money given to you because of your position will be instantly demanded back. You don’t want to help me because it is in your best interests not to.”

“Chief I may die for what I have tried to do, but I will die knowing that I tried to do something that will become a legacy. Even though you may get rid of me there’s plenty who realise this corruption and will follow in my example. So you may extinguish my flame but believe me an inferno is coming.”
