With the last interview wrapped up, the boys felt an immense relief as the began to board their jet. Niall, less than five minutes after having gotten settled into his seat, was snoring so loudly that Louis couldn't hear himself think. But, he couldn't get himself to rouse Niall awake. The boys had had a pretty rough time with the promos this time around, mostly because they had to keep dodging not only questions of the hiatus, but of Zayn's departure and Louis' trek into fatherhood.
Probably the worst point of their promo season? Having gotten into a spat at the BBC Radio 1 lounge. It was incredibly petty, and Louis couldn't even remember why he had said anything at all, but the fact of the matter was that he had insulted Liam and didn't want to admit he was in the wrong. Okay so he didn't remember because he was a tad hungover, and yeah, Liam was the mature adult and simply walked away pretending it was fine, but Louis knew it wasn't. He sighed as he fell into his seat, completely defeated.
Louis was totally over it, and he couldn't express into words how incredibly relieved he was at the fact that they were practically done. No more traveling out of the country for weeks on end, no more flustered interviews at all hours of the day, and no more fucking having to try to sort his thoughts out among Niall's horrid snores. All they had left were a couple of shoots in LA, a music video to film, and of course their final few performances. It was all slowly beginning to come a close.
"Hey, come on mate." Liam said, gently nudging Niall before he got back into his seat, "Please don't do this the whole flight."
Louis locked eyes with him and shrugged, "Headphones?"
"I guess." Liam said curtly.
Louis watched as Liam took his headphones out of his knapsack and begrudgingly went back to his seat. On top of the fact that he and Liam had kind of had a falling out, Sophia had broken up with him. Something about Liam not being mature enough to handle a real relationship. Or so he had overheard as Liam fought with her on the telephone a few night ago. Louis had figured that perhaps that breakup was on him, seeing as now Sophia wanted to get more serious now that the hiatus was upon them. She had said that if Louis was going to be father, how could Liam not want to move in with her? So yeah, not entirely Louis' fault, but he was pretty sure Liam was blaming him for appearing to be a responsible adult, when really nothing could be further from the truth. Louis had really wanted to reiterate that to Sophia, really wanted to jump into that conversation and tell her that tabloids lies and appearances weren't all they were cracked up to be, but it was too late. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
"Hey." Harry said, taking a seat next to Louis.
Louis smiled wearily at him and nodded. They hadn't spoken much in the past few weeks, really none of them had. They were all wrapped up in their own personal problems, just trying to figure shit out. And they didn't blame each other, at least Louis hoped they didn't. But that was life, sometimes things just have to happen that way.
"What's up, mate?" Louis said, putting down his phone and looking up at Harry. His hair had unsurprisingly gotten longer in the past two weeks, more unruly, a tad more charming. Only Harry could manage to pull it off, of course.
"Nothing, not really."
"I'm bloody tired as fuck." Louis stretched out upon the seat, yawning for an added effect.
"You want to go to sleep?"
"Trying to fight off the jet lag?"
"You know it." Louis replied, attempting to get comfortable.
"I might join you this time."
"I'm serious. I want to be able to not miss out on a whole day of being with Reagan when I get back, so I thought it would be best to just not go to sleep right now, you know?"
"What do you do to stay awake?" Harry asked curiously.
Louis shrugged, "I watch a movie."
"That's your trick?"
"And drink like three red bulls."
Harry grimaced, "That can't be good for your heart."
"We could do a five hour energy shot like Liam does."
Liam poked his head up at the mention of his name, but Louis waved him off so he turned back in his seat and leaned his head against the window.
"Couldn't we just naturally try to stay awake?"
"Harry, you're going to pass out in like two hours if you don't take something."
Harry nodded, getting up from his seat and walking to the mini-fridge they had in the corner near the restrooms. He grabbed four cans of red bull and brought them back with him as he sat back down next to Louis.
"Attaboy." Louis said, grabbing a drink and tipping it towards Harry in cheers.
As the plane began to take off, both Liam and Niall were already passed out. Harry was almost there, but soon enough, Louis was sure, he would feel the effects of the energy drink he had chugged down.
Louis began to set up his laptop to watch something, when Harry asked, "How are you?"
"You ask me this everyday." Louis sighed.
"Yeah, but you never give me a real answer."
"How do you figure."
"Your nose does that weird thing where it crinkles slightly and your nostrils flare."
"Are you trying to imply that I lie to you."
"I have a tell?"
"You have a tell."
"I should be worried about how observant you are." Louis pondered.
Harry shrugged, "You all have tells, I probably might too"
"He tugs slightly on his left ear."
Harry nods with a smirk upon his face, "Yep."
"He does this thing where he bites his lower lip." Harry said, demonstrating, "But it's very subtle. It's not as obvious as yours or Niall's."
"I never noticed any of these things." Louis said, actually a little worried. He wondered if any of the boys were the observant of each other, other than of course Harry.
"Yeah, I don't know, I just tend to try to slow down and notice the small things."
Harry chuckled, "We've established this before."
Louis simply smiled and turned back to his laptop, putting on a movie. He offered Harry one of his earbuds, which Harry took, of course.
Yet halfway into the movie, Louis just couldn't watch anymore. It had been on his 'To Watch' list for ages, but there were just too many things running through his mind at the moment. He took out his earbud and sighed, rubbing his eyes and stretching his legs.
"What's up?" Harry whispered?
The cabin lights were off at this point. Everything was silent. Louis could hear Liam breathing and Niall still snoring. He could hear Harry's heart beat strangely enough, and he started to wonder if it was a side effect from drinking that many Red Bulls.
"You okay mate? You going to have a heart attack?"
He rolled his eyes, "You would be able to tell if I was going to have a heart attack, Harry."
"Yeah, I guess."
"I just..." Louis started, "I don't know I just feel out of it."
He avoided Harry's gaze, "I don't know something about this just doesn't feel right."
"It doesn't feel like before right?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like last year, or even the years before that. We were more of a team."
"I get it."
"What can we do about it?"
Harry shrugged, "I don't know."
"When we stole that car from the body guard and kidnapped Reagan, that felt more like the old us, didn't it?"
Harry nodded, "Yeah. But maybe we're just not those type of people anymore." He shrugged it off as if the statement were nothing. As if it didn't bother him or worry him, as if it didn't matter at all.
Louis knew that Harry was holding something back, maybe he just didn't want to face it yet. Or maybe he was trying to convince himself that this was just a weird phase they all had to go through. But Louis understood that was too good to be true. He knew that the way things were going, the amount of changes were just going to be too great. They were all going to be off living their own lives, for the first time in five years they were going to be on their own. It didn't matter how many times he repeated it, how many times he thought about it or talked about it, he just couldn't seem to accept it. Maybe that's what terrified him the most.
"Remember that time we were performing at the O2? The first night of the tour?"
Louis laughed, "Oh god, I'd never seen Paul so fucking mad."
"Well you and Zayn wouldn't get ready. It was literally five fucking minutes before we were supposed to go on, and you two had stolen a golf cart."
"And they couldn't catch us." He said smugly.
"And to top it off, they were filming for the documentary, remember?"
"That's why we did it. Couldn't murder us on camera, could he?"
Harry chuckled, "Somehow you and Zayn always ended up doing your worst a few minutes before a big show."
"And you fucked everything up after one."
"Well, I couldn't go to sleep."
"So you'd sneak out and party?" Louis said, a knowing look on his face.
"The important thing is that I would always come back, isn't it?"
"You mean you would be dragged back."
Harry shook his head, "Poor Paul. He should get a raise."
"Well, at least this time around we were proper adults."
"True, it's Lydia' life that we've been making impossible." Harry said, leaning back into his seat.
"Which we wouldn't have to be making impossible if she just talked to us in the first place."
"She's gotten better."
"After all the shit we pulled this year? Yeah, you would hope so."
"And what about Reagan? Fuck, we truly know how to treat the people who work for us." Harry sighed.
"Well, I'm sure you've made it up to her...many times."
Harry bumped Louis' arm with his shoulder roughly, "Ow." Louis exclaimed.
"Don't be an arse then."
Louis smirked, "You know, I've never seen you get so worked up about a girl."
"She's not just any girl."
"Yeah, I guess you're right."
"Briana isn't that kind of girl for you?"
Louis shook his head, "Nah, mate. We knew what it was when we hooked up those couple of times. Right now we're just going to try to be good parents, nothing romantic."
"So you're going to focus on the baby?"
"Good. Then I'm assuming the whole Kennedy thing is just you two being friendly right."
"I don't know how many times I have to tell you it was nothing."
"You asked her out for coffee."
"You know very well what that would mean to her, don't mess with her feelings, Lou."
"You're just saying that because you're banging her sister."
This time Harry slapped Louis behind the head, making Louis exclaim, "Fucking hell!"
"Maybe that'll knock some sense back into you."
"Unlikely." Louis said rubbing the back of his head. "And anyway, you were the one telling me to text her!"
"Yeah! But not invite her out on a date!"
"It was not a date!"
"Oi!" Niall said, kneeling on his seat to face them, "Keep it the fuck down, you twats. I'm trying to fucking sleep!"
Louis threw his pillow at him, hitting Niall on the shoulder, "Then go back to sleep!"
"Just fuck her and get it over with. We all know you think she's fit." Niall mumbled.
"What?" Liam mumbled sleepily.
"Go back to sleep." Niall said to Liam, getting back into his seat.
"Were you telling him to sleep with Reagan's little sister?"
"We all know he's going to do it anyway." Niall huffed.
"I am not!" Louis yelled from across the aisle.
"You better not." Harry mumbled looking at him.
"Yeah, listen to Harry." Liam said, clearly still half asleep.
Louis slid down into his seat, "Let's just keep watching the movie." He was too tired for this, and the Red Bull had clearly worn off.
"Sure change the subject." Harry said smugly.
"I'm not discussing this anymore."
"I'm just saying, remember that she's Lottie's age." Harry remarked as he pushed his hair back to put in the earbud.
Louis simply shook his head and hit play, when his life had become such a mess...he had no idea. If it would ever go back normal? Well he sure hoped it would.
