thirty when he got in and he sat and went over everything in bed with Maggie before closing his eyes and going to sleep.
Tuesday 24th May
Maggie was up at six she cooked breakfast and it was ready and on the table by quarter to seven. Steve got up wearily; Steve mentioned the fact that they would both be working seven days a week and would need to take on someone to cover whilst he was at the cash and carry or seeing to the draymen.’
Would this be full time asked Bobby? Who had not long got in?’
“Yes I reckon so, why.’
“I know the very person; she has bar experience, she is a very good cook so she could help out with the cooking and serving of meals.’ She lives in Whitley bay and if you allow her to live on the premises you have someone here when you need her.’
“That’s a great idea, who is this person?’
“You call her Martine; do you want me to ask her later?’
“You wouldn’t mind asking her Bobby.’
“I will call her today; mind you are going to have to make it worth her while coming here; no good offering the same rate as Fitzgerald’s.’
“She is on about six pounds an hour so if you offer eight fifty you will get her.’
“Yes that will be fine Bobby; just ask her for me.’
“She won’t need to come for interview will she?’
If you say she is good enough, I will take your word for it Bobby.’
“Good soon as I’ve had a shave and got myself ready I will give her a call.’
Steve used the bathroom first so that he could get ready for going to work.
He put on a pair of black trousers and a white shirt and a black waistcoat. He took his striped apron with him that he could wear when doing the lines as he saw it could be a messy job as was changing the barrels over. He polished his black shoes, and then he had a shave and combed his hair.
You look very smart Steve said his wife as she straightened his tie for him.
Right whilst you are away I will begin packing some of our gear.’
Tommy Cottingham dropped the some boxes off last night and the plumber is coming down at 9am to look at the bathroom and kitchen in the pub. Maybe we could have a look at a new bathroom suit.’
“Good idea I will meet at lunch time I’m sure Bobby will pick you up.’
Better still said Bobby why don’t I go with you to choose a bathroom suit, cooker, and what ever else that you need then Steve won’t be rushing around. He needs to learn everything there is to know about the pub game.’
“Would you do that for me Bobby; that would be a great help.’
No problem; right get your glad rags on and I will run you down there. We can drop Steve off first then go have a look around the showroom.
Maggie went to change and fix her hair whilst Bobby rang Martine’s number on his mobile.’
Hello Martine; I haven’t woke you have I.’
No I was just getting ready for work.’
“Listen I have a proposition for you how would you like to be earning eight fifty an hour working in my sisters new bar restaurant.’
“Eight fifty I only get five pounds twenty here.’
Is it part time or full time Bobby?
Full time; you will get time off and there’s a flat upstairs going that is going to get fully modernised and will be ready in two weeks.’
