Looking at his watch it was now two in the morning in four hours he would have to leave.
Bobby walked down to the East Coast taxi office where he took a cab back to Vern Road it was now six thirty and he’d only had a couple of hours sleep. He opened the door and let himself in then went to his room took off his boots and lay on the bed ands was out like a light in five minutes. He slept right until nine thirty when the familiar smell of grilled bacon woke him up. He went to the bathroom washed and shaved using his electric razor then cleaned his teeth before walking into the kitchen.
“Good night then Bobby?’
“yes but too much Ale, my head is fit to burst She took two Alco seltzer tablets and placed them into a glass then ran the cold water tap before filling up the glass and dropping the tablets in.
“Here wait until they dissolve before drinking it. ‘
“Thanks; it’s a while since I’ve drank that much I can tell you.’
“Where did you go?’
“Just about all the bars on the esplanade I think.’
“Where did you end up.’
A place called Deep in the Rex hotel, do you know it?’
“Yes I’ve heard of it.’
“Well there were these two reps from Guinness and Carlsberg there giving away vouchers for free pints well we just kept going back and back.
“It’s a wonder you haven’t got alcohol poisoning.’
“Did you meet anyone?’
“Yes we met loads of people I knew from way back.’
“I didn’t mean that Bobby.’
“I don’t kiss and tell you know me by now Maggie.’
“Well I heard you roll in this morning so I guess that is a yes.’
Maggie made him a full English breakfast with mushrooms and even black pudding.
There was fried bread and toast on the table as well. Maggie took out a jar of Robertson’s Golden shred with the golly on the front and set it down on the table then set about making a pot of tea.’
“Don’t forget we are going into North Shields this morning.’ just then the phone went and Maggie picked it up.’
“It’s Simon for you.’
Bobby stood up and took the phone
“Hello Simon did you get home okay?’
“Right no worries Simon see you later.’
“What was he after?’
“He wants to know if I’m coming out tonight.’
Bobby lied as Simon asked Bobby to tell John’s wife that they were playing cards and that he’d stayed over at Simon’s house last night. Bobby smiled knowing that they both must have scored with Heather and Susan last night.’
Bobby got back to eating his breakfast; he drank two pots of tea after it and felt much better.
Right then give me half an hour and then I will get myself ready. Leave the dishes to me Maggie; go and get yourself fixed up.’
