"Well, Harry, are you going to bring her out to meet me? Or will I just have to meet her when the cops come to pick you up?" Carlos threatened.
I bit my lip, trying to control my anger, and motioned for Chelsea to come out of the room. I held the door open as she walked through, keeping her eyes to the ground in fear. I wanted to protect her, but there wasn't much I could do in this situation. Boss was dangerous and Carlos was his second hand.
"Hello, love. The names Carlos, and you must be Chelsea. I've heard a lot about you. First, that you were kidnapped by Harry, then with more research, where you went to school, lived, worked. The funny thing is that you were supposed to be working off your service hours today, or at least that's what your mom told me."
Fear struck into Chelsea's eyes when her mom was mentioned.
"What the fuck do you want, Carlos?" I said, not wanting to hear anymore of his shit talk.
Carlos smirked evilly at me. "Harry, there is no need to rush things. I'm just making small talk." He said, throwing a wink at Chelsea.
Anger and annoyance began to boil inside me. I began to clench and unclench my fist. Carlos just laughed.
"Well I better get going. Although, Harry, Boss is expecting you tonight for dinner. 6pm sharp. And I will definitely be seeing you later, love." And with that, Carlos left.
I turned to the wall. "Damn it." My fist hit the wall. My eyes met Chelsea's, who's was full of tears.
My face softened as I pulled her into my arms. Her smaller body shook against mine. I kissed her head trying to comfort her. "I'm sorry you got pulled into this, but I promise I'll clean up this mess I made."
I felt her hands push her body away from me. "The mess you made?" She questioned.
I knew that I had to tell her now. "It's a long story, I may not get to all of it before you have to go back home, but go ahead and sit down."
I told Carlos to meet up at the park, knowing that no one would guess we would be there. He always had my back when I needed it. I had finally given up trying to deal with my moms problems, and Carlos told me he had a place for me to stay.
"Thank you so much, mate. I've just had enough with my mom." I told Carlos, once he got there.
"No problem. You just need to meet Boss first. He's like a dad to me except he doesn't have all those shitty rules."
I laughed, knowing Carlos wasn't the one to play on the safe side.
Once we walked into the doors of where Carlos had brought me, there were huge, intimidating guys everywhere. He greeted them without fear.
"Hey. Is Boss available right now?" Carlos asked one of them.
"Yeah, he's in the other room." One of the guys answered.
"Okay. Come on, Harry. Trust me, he's so cool." Carlos encouraged me.
I walked in to see a man sitting down at a desk reading an article about a drug case bust. He put it down to greet who came into the room.
"Carlos! Who the hell is this?" He asked smiling.
"This is my friend Harry." He answered.
Boss extended his hand out to me to shake it. I took it. "You have a strong shake. Good for you. So why did you bring him?" He asked Carlos.
"He needs a place to stay."
"Hmm..okay, but do you have any job or a way you could pay me back with?" Boss asked me.
"I don't." I answered, shamefully, knowing that it wasn't off to a good start.
"Hmm...well, I got a job that you could do, but you'd have to sign a contract. Carlos you want to step out while Harry and I talk business?" Carlos left the room smiling and giving me a thumbs up. "You see, Harry, I run a very successful business. You want to know what makes it so successful? I use children. No one ever would suspect a child. So, Harry, do you want to know what this business is or do you want to run out crying like a pussy? But you either sign it, or leave, you need to make the decision now."
I sat for a while, wondering what the job may be, knowing that it is probably illegal. I picked up the pen, and signed the paper he'd placed in front of me. "So what's the job?"
Boss smiled. "First, you'll start small. My business is based on Fraud and Drugs. You will work with park/recreation center transactions. And talk to people on phones, persuading them to buy our insurance, which is really nothing. If you do this, you can stay here and also get paid some, depending how well you do. You start tomorrow on the phone's. You'll have a script but you can always add in your own flare once you get the hang of it. Carlos!" He called. "Show Harry to his and your room."
Carlos and I left the room.
End of FLASHBACK.
"And then about half a year ago, I decided to back out of the contract, because of some personal issues between Carlos and I, but we don't have time for that today. I got to get you to your car." I said, looking at my watch.
Chelsea's eyes looked at me in shock. "Okay." She said, getting up and walking straight to my car.
