The Civil War of Annesia

The kingdom, once a beautiful and prosperous land, has fallen. Thousands of years of unrelenting war has shattered it into three new lands, and their history is all but forgotten. The now ruined capitol of the kingdom of old has been found, and myth claims that it holds a gemstone so powerful, one kingdom could destroy the others, and rise up to become the most powerful in existence.

8. Deadly Duo

"Saeflod, be quiet. I hear a patrol."
"Over there." She gestured to five people, walking in a delta formation.
"Can you get them to slow down or stop for a minute?"
    "I'll try."
"Ok. Just distract them, while I try to steal one of their necklaces."
She took her bow off of her back, loaded an arrow into it, and drew it back. She  released, and it sailed into a bush nearby the people. They froze, and began looking for the source of the noise.
Saeflod rushed down the tree, and into a patch of tall grass. He crept closer to the squadron, one hand clutching his wand, the other the dagger. He stole a glance at the soldiers, who had now returned to their route, and were walking down a path that ran alongside the field of in which Saeflod lurked. And now, we wait.
They were coming ever closer, their feet crunching leaves under their feet. Almost there! He heard them pass by him, and carefully lifted his head. He started lifting his dagger with his wand, and moved it in the direction of the nearest person. Here we go. He inched it nearer to him, bit by bit, until it almost touched the back of his neck. Gingerly, carefully, he slipped the knife into the necklace. With one sharp, deft motion, Saeflod cut the string, and the amulet fell to the ground. Woo hoo!

After the soldiers had gotten far enough away, he snatched up the pendant, and put it in his pocket. He snuck back over to Brocke's tree, and climbed back up to her.
    "Did you get the emerald?"
He pulled it out of his pocket and presented it to her, with a proud grin. "Thanks for the help!"
"You're welcome. You're really good with that dagger of yours!"
"I can't believe he didn't feel it. That was really hard."
"Better than I could ever do."
"You shot that arrow way more accurately than I could, by far."
"So, what do you need the pendant for, anyway?"
"Actually, it's a long story. I need it for a huge mission in two days. Although, I could really use a guide and/or partner for it, and you seem like you would be perfect."
"If my captain is okay with it, I'd be glad to help you."
