Saeflod was stumped. No matter how much he improved at earth magic usage by the end of the third day, which it was today, he still couldn't subvert a spell as sophisticated as the defensive wards that guarded Hierdelicia. It was far beyond any skill he could learn.
It didn't help that the emerald Brockelle had brought him was so impure. He needed way more magic than he had access to, because the streaks of sapphire in it reduced its capacity for earth magic.
Wait a second! That's it! A crystal with both emerald and sapphire in it! He suddenly realized that he had exactly what he needed. With both kinds of magic contained in the gem, it could act as a converter from water magic to earth magic, allowing him to use both interchangeably.
He finally knew what to do: he would sabotage the jewels that powered the barrier with a gemstone like the one he now held, and disrupt it at the exact moment he slipped through the gate.
Having now memorized her communication frequency, Saeflod called Brocke, and told her everything he had just determined.
"That's brilliant! How in the world did you come up with something like that?" she exclaimed.
"Oddly enough, it was because of the impurity of the emerald you gave me."
She laughed, from both irony and excitement.
