(adj) living in the moment, detached from the bothers of life
Sometime that same night I agreed to attend as Matthew's date at some kind of fancy business event a few days later. And I was excited to get all dressed up and go out and be all adult-y with this amazing guy, but I felt quite intimidated by it too. There would be a lot of important people there, and I was just this girl with her life far from figured out. I knew that their opinion wouldn't matter even a little bit, but I still couldn't help but worry anyway. I was just human after all.
So it was Saturday night. We'd have to be there at seven and it was about 6PM when I was standing in front of my mirror dressed in this black cocktail dress that my mom had told me to bring just in case of something like this happening. I couldn't believe that she'd actually been right. She'd be ecstatic to know that I was going out with a journalist. Or, calling it "going out" might've been a tad too much, I guess we were "seeing each other" in a way. This would only be our third time hanging out.
But I was standing there in front of the mirror dressed in that black dress with a matching pair of heels. I'd tried my best to do a fancy up-do by following a YouTube tutorial, and at this point it just was whatever it was. There wasn't time to redo it. A sigh left my lips just as the door to my room opened and Parker peaked his head through the opening.
"Do I look alright?" I asked and looked at him with a bit of a frown on my face. He hesitated to answer. "Is it that terrible?" I added when he didn't say anything right away.
"No," he started as he stepped all the way through the door, "you look incredible."
I couldn't help but smile at his kind words, but I felt bad for the way he looked at me. He looked at me like I used to look at Calum and I hated that. My heart was not for him. I was not for him. He deserved somebody equally as amazing as him, whoever that might've been.
"You're so sweet", I said as I turned to the mirror once again to adjust one final time.
"So, are you and this Matthew-guy a thing or what?" he kept on. He was still standing in the door opening.
"No", I hesitantly answered, feeling a slight heat in my cheeks. He didn't seem that upset, though, I felt quite relieved by that.
"You are, aren't you?"
I didn't answer because I didn't know. We'd just started seeing each other, so it was hard for me to really tell where it was going, but I really cared about Matt. He was so great. Maybe we would eventually be "a thing."
"Well, no matter what... I just hope you're happy", Parker continued before turning around and leaving the room.
About half an hour passed before I finally heard a knock on the front door. I ran out into the hallway and opened it just to see Matt in front of me. He was dressed in this white suit, making his dark features stand out. I felt my heart beating faster in my chest just by the look of him, and for a second I couldn't fathom how I'd randomly stumbled upon somebody like him.
"Wow", he sighed before taking a step forward and pulling me in for a hug.
"I know, you look amazing", I answered as he pulled away. He really did look incredible.
"You ready?" he asked after a second of the two of us just admiring one another, and I nodded as I grabbed my purse and shouted a quick goodbye to Parker. Then we left.
Matt drove us there. The entire thing was being held in this conference room at this fancy hotel on the other side of town, and on the way I started to feel more and more intrigued by it all. Matthew's entourage consisted of almost exclusively businesspeople, I wasn't in any way on his level in that sense.
"You alright?" he asked as we walked through the lobby of the hotel on our way to the conference room.
"I'm just nervous", I answered and sighed. Then I felt our hands brush against each other, followed by the feeling of his fingers intertwining with mine. A slight smile formed on my lips because of it.
"Don't be", he answered and gently squeezed my hand.
"That's easy for you to say", I answered with a slight nervous chuckle.
Then he stopped walking just as we reached the door and turned towards me.
"Look, Ella, you're going to be alright. You're absolutely beautiful and intelligent and funny... They're going to love you, and if not, screw them."
I was almost lost for words after that. I felt a comfortable, warm feeling spreading in my chest and I couldn't help but smile. There was absolutely no way that I deserved somebody like him, but I wasn't going to throw what we had away because of my own self doubt. Maybe I was unworthy, but I wasn't going to be plain stupid too.
"Matt?" I asked and bit down on my lower lip ever so slightly, "kiss me."
A smile made its way across his lips before he finally leaned in and gently pressed his lips to mine in a short, sweet kiss before pulling away once again and nodding towards the door.
"Let's get this over with."
The walls where white and the floor was of some kind of light wood. Chandeliers hang from the ceiling and white curtains hang from each side of each of the huge windows. There was a table lined up on the opposite side from where we were standing filled with glasses of champagne and different kinds of canapés. Huge flower pots were placed along the walls and soft music came from somewhere that I couldn't detect.
There were quite a lot of people there too. Women in beautiful dresses and men in their tuxedos. I couldn't help but squeeze Matthew's hand just a little tighter before grabbing his arm instead, figuring it looked more elegant.
"Relax", he whispered and chuckled lightly as he leaned in towards me before walking with me to the opposite side of the room and getting the both of us a glass of champagne.
"Well, if that ain't my favorite employee!"
We both turned around by the sound of the voice that suddenly shot through the air only to face this slightly chubby, slightly short man in a brown suit. He was balding a bit too.
"Mr. Rivera, so nice to see you", Matt answered, before letting go of me to shake the man's hand. I had no idea of who this seemingly nice gentleman was, but judging from what Mr. Rivera had said, I guess it was Matthew's boss.
"You too, but who's this lovely lady?" he asked and turned to me. I just shot him a smile. I'd figured the entire "smile and nod"-thing would be the easiest way to get through the evening.
"This is Ella, an acquaintance of mine."
"Just an acquaintance, huh? If I were you I'd be quick to change that", Mr. Rivera laughed and playfully patted Matt on the shoulder. I tried to just ignore his comment. "Anyway, I better get going."
Matt just smiled as Mr. Rivera went on to the next person, then he turned to me again.
"Just an acquaintance, huh?" I repeated and tilted my head slightly to the side, taking a sip of champagne with a light smirk on my lips.
"What did you want me to say?" Matt asked and chuckled, also drinking a bit of champagne from the glass in his hand.
I then stepped closer and placed a hand on his chest, softly letting it glide down a bit until I removed it once again.
"Mhm, I don't know. But I guess I can be your acquaintance", I answered and shrugged. Matt just rolled his eyes at me and we both laughed.
So, the entire thing went quite well. It was pretty much how you would imagine it. A lot of chit-chat about stuff that I wasn't in any way qualified to know anything about, so I just stood there and tried to look nice as middle aged woman tried to discreetly come onto Matthew and men showed off their cheesy work-humor.
"Hey, I'll be back in a second", I mumbled as I leaned in towards Matthew, before letting go of him and walking to the bathroom. It seemed pretty empty when I got there, so I just took a moment to stand in front of the mirror and take a few deep breaths before reaching into my purse to grab my lipstick, just giving it a light touch-up.
That's when the door leading to the hallway to the conference room opened, and I assumed it was just some lady, so I didn't put much thought to it, but then I saw Matt's reflection as he made his way to me, just to end up right behind me. He placed his hands on my hips and leaned in, pressing his lips against the warm skin on my neck, sending a wave of chills through my body.
"What are you doing?" I frantically asked, putting the lipstick back in my purse before placing the purse itself on the counter.
"Nothing", he mumbled back and kissed my neck once again.
"It doesn't feel like nothing, Mr.", I answered and bit down on my lower lip, my eyes on our reflection in the mirror.
"What does it feel like then?" he whispered, before pushing up against me, trapping my body between him and the counter. I hesitated to answer as I felt my mind get clouded with what was mostly lust, making me grip the edge of the tabletop. Then I guess I got some sense back in my head as I turned around to face him, placing my hands on his chest instead.
"Somebody could walk in here at any second", I said and raised my eyebrows a bit.
"Then let's get out of here... We've been here long enough", he answered and let his lips brush against mine. There honestly wasn't much I wanted more than to get out. With him. Take it someplace else.
He walked out of there first, followed by me just a moment later to make it seem like a coincidence. Nobody seemed to notice anything anyway, though. Matt said his goodbyes and I just waited by the exit, and after about five minutes we were finally on our way out.
We got to his apartment shortly after since it was in the same part of town. I think the both of us tried to keep our cool during the entire ride home, but if he wanted me as much as I wanted him, he must've had a hard time containing himself too. I was slightly tipsy and pretty crazy about this guy. A dangerous combination indeed.
He fumbled with the keys and I kissed his neck, but then he finally got the door open and pulled me inside. The door slammed behind us as he slammed his lips to mine. My hands were frantically pulling off his jacket and throwing it on the floor, before finding their way into his dark hair, pulling lightly at the strands. He unzipped my dress and I helped him get it off of me, feeling it fall down around my body and hit the floor, leaving me in only my underwear and my high heels.
He pulled away from the kiss, and I could feel his eyes on me at the same time he let his hands slide down the side of my body until they stopped at my hips. None of us said anything, we just kind of looked at each other as I unbuttoned his shirt and taking it off of him, exposing his toned torso.
"You want to?" he quietly answered. I knew what he was referring to, and I wanted it, so I just nodded.
After just a second of hesitation he leaned in and kissed me softly just one last time before picking me up in his arms and carrying me to the bedroom.
So, I haven't made an update in a while and I'm sorry about that, but there is a lot going on right now that I have to take care of as well. Even though I love creating this story, I must put my "real life" first. I think you understand that.
I've also thought about something lately, and I don't want any of you to take this the wrong way, but a general tip to when you're reading and enjoying a story is to give feedback or something like it. Any kind of response usually gets welcomed with open arms with any artist, writer, etc. It just shows that somebody cares for what you're putting your time into creating, if you know what I mean. I'm not saying this in an attempt to "get attention" or anything like it, I just know from personal experience that no response from readers can feel a little discouraging.
All in all I hope you enjoyed reading this new chapter. I know it wasn't really the best one so far, but this has been laying around for ages and I just had to get it out of the way. I have another two chapters in stock for you guys, and I hope to get them out there as soon as possible, but once again, life comes at you fast.
Lots of love. x
