Everyone had finished dinner and Adelita was cleaning up. Adelita and Becca it seemed had started to switch jobs. Adelita now cleaned and Becca now cooked. Once everyone had left except for Jessie, I pulled her aside for a minute.
“Jessie, look, I know you don’t want to talk, but I just want to apologize.”
Jessie stepped over to the far wall with me and nodded.
“I’m sorry for what happened to Kyle. I shouldn’t have been so careless. It won’t happen again. Promise.” I apologized.
“As long as it doesn’t happen again, you’re off the hook.” Jessie replied.
“I’m really sorry.” I said once more.
“It… It wasn’t your fault. I just felt like I had to blame someone. Kyle really likes you ya know. So… I’m sorry Charlotte.” Jessie shocked me.
Kyle likes me? Oh my god. Do I like him? No! I don’t like Kyle! I just nodded with a small smile and we both carried on. I went to Kyle’s room and knocked. I heard a slow moan as he slowly trudged to the door.
“Oh, Charlotte. Hey.” Kyle said stunned that it was me.
“Hey, um… can we…” I didn’t finish. I just pointed to his bed.
He nodded and we went over to sit on his bed. I walked slowly, matching his pace. His cot was slightly bigger than all the other’s I’ve seen. He also had two sheets instead of one. Probably because Jessie likes him so much. I was a tad jealous though.
“So,” I started, “What do you think will change about the jobs tomorrow?”
“I don’t know. I think we’ll have more guards and less people inside. Maybe we’ll recruit.” Kyle replied.
“Recruit?” I asked incredibly confused.
“I forget you’re pretty new. Sometimes in the Shades, if one particular bunk is being threatened multiple times, we communicate with other bunks and recruit people. Everyone’s like a family out here. We just recently sent some people over to Bunk 5. They were getting ambushed twice a week. They needed two men, and one girl. We sent two strong guys named Bradyn and Allen over there. Along with a girl, I think about eleven years old, named Devon. They needed two guards and a cleaner.”
“Wow.” I was just shocked.
So much information. First of all, we might be getting some new people tomorrow. Second, There are at least five other places, or bunks, here. I also wanted to figure out how the bunks communicate. How do the people get sent to places? Do they walk? Is there a secret way of transportation? There was so much I wanted to know!
“So why did you come here?” Kyle asked.
“Just wanted to see what you thought about tomorrow.” I said shyly.
“Oh.” Kyle stated, seeming disappointed.
“I guess I better go see Madi. She’s probably all rattled. Knowing her, she’ll want to be caught up on everything she missed.” I explained, heading toward the door.
“Okay. Bye.” Kyle said as I left.
Something felt different. A good different. I didn’t know what though. I just shrugged it off and went to go catch Madi up on all the details. There sure was a lot that she had missed.
