31. They Know
I wake up to the thud of dinner tray hitting the concrete. Kyle is still asleep, so I get up and grab the tray. Kyle was right, it’s pretty much the same as lunch. Except for a banana though, we each have half an apple.
I debate if I should wake Kyle up. I decide not to, and to let him sleep. I eat my half of an apple slowly. It wasn’t very filling; no surprise there. Then I drank half my glass of water, ate half a bread loaf, and drank the other half a glass of water. This was a routine I would get in to the habit of.
Kyle is still asleep. I push the rest of the tray to the side and leave it. I watch Kyle as he dreams. He is laying on his right side, his chest moves up and down. He is peaceful, calm.
The calmness is disturbed by the opening of the hatch. “Hey, is the girl up yet?” A voice calls out.
I don’t know what to do. I go over to Kyle and shake him violently. His eyes slowly open. He is still tired, I can tell.
“Hey!” The voice calls out again.
Kyle jolts awake. “They asked if I was awake!” I whisper in a rushed tone.
I hear a few clicks, and it’s too late. The man has entered and can see clear as day that I’m awake.
