We must have been there for only about ten minutes, but it seemed like an hour. I was feeling very cramped. I figured it was probably safe to head back to the safe room now.
“Hey,” I began as I moved from my cramped hiding place, “I think it should be clear.
As I got up, I accidentally bumped in to a glass mason jar. “Damnet!” I whispered.
Then I heard a man’s voice from a nearby room say, “Ben! I heard something from this room!”
I quickly squeezed myself back under the shelf, hoping Kyle was ready to shoot. My anticipation grew as the steps got louder, and closer. Suddenly, the door flew open and it caught me so off guard that I gasped. Just like that, I heard two bangs, and two thuds.
I about screamed, because one of the guy’s bodies landed right in front of me. He was staring at me. He didn’t blink, and he wouldn’t ever blink again.
I was immediately distracted by the sound of voices and footsteps again.
“I heard gunshots over there!” One guy yelled.
Three more gunshots, and three more thuds. Then, once again, another voice said, “I think I heard more gunshots with way!”
Three men came in, but I didn’t hear any gunshots. I looked over at Kyle, who had a panicked look on his face. It took me a minute to process why he wasn’t shooting. Then I realized what was going on. His gun was jammed.
Damnet, damnet, damnet!
I slowed my breathing so it would be quieter. I slowly inched further under the shelf. Why did I have to knock that jar over?!
“I don’t see anything.” One deep-voiced man said.
“Check behind those boxes!” Another man instructed.
Shit! I was filled with panic! What would they do if they found Kyle? That was a stupid question. I knew what they would do.
A different man punched the boxes out of his way, and I knew it was over. He grabbed Kyle and threw him against a wall. I was filled with rage and had to act fast. I scanned the room looking for something. Anything! I looked over to the broken jar. That was really my only option. So I grabbed The longest piece of broken glass and charged at the man who threw Kyle.
I sliced open his neck and watched him fall to the ground. He was gagging, and probably wouldn’t last long. I looked at the other two men. Neither had a gun or a knife, or any sort of weapon.
One with a beard charged after me. I tried to stab him in the stomach, but I was too late. I was pinned to the ground. I glanced at Kyle who was unconscious in the corner. This was all on me. I bent my wrist just enough to cut the man’s hand with the shard of glass. He released both of my hands, allowing me to punch him in the gut.
I felt good that he was in pain, but I guess I forgot about the other guy. He came and punched me hard in the face. My vision was blurred momentarily, but it quickly came back. I created a deep gash in the knee cap of the one who punched me. He wailed giving me enough time to wiggle free.
I was now standing. I stabbed the guy with the beard once more, this time in the gut. He layed on the ground with his hands trying to stop the bleeding. He’d be dead in minutes.
The other guy gave me another blow to face, cutting my upper lip. Then another blow, this time to my lower jaw. I got him back for that by cutting his cheek.
Then he barreled toward my knees, trying to tackle me. That gave me the perfect view of the back of his neck. I lodged the glass in there and let go. He stumbled backwards and fell. I took some deep breathes, trying to take all of that in. I just killed three men.
I ran over to Kyle who seemed slightly awake. He had a huge bump on the back of his head.
“Oh my god! Are you okay?
“Me?! You just took on three big men with only a piece of glass!” Kyle laughed.
“You saw?” I asked.
“Partly.” Kyle replied in short.
“Come on, let’s go!” I say remembering Madi.
Kyle tried to get up, but immediately fell back down. I didn’t want to waste anymore time, so I helped Kyle up slowly and practically dragged him to the safe room, and down the stairs.
Heads turned with amazed expressions as Kyle and I entered. I carefully sat Kyle down against the wall, and handed him a pillow. Jessie immediately went and tended to Kyle. I ran and handed the bags to Claire.
“I didn’t know which one would work, so I just grabbed both and…”
Oh. My. God.
What I saw completely stunned me. I was filled with so many emotions. I couldn’t believe it.
