After staying up until nearly 1:00am last night, explaining everything to Madi, I was not looking forward to waking up at 5:00am this morning. Jessie told everyone to wake up early so we could have all day to plan and get used to our new positions.
I didn’t even change my clothes. I just brushed my hair really quick and headed to the kitchen. I was the third one there. Madi and Claire had come in together, and of course Jessie was already there.
It was about 5:10 and we were still missing Kyle and Adelita. Jessie decided to send people to go get them. Jessie told Talia to go get Adelita and she told me to get Kyle. I was hesitant at first, but I complied.
I got to Kyle’s room, and didn’t bother knocking. I walked right in. Kyle was sleeping on his right side, with one arm dangling off the cot. I debated how I should wake him up. I decided to just say his name a few times. When that didn’t work, I shook him lightly. He slowly opened his eyes.
“Hey, why’d you wake me up?” Kyle asked, rubbing his eyes.
“It’s 5:10. You’re late.” I replied.
“Crap. My alarm didn’t go off.” Kyle rolled his eyes.
I couldn’t blame him. Everyone had a crappy alarm clock that rarely worked. I wouldn’t be surprised if the times on our clocks were very different.
“Come on.” I said.
“Let me get dressed really quick.” Kyle replied as he started walking over towards a pile of clothes.
I didn’t know what to do. At first, I just watched him. Then I realized it was weird, so right before he took off his shirt, I turned away.
“We’re not in the brainwash city. You won’t get in trouble for looking at me.” Kyle mentioned.
“I know. I just… I don’t know.” I shyed away.
“Better get used to it sometime Charlotte. That’s how we do things here.” Kyle explained.
“Fine.” I stated, turning to see Kyle.
Kyle’s shirt was on the floor. He hadn’t even picked up his new one yet. He was skinny from the lack of food, but I could still wake out a six pack of abs. I stared at his muscular arms. I realized I might be overstepping my boundaries, so I turned my eyes back to his face.
“That wasn’t so bad, was it?” Kyle laughed.
Kyle took his pants off, and that made me look away again. I had grown up in a world where love was a disease. I couldn’t suddenly change that. It still felt strange.
“I’ll uh… meet you in the Kitchen.” I said quickly.
“Charlotte! Wait. Did I say something… or…” I cut Kyle off.
“No. It’s just different. It’s not you. I like you Kyle.” Oh my god. What did I just say?!
“I like you too Charlotte.” Kyle replied, inching closer to me.
“I’ll meet you in the Kitchen Kyle.” I abruptly left the room and stormed off to the kitchen.
Adelita was there with Talia. I told Jessie that Kyle was coming. I tried to process what just happened. I had to stay away from Kyle. I couldn’t like Kyle! There was no way he would ever like me anyway, no matter what Jessie said. Kyle was probably just really tired and didn’t know what on Earth he was saying.
Kyle came in moments later and sat right next to me. He whispered in my ear, “Talk in your room at noon.” I didn’t reply or nod. I just sat there thinking of how much I liked Kyle.
