I nodded as Kyle left, waiting for the door to click shut so I could let out a few stray tears. I didn’t cry about Kyle, or Madi. I cried because I just realized that my old life is gone forever.
I had fallen asleep fairly quickly. I didn’t even wake up when Talia came in. I had no clue what time it was. I’d guess it was around 6:00am. Talia was shaking me saying wake up.
I sat up abruptly.
“We need to go to the safe room!” Talia screamed.
I realized there was a siren going off. I didn’t move out of shock.
“Now!” Talia usually wasn’t bossy or pushy so that scared me.
I got up and started to follow Talia. I didn’t even grab my bag. We headed down several hallways and through several rooms until we reached a metal door. Talia punched in some sort of code and the door opened.
“Wait! What about Madi?!” I screamed.
“I’m sure she’s safe.” Talia said starting to head down the stairs.
“What’s this door’s code?” I asked in a hurry.
“3253. Why?” Talia replied quickly.
I slammed the door shut repeating 3253 in my head so I wouldn’t forget. I heard something that sounded like a scream coming from a nearby room. I ran towards the room.
It was the medical room where Madi was. Claire was curled up under Madi’s cot with a gun in her hand. She instinctively pointed the gun at me. I put my hand up.
“It’s just Charlotte.” I stammered over to Claire.
“Why are you here? Let’s get to the safe room!” I yelled starting to push the cot.
“We can’t take Madi.” Claire stated.
“Why not?!” I asked over the sounds of the sirens.
“We can’t move the cot. It’s too heavy.”
“Help me carry her for god’s sake!”
“If we carried her, we’d have to take the equipment that’s keeping her alive too and that’s too much for just the two of us.” Claire explained hopelessly.
Damnet. What was I going to do? Just then I heard the door to the medical room open. It was Kyle.
“What the hell or you two doing in here?!” He yelled.
“I’m not leaving Madi!” I screamed back.
“Damnet. Umm…” Kyle paused, thinking, “I’ll carry Madi and you both can carry the equipment.”
“Let’s go then!” I panicked.
Kyle grabbed Madi as her arms and legs dangled limply. I grabbed a few pieces of equipment as did Claire. We ran to the door. I had less things in my hand, so I punched in the code that I had miraculously remembered.
We rushed down a long metal stairwell in to a big concrete room. Talia was in the corner crying, but as soon as she saw me she jumped up and was immediately giddy.
“Why did you go back?” She asked as I put down the equipment.
Talia looked at Madi and that answered her question. Kyle was still holding Madi, looking confused. I ran to grab a blanket and a pillow from one of the shelves in the room. I set them down on the ground and helped make Madi comfy.
“Thanks.” I said to Kyle.
He just nodded and walked off. I went back to Talia. I was still confused as to why we were down in a safe room.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Flighters.” Talia said not going further in to an explanation.
“What the hell are Flighters?” I asked getting a bit angry.
“All they said was to stay hidden and don’t die.” Talia stated in short.
Don’t die. Great.
