34. Fresh Air
I completely forgot to ask Rick how to get out, so now we’re running blindly, looking for an exit. We’ve grabbed more weapons on our way out. Everyone now has a gun, and some of us have two. We’ve gone down several hallways by now. Kyle and Xavier are starting to fall behind since they’re carrying an extra 95 and 120 pounds. Kyle switches with Becca, and now Becca is carrying Talia. Becca can’t handle it for very long, so Becca hands Talia back to Kyle. We keep running until we reach a steel door that’s different from all the others. It requires keys. I pull out the keys I’ve stolen from Rick and clumsily unlock the door.
A breath of fresh air sweeps in. I see green grass and large trees brought to life with vivid green leaves. The sky is blue and the sun is high. It must be close to noon. Birds fly in high in the sky, spreading their different colored wings. And like the birds, we are free.
