I knew that that one click was the latch, not a lock. I had a plan. I needed to act quickly before Kyle got to his room. My plan with getting the door open was simple, just push and the flimsy latch will unhook. Then I will grab two small pistols off of the wall and hope they’re loaded. I count down in my head. 1...2...3! I push the door open, and it’s loud. Rick and Kyle come to an abrupt stop. I grab two pistols from the wall and point one at Rick. I don’t hear anyone coming from the other direction which is a relief.
“Come forward three steps.” I command so nobody in the rooms with windows can see. “Let him go!”
“What? You gonna shoot me? I bet you’ve never held a gun in your life!” Rick challenges.
“I told you, I’ve killed before. Now let him go or I’ll add you to my list!” I yell, still being careful so nobody else can hear.
Rick releases Kyle and Kyle comes to me. I want to hug Kyle, and I can tell he wants to hug me too. But there’s no time. I have the power. I can ask whatever I want, and Rick will answer.
“Now, you do as I say, or I shoot. Go in to that room,” I point to Talia’s room, “And say you need the girl in there. Then you bring her to me. Got it?”
Rick says nothing, but follows my orders. He opens the door, says something, and grabs Talia. He is holding Talia, who isn’t very conscious. I tell Kyle to go grab Talia. Kyle carries Talia back to where I am standing. Talia’s eyelids flutter, and she is motionless, still.
“Are there any other people in these cells?” I was furious.
“Cells 3 and 6.” Rick grudgingly replied.
“Open it!” I demand.
Rick gets his keys out and opens cell 3 first. I’m smart enough not to go in there, until he gives me the keys. I grab the keys from him, still keeping my gun pointed. I slide the other gun to Kyle. Kyle points it at Rick and I head in to the room.
There is Xavier and Jessie. Xavier gets up immediately when he sees me. He hugs me, which surprises me, but I hug him back. My eyes catch Jessie, who doesn’t even flinch.
“What did they,”
Xavier cuts me off, “Interrogation.”
I know what he means. I also realize how stubborn Jessie is. No wonder she is hurt so bad. I told him to grab her and we were gonna get out. He does as I say and he goes over to Kyle. Kyle looks frail in that moment. He looks at Jessie, and almost drops Talia. I see that Rick has started to come toward us, catching us off-guard. I point my gun back at him and he backs up a few steps.
“Open the other cell!” I am louder this time.
Rick follows my command like a little puppy obeying its owner. I give him his keys back and he opens the cell. I take his keys again and go in to the room. There is only one person in there; Becca.
Becca doesn’t appear to be hurt. She sees me and her eyes light up. She runs to me for a hug. She asks me what’s going on and I explain. She follows me back out and goes over with the others.
“Where is your cell partner?” I ask Becca, pointing my gun back at Rick.
“Talia.” She says, looking sadly at Talia’s limp body.
“Are there any others?” I was growing with confidence and rage.
“No.” Rick says.
“Don’t you dare lie to me!” I fire at him.
“Check the rooms is you want, pretty.” Rick states snobily.
I cock my gun after his remark. He steps back. I don’t know whether to believe him or not, but I’m not going to spend time checking every room. I look back at everyone as to ask should I believe him? Everyone nods.
I command Rick to go in to the open cell. He doesn’t even bother to argue. I lock the two locks, and hook the latch. I open the hatch and say, “Have fun in Hell dickhead.”
And all of us take off.
