There was Madi, holding Talia’s hand, eyes opened. I dropped the bags, thank god they didn’t break. At that moment though, I wouldn’t have cared if the zombie apocalypse had started. The only thing I cared about, was that Madi was awake.
Talia had the biggest grin on her face, as did I. Claire was taking things off of Madi and either leaving them on the floor, or placing them somewhere else.
I wondered if Madi could talk yet. I asked her a question, “Hey, do you know where you are?”
Madi opened her mouth, but nothing came out. Then Claire spoke, “She won’t be able to talk right away because I just took a tube out of her throat. She should be fine soon. Fine to talk anyway. The recovery process for her might be quite long.”
“Madi. We made it. We made it to the Shades and we’re finally Shadows. We’re free.” The biggest relief came over me after I said that.
Talia and I, being the friends that we are, began filling Madi in on EVERYTHING! She smiled a lot and let out a few giggles. Then we decided to talk about her favorite topic; boys.
“Okay, scale of 1-10, what is Xavier?” Talia asked Madi.
Madi held up five fingers and made out a faint “five” with her weak voice.
“Kyle?” Talia asked.
I felt awkward. I wanted to Madi’s answer however. I was surprised when she put up nine fingers and gave us a huge smile.
There was this feeling inside of me, sort of like rage. I was jealous. I was freaking jealous. To make my jealousy grow further, Talia asked, “Would you wanna date him?”
I got infuriated. What the hell was happening to me?! I didn’t like Kyle at all. I didn’t hardly know Kyle at all. And if Madi liked him, I was going to be happy for her. Madi shrugged her shoulders, not giving a yes or a no.
We continued ‘talking’ for another hour or so, as Madi slowly gained back her voice. It was raspy, but she could talk. After a little while, Claire joined in our conversations. It was weird at first, but then We sort of just formed a bond. Everything was amazing.
Then things turned again. We all screamed at the loud boom we heard from upstairs, outside the safe room. Talia and Claire were hugging each other lightly, and Madi and I were holding each other’s hands. Madi’s grip was weak, but I felt it.
“Shhh!” Jessie commanded inching towards the staircase.
We all listened for even the slightest of sound. Then we heard it. It became closer. Until it was here.
