14. The Guardian of the Forest
I had followed the white wolf back out of the darkness, and we walked as he told me about wolf culture. The light in the trees grew brighter, so I had the feeling we were headed to the castle grounds.
"The way of the wolf is simple, so this lesson will be short. I am the forest guardian. I defeat the threats in the forest and instruct new leaders. Since you are a new alpha, your territory is in the west, closest to human territory. There are only 2 rules in the forest.
1: take only what you need.
2: NEVER LET FULL HUMANS SEE THE ALTAR. For reasons I am about to explain, they cannot see it. You see, alphas and some very select pack members may be allowed to touch the gem every couple seasons at full moon, thus restoring their age and becoming young again. A pack may pick out two caves to have, making them their territory, but other than that, the forest belongs to everyone. You are a leader now. I am aware of your circumstances, but I assume that after your human education is done, you will return to the forest for permanent. Now, I have only one more thing to say to you, Alpha." The white wolf leaned in close, staring at my eyes with his bright blue ones. "Beware the spark." And he turned and was gone. MY head was spinning. Was I dreaming? My paws carried me back to the castle. I was so confused and drowsy that I forgot to morph until I was on the third corridor. I jogged back to ravenclaw tower and threw myself into my four poster, determined to have a quick and rested mind when I told Newt and Sky about my adventure.
