My breath came out fast, my heart stuttering with excitement. My hands shaking, I began to read the intruction page out loud to Sky and Newt. "So transform into ones animals form, they must simply repeat the nonverbal spell Hominum ut Animal (wand not required, though beginners should use one) until they change. To return to human form repeat spell backwards (Lamina tu Munimoh)."
Sky's eyes were wide and Newt was repeating the spells over and over under his breath. After several minutes of silence I decided to step up. "Well. Here goes nothing," I said, my voice shaking. "Just remember what I taught you about nonverbal spells. After we get the hang of transforming we can try without wands." I tugged my wand from inside my jacket and squeezed it in my quivering hand. I forced my brain to concentrate, and in my mind I repeated fiercely : Hominum ut Animal!
The effect was instant. I watched myself in a nearby mirror in amazement. My skin seemed to melt, hair shooting from my body as I seemed to shrink. After a few moments I stood, a full and complete wolf. My new body was even more muscular than my human form. I had thick black, glossy fur that seemed to glow silver in the light glinting from the windows. A coal black nose sat wriggling on the end of my snout. My eyes were deep as blue as the house from whence I came. But my new look was not what my mind was lingering on. My new nose was drinking in the air. I could smell everything in sight. I could tell that Sky and Newt were shocked and afraid by their smell! I could practically see where we had walked, traced on the ground in scent. My ears twitched as far away in the forbidden forest a branch snapped. Sounds I would never have even heard before were almost deafening. My eyes, however, where the same as usual.
Trying to grow accustomed to my new body, I leaped and sprinted around the room, bouncing off the walls and foot planting off the desk. I was almost more comfortable in my wolf body than I was in my regular form. I felt, for once, worry free. Like I was eleven again. I bounded up to Sky, leaning my paws up on her shoulders. My tail wagged and I tried to speak. I could hear the words cascading out of my mouth, but Behind It I could also here a faint barking/howling sound. I guess that was what they could hear because Sky laughed. I decided to morph back to help her again. Lamina tu Munimoh! I thought. I shot up, my fur retreating back into my now human body. I laughed, stretching my hands and pointing to Newton. "You're turn!" I said, shaking my hair back into place.
Newt had a little more trouble transforming than me. He was concentrating so hard his face was purple and his nose was wrinkled. He got it on his 3rd try, and he morphed into a stumpy tailed bobcat with small yellow eyes. His coat was a soft brown with black spots sprinkled on top. Shock was visible even through his new features. I laughed. I could still see Newt though his new disguise. But, I thought, I knew that no matter how Newts features changed, I would always recognize him as the nerdy boy I met on the train. Newt morphed back, his eyes wide.
"WOW!!" He said, his face alight. "That. Was. AWESOME!!" I realized that transforming was be a lot more bizzare to Newt and Sky, who had never had the experience of a metamorphasizing.
Next up was Skylar, who morphed on her 5th try. She stood before me as a small but strong fox, her glittering red coat reflecting the night that was now falling. She pranced around the room a couple times then morphed back, a beam on her face. We all stood there, three friends united by a common secret, and smiled at eachother. Sky was the first to speak.
"Ted, Newt... I just realized something." She grinned impishly. "The entire grounds are open to us now!!" We look at each other, mischief gleaming in our eyes. "I believe we have some exploring to do."
