brbThanks for keeping up so far!! That last chapter was mostly a filler. In the story, its almost christmas break. Please let me know if you have any suggestions, or tell me wheat you think. And please remember to leave a like and a comment!! Thanks!
"You're telling me that Dash Scamander doesn't exist?" Asked Sky, her eyebrows raised and voice dripping scepticality (no, it isn't a word. I made it a word.).
We were in the Potter's kitchen, helping James skin potatoes. It was christmas break, and Sky and Newt were coming over for Christmas Eve dinner, but Newton hadn't arrived yet.
"I'm having trouble believing it too! I couldn't tell you earlier because I didn't want to be overheard. I'm telling you, there is no record of a 'Dash Scamander' in any of the student logs, past or present. But I sent my owl to Luna, so maybe she will respond sometime soon."
"You dont want to be overheard?" She asked, glancing at James, who was obviously listening, and Albus, who was listening at the door while pretending to be reading the mail, but his eyes remained stationary.
"We can trust my brothers. I just can't tell my mom or dad, because they will not believe me. I'm not even sure if I believe me!" We peeled the potatoes in silence for a while, until the doorbell announced the arrival of Newt. I quickly filled him in, but to my surprise, he wasn't as skeptical as Skylar had been. "I mean, there have been reports of things like this happening before. And his shiftiness before, and leaving his broomstick behind, and asking for unnecessary help. Something is going on with that kid, or whatever kind of creature he is. I mean-"
"Teddy! Can you come out here and set the table?" Ginny called from the dining room. I cursed, grabbed a piece of turkey to munch on, and stomped out to the dining room, carelessly throwing plates onto the table. I grumbled to myself, wishing it was January 7th already so I could use my wand.
The sound interrupted the waves of silence that caressed my ears, and it seemed to rip at my eardrums. My head whipped around, to see a dark shape outside the big dining room window. Whatever it was scraped its nails down the window again, and I saw two gleaming eyes, illuminating the darkness. I raised my wand with a shaking hand, and stepped towards the window, heart attempting to escape my chest. Slowly, I reached towards the window, and trembling fingers grasped the window latch. I yanked it open and yelled, as a huge, black shape swooped in through the open window, landing on the floor, and squawking in an agitated manner. It ran towards me and nipped at my hand. I screamed and threw my arms over my head, but the beast had retreated, and was chomping down on the turkey I had held in my hand. I laughed. This was no beast. It was a thestral.
"Sky! Come quick!" I yelled, but before I finished she was already at the door, wand in hand and eyes on the turkey leg disappearing into the thestrals mouth.
"Ted!! You know we aren't allowed to use magic out of school! And if you were going to use magic, why use a vanishing charm?" She asked, rolling her eyes and lowering her wand.
"Oh merlin, I forgot, you can't see them. Its a thestral, Sky, and I think it's brought me Luna's reply."
"Why on earth would she send a thestral instead of an owl?" Asked Sky, backing away from where she thought were the thestral was, and bumping into the wall. "And how can you see thestrals?" She rubbed her head where she had bumped it.
"My grandmother, Andromeda Tonks. She died in Mungo's. I watched." I looked away, feeling ashamed of the tears that stung my eyes. Sky gave me a gentle hug as Newt burst into the room, chest heaving and a piece of toilet paper stuck to his shoe.
"James... said...you...called?" He gasped, trying to walk to us and bumping into the thestral. He squeaked and tumbled backwards into a chair. We laughed and told him about the thestral, and Sky walked to the entrance to the living room to make sure the adults didn't enter (they were huddled around a fire on the patio) , and Newt set James on the other entrance, and I walked towards the thestral, ready to read my letter.
I had trouble removing the letter from the thestral. Luna had magically attached it to the thestrals side, and I nearly lost a finger as I attempted to yank if off. Eventualy Newt figured out its counter and handed me the letter, looking quite exited. I unsealed it and my eyes greedily scanned it.
It was blank.
"What? How can this be possible?" I wailed, tossing it on the ground. Newt picked it up and his eyebrows knit together as he tried to comprehend a way to make everything ok. I sat down on the table and rested my head in my hands. There had to be another way around this, or was Luna just as cookoo as everyone had always said? She can't be that bad. Said a voice in my head. She was in Ravenclaw, after all. Wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure. I sighed, and tried to think, but only a blankness filled the screen of my brain.
"Ted?" Asked Newt, who had been muttering over the page for a while, though seemingly to no avail. "Come look at this." My heart stuttered and I leaped off the table and joined him on the floor. He was holding the paper over the light from the lamp, and 3 squiggly sentences were shining through in shimmering gold ink:
I believe your story and trust you completely, since you were raised by Harry. However, I don't want this thestral to be intercepted, so please meet me at the Hogshead fire at 10:28 PM saturday after next.
Luna Lovegood Scamander
P.S. Make sure there aren't any Blibbering Humdingers around; they are blabbers.
