” Don’t you feel horrible, surrounding an innocent young woman like that?”. The voice came from the other side of the crowd. The people’s attention shifted from the girl to where the voice had come from. The crowd then parted in two, as a person made his way through, into the middle.
The girl looked up and removed her hands from her ears. The people had gone quiet and weren’t giving ideas to how she should die anymore. Instead, they all looked at the newly arrived person. It was a young man, maybe two years older than her. Although, she couldn’t tell because she didn’t know her own age.
He stopped right before the girl and looked down into her eyes. He was blue like the others, but there was something different about him. His eyes were pretty. They looked like black opals, like they could see through everything, and understand what they saw.” are you unhurt?”. She realized he was talking to her, and brought out a weak yes. Upon her answer, he nodded and turned at the crowd. He then opened his mouth, and began negotiating.
“ As I’m sure you’ve all realized, this girl doesn’t quite look like the humans you’ve all seen so far. Am I right?”. The man looked around at all the people in the crowd while saying it. The girl could see a few persons reluctant agreeing with him. She looked up at him, just as he began talking again.” She is only a child, and not an adult. Maybe she didn’t come here for a specific reason, but rather by accident. All humans we’ve seen so far, have been grown-up people, with a purpose of abducting our people. I don’t think that she is here for that reason. She doesn’t even have her memory! How can she possibly have come here with a bad intention?”
The man’s words hang in the air. It took some time to sip in, but when it did, the mayor finally said something.” I can hear that you are going somewhere with this, Charles. What is your intention? That we should just let her go? Even without us doing something, she will die by the hands of nature!”. The girl looked at the man’s face. Was that his intention? That she was going to die by the hands of nature? And here she thought that he was covering for her.
The man got a grave expression on his face. ” No. what I am proposing is something else entirely… I’m suggesting that you should leave her to me, and let me care for her. This way, you don’t get to kill her, but you still won’t have her as a burden”.
The mayor see that it was a convenient solution and said “if you think that is for the best, Charles. But this isn’t like you. What did you see on your last voyage?”. The man just pulled the girl up on her legs. Then he walked away from the crowd of people, with the girl following close behind him, without answering the old man’s question.
