The girls played on the machines for twenty minutes then went back into the hall to play the main books. Linda went into her bag and pulled out two mars bars as Sheila went to the bar to grab a plastic jug then proceeded to fill it with chilled water. She grabbed two Pepsi cola cups from the bar then headed back to the table with them.

The jug held around four pints when it was filled. Sheila poured them each a glass then proceeded to un- wrap the chocolate bar. “Just love chocolate you know it is my one weakness.’

“What apart from men you mean.’

Don’t remind me said Linda who had had many failed relationships since the death of her husband six years before. These days she had just given up on the idea that men were the be and end all of her life. She had got herself stuck in a rut looking after her father, who was ruling her as if she was just a child. He constantly asked where she was going or asked why she was late (not that she was) but in his opinion she should be there at his beck and call.

“She loved her father but there were other family members who were not pulling their weight. The thing was when they came to visit he made such a fuss over them and never with her which hurt her deeply. She longed for freedom to do as she wished. Before her father became ill she would enjoy going on holiday with her friends now she was a full time carer for her father. Wednesday was her only night of freedom where for three or four hours she could unwind, relax, and just be herself.

The second half of the bingo began and she hoped that she would be lucky. So did Sheila, who had been living with a man for the last sixteen years but who Linda claimed was just using her. She ran after him like a lap dog and could never appease him. She would cook and bake for him and he would not even thank her or comment on the food. It was just expected. Deep down she knew the situation was hopeless but like Linda she was stuck in a rut and didn’t know what to do.

Both women were at the crossroads in their lives and hoped that something special would happen to change their lives forever.
