The two lads knew better to argue with their father so they waited until their mother had done the vegetables for the dinner before using the sink to get washed and changed.
When Annabella had finished she placed all the lids on the pans then placed them onto the wooden table ready to be put on. The meat was then placed into the tray and put into the oven.
“Are we all ready then asked Robert.’
“Just coming love; is my coat hanging on the door?
She put on her blue Turban hat with a bow then put on her coat.
The lads all put their coats on and wrapped a scarf around their necks as it was bitter cold.’
Tilly Matthews was on her way to church and asked where Muriel was.
“She’s gone away to her aunts to look after her said Annabella.’
“She’s a smashin’ lass is your Muriel.’
“We are ganna to miss hor I can tell yer Tilly.’
Did yer gan t Des McDonald’s funeral?
“We were there.’
“He got a good send off mind yer; there must have been a canny few from the shipyard there cos’ yer couldn’t see much for the amount of people there.’
Aye, I reckon there was well over a hundred people there Tilly said Robert.’
“A thort there wor yer na; wor Bill said aboot sixty odd but a telt him that there was more than that and a was reet.’
They reached the church and Robert held the door as they all went in.
They all found seats and sat down.
The Reverend Alan Young asked everyone to stand and sing “we lift our hearts to thee.’

When the hymn was sung the reverend went on to talk about adopting the heart of compassion of Jesus towards those in need.
He quoted Mathew; blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.
Zechariah: “Let the word of the Lord God say render true judgement, show kindness, and mercy to one another.’
Do not oppress the widow, the fatherless, the sojourner, or the poor, and let none of you devise evil against another in your heart.
He talked about Des McDonald’s widow Helen and her children; how people should show kindness and compassion towards their own town folk, be not strangers he said and share your last crust with those who need it most.’ Amen.
“We shall all sing “Guide me oh thou great redeemer.’
Everyone stood and sang whilst the offertory plate was passed around.’
When the service was over Annabella went over to Des McDonald’s wife and invited her and her children to come to dinner.’
