The taxi pulled outside of Muriel’s house; Muriel went to give him some money and he told her that Edward had already paid for her.’

“Thank you Charley.’

“You too Miss, Goodnight.’


Annabella Marshbanks came to the door having seen the taxi pull up.’

“Where on earth have yer been lass we’ve aal been worried aboot yer.’ Yer father is out looking for yer with Jimmy and Craig.’

“But mam I’m nearly twenty one.’

“I told you mother I met this gentleman at Tynemouth; today he took me to his house.

“He lives with his sister mam in a beautiful cottage in Tynemouth; I had tea with them man then we all went to the picture house and I watched Bleak House in the gallery mam; it was fantastic.’

“Gallery be Jesus, has this man more money than sense.’

“He was a Major in the army mam and now he’s a bank manager in Newcastle.’

“What on earth does he want with you?’

“I don’t know mam but he likes me.’

“Well I don’t think you’ll be seeing much more of him.’

“Why mam he’s a gentleman.’

“Here your letter came for you from your Aunt Ester.

Muriel opened the letter in fancy envelope and paper smelling of Lavender and it was from her Aunt.

“She quickly read it then passed it to her mother.’

“She will be at the station late tomorrow night to meet me.’

Just then the door opened and her father and brothers walked in.

“Where in the hell have you been girl?’ we’ve been searching every bloody street in Shields looking for you.’

Sit down and have a cup of tea I’ve got some good news to tell you.’

Robert sat whilst his wife poured them all tea then said. Our Muriel has met herself a gentleman. He was a major in the army and is now a bank manager,’

“Well I’ll be blown.’

“Muriel has met his sister today and they all went to the picture house together to see Bleak House and Muriel was sat in the gallery.’

“What on earth does he see in you asked Jimmy?’

“A gentleman; my beautiful daughter is walking out with a bank manager.’
