It was about 7:30 am. I never ate breakfast really, but I was hungry. I got up and grabbed a bagel. I put some butter on it and called it good. I texted Chloe to see if she wanted a ride. She said yes. I said I'd be there around 8:15 so we could get to school a little bit early.
8:10 rolled around, so I hopped in my car, a red jeep, and went to go pick up Chloe. I was right on time when I got to her house.
"Hey." We both said to each other nearly in sync.
"Why so early?" Chloe asked.
"It's not that early." I replied starting the car.
We didn't talk much on the way to school. What is there to talk about for two minutes?
We hopped out and walked in to school. We both sat at our usual table. Not surprisingly, we were the only ones there so far. Time for my plan. Though, it wasn't much of a plan. The only thing I had to do was be myself, only a little more outgoing.
Ryder got to the school a little early too. I was lucky our table was so close to the door.
"Hey Ryder." I said not even giving my chance a second to rethink.
"Hi." He replied friendly.
"I was wondering, when is our calculus homework due? Isn't it tomorrow, right?" I ask casually.
"Yeah. Tomorrow." He replied not taking his eyes off of me.
I liked how he stared at me. As if we had some sort of deep and meaningful connection. It was weird how we had only had one real conversation, yet I felt like we had been long time friends.
"Oh, um, totally unrelated, but I saw you signed up for track again." I continued small talk.
"Yeah. You should sign up!" He said a bit too enthusiastically. "If you want to."
"I guess I could try this year." What did I just get myself in to?
"Good thing they don't have any catching events." He said with a grin.
"Why is that?" I was genuinely confused.
"Because the other competitors would be toast against you. The way you caught that football." He laughed, as did I.
I wanted to hug him, right then in there, and tell him how I felt. I had a plan though. Just, be, me.
