"What time is it?" I asked. I couldn't sleep at all the night before. Liz had managed to snore all night long. "It's ten" she replied. I groaned, Jacob would be back around 11. "Check Kik" Liz whispered. Three new messages. All from Brian. "Hey" was the first message. "What's up?" Read the second. "I have an idea" was the third message. I replied quickly, apologizing and explaining I was sleeping. "It's cool, want to here my idea?" He messaged me back right away. I replied with "sure." "Alright, so why don't you send me a picture of you, and I'll send you a picture of me?" I didn't know how reply. I showed Liz the message. "Pick your best picture on your phone," She suggested. "Why, I don't need to look good, I don't even know him!" I replied. Soon enough, the screen flashed. A typical message I expected to get. A gym selfie, with weights in his hand. Liz and I laughed and laughed. I chose a recent picture of me, the one taken at Disneyland. I was far away in the picture, and I had had a stupid look on my face. "Woah, you're a cutie!" He messaged back. A knot formed in my stomach. Liz laughed and typed for me, "Thanks!" I was worried now, Mom's words came back to me, "You never know who's behind the screen." Liz typed and typed, pretending to be me. "I gotta go to sleep soon" I saw Liz write. "Hey, it's only 11 in Florida right now, isn't it?" Brian messaged. A jolt surged through my body. Florida? How did he know we were in Florida? I quickly typed, "What about Florida?" He typed back, "I love Florida." I left it alone and logged off, not before I saw his message telling me to send him a message when I could. The next few days passed as boring as usual. I found myself being bored, and going to do schoolwork, forgetting that I already graduated. A few days later, I logged onto my Kik (Liz wanted me to, she was sitting right next to me.) "Hey" Brian texted. I replied with a single hi. Today, he wanted more pictures of me. I sent him a picture of me where my hair was covering my face. All you could see was my eyes. "He can't even see you in that picture," Liz commented. "That's the point, I don't want him seeing my face. You know, you started this because I never wanted to log on this stupid website," I snapped. "What's your problem?" Liz asked. "Nothing, I just am a bit creeped out," I replied. Liz asked why and I explained how he mentioned Florida a few days ago. Liz laughed. "Why is this funny?" I asked, annoyed. She shrugged her shoulders and watched as Brian messaged me back. This time, the photo of him was different. He was shirtless in this picture, a mirror selfie. Liz laughed and teased me more. "Screenshot this one!" She cried, pointing to the screen. "No!" I cried, "I don't want these pictures, I don't know him!" Liz smiled and replied, "Hey at least you're getting a guy after you, I'm a loner." I forced myself to smile, hiding my emotions inside.
The days passed, and as I went looking for jobs, I couldn't help but wonder if I had already gotten myself into an issue. I remembered Mom telling me from when I was younger, "Whatever happens stays on your back." She would tell my older sister this whenever she did anything. Her words came back to me as I thought of the pictures Brian had been sending me. I worried if I was making a huge mistake.
"3 new messages" read my screen. As much as I wanted to stop talking to Brian, I didn't want to just leave him straight away, I felt concerned both ways. I read the messages one by one. The first one said, "Hey good morning" the second one read, "You around?" The third one read, "Hey babe, where's my beautiful girl?" A jolt went down my back. My beautiful girl? Why was he calling me this? I was really getting creeped out now. I considered telling Mom and Dad about Brian, but I knew they'd be mad that I had already disobeyed by chatting with a stranger. "Mom" I called from up stairs. "Hey?" She called back. I imagined saying, "Mom, Liz convinced me into getting a Kik account, and now some weird guy is chatting and sending me weird pictures," but I knew Mom would ask why I talked back with him. I decided not to mention anything, saying, "Nevermind."
