3. The train ride

It was September the 1st, and Alex was running late, as always. She started waving her wand, and all her clothes were packed. "All set!" she announced.

"Did you get everything?" Justin asked frantically, his right eye twitching.

Alex sarcastically answered, "Yes Justin, because only an idiot would go overseas without bringing his or her toothbrush."

She stormed out of her room and came back a few minutes later, shoving a plastic bag into her trunk.

Justin smugly asked, "And what was that?"

She looked at him, narrowing her eyes, and said, "That was different, you doof. It was my toothpaste." Then she said a hasty goodbye to her family moments later when they were gathered in her room, tearing anyway from her frantic mother, and flashed to platform 9¾.

There, she ran into twins with red hair and freckles. They asked her with wide eyes, "How did you do that? That was bloody brilliant! But, you can't apparate till you're seventeen! You look like a first year!"

Alex asked, confused, "What's apparat…apparate…? And by the way my name is Alex, and I'm from New York. What are your names?" The twins looked at each other with a devious smirk, and Alex laughed out loud. "What?" they asked, confused about why she was laughing.

She gasped while laughing, "That's the same face I used when I glued all my stuck-up rules-abiding brother's clothes together for a week!" The twins looked at each other and smiled. One said to other, "Well George, I do believe we have a prankster on our hands!" The other replied, "Shall we take her under our wing, Fred?"

"Nah, partners should be more suited, you think?"

"How about 'ideas & inspiration' person? You know what? Partners sound good."

Alex laughed. "If this involves pranks that get people wet, stinky, sticky or mad, I'm in." At that, she hi-fived the twins and left, waving goodbye to Fred and George to go look for her friend Harry. As she walked past a pillar, someone ran into her out of nowhere.

"Ouch!" Alex and another girl exclaimed in unison.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!" Alex said in annoyance.

"I'm so sorry!" The bushy haired girl cried.

At that moment, someone caught Alex's eye. Oh! It was Harry! She hurried towards Harry, ignoring the apologizing girl. She waved to Harry, and called out to him. He turned around and smiled slightly, waving back. Finally, she caught up to him and they walked towards the train, talking. They found a compartment somewhere at the back of the train and sat together, chatting about the people they met earlier. Turns out, he had also met the twins.

Just then, they heard a knock on the door, and both of them looked up. A boy with red hair and freckles that looked a bit like the twins she met asked, "Everywhere else is full, so can I sit here?" Harry nodded his head and the boy sat down next to Alex, awkwardly waving at her. He glanced at Harry and then looked quickly out of the window, pretending he hadn't looked. "Hey, Ron," The twins came back. "Listen, we're going down the middle of the train - Lee Jordan's got a giant tarantula down there."

"Right," mumbled Ron.

"Harry," said the other twin, "did we introduce ourselves? Fred and George Weasley. And this is Ron, our brother. Wait a minute - Alex? So, our prank partner in crime, wanna plan our first prank? It'll be a 'welcome back to school' prank!"

Alex gave them a devious smirk, and said, "I have a few ideas, but I'll talk to you guys later. Bye!" Seemingly slightly disappointed, they left.

"Bye," said Harry and Ron. The twins slid the compartment door shut behind them.

"Are you really Harry Potter?" Ron blurted out. Harry nodded. "Oh - well, I thought it might be one of Fred and George's jokes," said Ron. "And have you really got -you know... "He pointed at Harry's forehead. Harry pulled back his bangs to show the lightning scar. Ron stared. "So that's where You-Know-Who-"

"Yes," said Harry, "but I can't remember it."

"Nothing?" said Ron eagerly.

"Well - I remember a lot of green light, but nothing else."

"Wow," said Ron. He sat and stared at Harry for a few moments, then, as though he had suddenly realized what he was doing, he looked quickly out of the window again. "Are all your family wizards?" asked Harry, who found Ron just as interesting as Ron found him.

"Er - yes, I think so," said Ron. "I think Mom's got a second cousin who's an accountant, but we never talk about him." "So you must know loads of magic already." The Weasleys were clearly one of those old wizarding families the pale boy in Diagon Alley, Draco, had talked about. "I heard you went to live with Muggles," said Ron. "What are they like?"

"Horrible - well, not all of them. My aunt and uncle and cousin are, though. Wish I'd had three wizard brothers."

"Five," said Ron. For some reason, he was looking gloomy.

And that was when Alex finally cut in, indignant at being left out of their conversation, "Wait, you have five siblings? Oh my gosh, I have three, and I already hate my life! Oh, do you have one of those siblings who's like, a stickler for rules? Everyone has one of those, unfortunately including me."

"Yes! His name is Percy, and he's a prefect this year. He's the main target of Fred and George's pranks."

Alex laughed and cried out, "No way! I prank my brother all the time too! The other day, I pushed him into the washing machine, and glued the door shut! 'Course, I made sure he didn't have a wand with him at the time so he couldn't come out."

Ron and Harry started to crack up, and Alex started telling them about Max, but the bushy haired girl from before came into the compartment and asked, "Has anyone seen a toad? Neville's lost one." Then, she looked around the compartment and saw Alex. Her eyes widened in recognition, and so did Alex's. She looked at Alex pointedly, and said, "You know, it's rude to leave when someone is apologizing." and left. Then, she came back and told Ron, "You've got dirt on your nose, did you know?" Ron quickly wiped off the dirt from his nose, muttering something under his breath.

"Whatever house I'm in, I hope she's not in it." said Ron.

Alex snorted, and hi fived him. She brightened up considerably and they started talking about random things, until Ron stopped them when he asked what houses they wanted to go to. "What houses?" Alex and Harry simultaneously asked. Ron started to explain the houses, where Gryffindor was for the brave, Slytherin was for the sly and cunning, Hufflepuff was for the loyal, and lastly Ravenclaw was for the studious.

Curiously, Harry asked, "What house are your brothers in?"

"Gryffindor," said Ron. He seemed to be getting depressed again. "Mom and Dad were in it, too. I don't know what they'll say if I'm not. I don't suppose Ravenclaw would be too bad, but imagine if they put me in Slytherin. "

"That's the house Vol-, I mean, You-Know-Who was in?"

"Yeah," said Ron.

"Who?" asked Alex.

Ron straightened up, wide eyed, and exclaimed, "Bloody hell, woman! You don't know who He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is?"

She narrowed her eyes at Ron and threatened, "If you're trying to suggest that I'm stupid, keep in mind this is the girl who can take you to Mars right now and bring you back. I know American magic, and yes, I can do that." Ron gulped, looking terrified, and just nodded, seemingly incapable of speaking. Harry just looked at her in awe and a hint of fear.

Before she could ask who that unknown and seemingly scary person was, the train stopped, and Ron was panicking. "I haven't changed into my robes yet! He scrambled for his robes, and Alex rolled her eyes before casting a spell, and they all flashed into their robes. Bewildered, Ron spluttered out, "How – what – why – underage - nonverbal!" Harry looked like he was going to burst from not laughing, and Alex shrugged.

"American magic," was all she said.

Ron looked at her enviously, Harry curiously, and she skipped off the train, seemingly unbothered by their stares. She stepped out, inhaling and glad to be out of the train. Although she'd never admit it to anyone, especially Justin, she was looking forward to school...
