Dating the star quarterback wasn't everything it was cracked up to be. Everyday was just as routine as the next as well as the one before. Over two months of the same pattern. The same procedure, drill, regimen. The same damn sequence every single day.
"I don't understand. How can dating Luke Hemmings be so boring?" Addy asked me as she sat down on my bed, flipping through a magazine.
"Because he only wants to be friends. he doesn't act as if we're dating unless we're around people. He tells me I'm a good friend when I want to be more than that. I actually like him, Addy." I sighed, knowing that Luke will never like me anymore than a friend.
"So how are things with Rory?" Calum asked as we warmed up for practice.
"It's great, man. She's a really good friend and treats me like an actual person." I explained, smiling to myself.
"You like her?"
"Not like that"
"Have you hit that?" He threw his head back laughing as my face twisted in disgust.
"You're gross, dude. I don't think of her that way." I scoffed as he began to laugh again.
"Audrey's having a party tonight, you going?" He asked once he contained his laughter.
"I can ask Rory. She'll probably say no though since she kinda hates Audrey." I said before grabbing my phone and sending her a text.
Party tonight at Audrey's. You in?
I read the text and immediately felt my stomach drop. I didn't want to go to Audreys but at the same time I wanted to spend time with Luke and didn't want to seem rude.
Awesome. Pick you up at 8 ;)
Luke pulled into my driveway and rolled down his window.
"Sorry I'm late, it took a bit of convincing for my parents to let me go to the party" He chuckled as I went around the car to the front seat.
"It's okay" I bluntly said, playing with my hands.
"Are you alright?" He asked as we sat in my driveway.
"Uh yeah, fine" I reassured him, flashing a fake smile. He shrugged before pulling out onto the road. I was terrified for the night ahead. Worse case scenario, I would get drunk, Audrey and her minions would try to sabotage me in every way, shape, and form possible, and Luke would leave me alone with a bunch of people I'm uncomfortable around.
"We're here" Luke intrreupted my thoughts as we pulled up to Audreys mansion.
"What the hell?" I exclaimed, remaining seated in the car.
"I know right" Luke replied, unbuckling his seatbelt. "You coming?" I sat there with a blank expression on my face. I slowly shook my head as my stomach dropped. There were so many people from school and people I didnt even recognize. I slowly shook my head as my eyes widened. "Rory, dont be nervous. I'll stay by your side the whole time. Promise"
"Ok, sorry" I mumbled before unbuckling my seatbelt and getting out of the car. Luke grabbed my hand and squeezed it, reassuring me. I smiled to myself as we walked into Audreys house. People blurred past me, drinks in their hands. Others danced against each other with no space in between them. I looked up to Luke who smiled at me before letting go of my clammy hand. He leaned down to give me a kiss but I turned away, pretending I didnt realize what he was doing. He stood up straight, a look of hurt on his face.
"Im sorry, I-I dont feel well" I lied. He nodded and gave me a half smile. An awkward silence came over us, as if the talking and blaring music was just background noise.
After Luke and I grabbed a beer, I could see Audrey, Taylor, and Kasey walking towards us. I started panicking as Audrey flashed me a fake smile. My hands were sweating worse than before.
"Luke, Aurora. So happy to see you guys here tonight" Audrey lied through her perfect, white teeth.
"You too, Audrey" Luke winked at her. I shouldnt have felt jealous but I couldnt help it. Audrey blushed and bit her lip as she looked up to Luke. I clenched my fists and looked down to the floor.
"Come with us, Aurora" Kasey blurted out, interrupting my thoughts. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me away, Taylor following. I looked back to Luke, panic written on my face. He mouthed 'Im sorry' before Audrey pulled him away.
"What the hell do you guys think youre doing?" I asked, loosening Kaseys grip on me.
"Oh, Aurora. Youre in denial. We know youre not dating Luke, everyone knows that. Audrey has always wanted Luke, and now that he seems 'unavailable' she wants him even more. And what Audrey wants, Audrey gets. Your little game with Luke ends tonight and on Monday, Luke and Audrey will be the talk of the school. Got it?" She crossed her arms. Everything was happening so fast and I couldnt comprehend it. I felt like I was going to throw up. I felt angry. I felt sad. I felt betrayed. I felt alone.
"Got it?" Taylor repeated louder, waving her hand in front of my face. I gulped loudly before slowly nodding. They both smiled and high fived before walking away. I looked around, no on noticing what just happened. I finished my beer and walked around the house, trying to find the exit.
"Rory!" I heard someone yell from behind me. I turned around to see someone in the grade below me.
"Hi" I said as more of a question than a statement.
"Im really sorry" She said, putting her hand on my shoulder.
"About what?" I asked, drawing my words out in confusion. Her eyes widened
"You havent heard? Luke and Audrey are upstairs...you know" She awkwardly said, looking away. I felt tears prick at my eyes. "Im sorry, again" She stuttered before walking away. Tears streamed down my face as I pushed through the crowd of people, finally finding a door. I walked outside into what I assumed was Audreys backyard. A few people looked at me because of the sound of the door and the fact that makeup was running down my face. I attempted to find my way to the front of the house, gaining more attention than I wanted.
"Rory?" I heard a guy say before he tapped my shoulder. I didnt turn around, I didnt want to face anyone. "Hey, are you ok?" He asked. I turned around that time to be met by Michael Clifford. He went to our schools rivalry school and was on the football team. Therefore, him and Luke werent necessarily fond of each other.
"Im fine." I bullshitted. He half smiled and walked closer to me.
"People who are fine dont frantically run around parties, crying" He smirked.
"Youre just making me sound like a crazy person now" I laughed and tried to wipe the mascara off my face. He laughed along with me. "Youre right though. Im not ok. My boyfriend is upstairs banging Audrey Smith." I shook my head at the thought of calling him my boyfriend but I wasnt about to tell a guy I just met that we werent actually dating.
"Shit. That really blows"
"Tell me about it"
"Im sorry" He said with more sincerity in his voice.
"Its ok, I'll get over it" He nodded and put his hands in his pockets. "I better get going though, it was good seeing you" I smiled before beginning to walk away.
"Wait, Rory?" I turned around and looked up to him. "Can I maybe, uh, give you my number?" He asked, scratching the back of his neck. I grinned and nodded before we exchanged numbers.
"I'll text you" I smirked before walking off.
