Jim poured them all coffee then pushed his plate away; he unlike Rob ate very little which accounted for his athletic frame. Rob wasn’t at all fat; he was just more muscular with hours in the gym pumping iron. He could bench press over 300 pounds and was as strong as a bull. Rob was a county rugby player who actually liked to get into a physical fight with someone.’

Jim represented the Royal Navy in the light heavyweight boxing team and won the inter services title in 1944. He carried a punch in either hand and there was talk of him actually turning professional. The rest of his team were conversant in unarmed and armed combat after the intensive forty six week course they all had completed.

When they took off from Shannon airfield Rob asked what direction Jim wanted him to go head north about forty miles out then get as low as you can so paddy can take the photos. “Aye, Aye skipper said Rob as he banked the plane to the left.’

“Try and get lower so we can take some shots going out there as well as coming back’

As the aircraft got lower the girls looked out of the window below to see if they could spot anything with the naked eye. They could clearly see rock formations which were about one hundred feet below but no wrecks. They followed a grid pattern which was marked off on the map as photos were taken. They spent nearly four hours in the air going back and forth along the coast and found very little for their efforts.

“Why don’t we go further out suggested Selene?

“Do you really think that the wrecks could be that far away from where they first went down?’

“Okay Rob lets go another twenty miles out they zig zagged a pattern all the way then Selene spotted something.

“Go around there again Rob said Jim.

Look on the right there is something down there.

“Paddy are you taking photos?

“Aye skipper.’

“Four miles further there were more signs of wreckage.’

“I think we found it lads. This could be it.’

They marked the map where they had seen both wreckage sights.’

Tonight when the lads get in we will have a meeting in O’Donoghues to discuss this in detail. Paddy can you get those photos developed for me as soon as you can please.’

“Yes skipper I am on it.’

Ok let’s just check another twenty miles out as I have a hunch that the main wreckage site is out there. There is some debris down there; there has got to be more of it further out.

Rob told them that they were running low on fuel.’

“Have we enough to get us over the site and back?’

“Possibly but it’s going to be tight skipper.’ It’s worth the risk come on let’s do it.’

Rob got them down to sixty feet and they got some great shots of the sea bottom

There was a rocky outcrop and a deep gully that Jim noticed; he made a note of it on the map.

Okay chaps I think we had better head back or we will be swimming home said Rob anxiously.’

“He turned the Miles light aircraft around and headed towards Shannon.’

The fuel tank was reading zero and Rob could not gain any height they were still twenty miles from the coast and flying on the thermals.
