The sun was setting. The night was just right. After the dinner and the yacht, everything was set in motion for the proposal. Seeing Louis down on one knee, it was like one of my dreams finally coming true. He had done so much for me. Even when I thought that I was giving up on us, he didn’t.
He wanted to fight to be with me, even after I had moved and had gone to New York. I’m sure he had tried everything to have me in this position before him. I nodded, “Yes, I’ll marry you.” Louis smiled. He stood and placed the ring on my left ring finger. I wrapped my arms around his neck and pressed my lips against his.
His arms went around my body as he pulled me close. I pulled away and looked into his eyes. I couldn’t have imagined myself being with anyone else. Louis and I spent our night in the yacht. The next morning I would make the call to my parents about passing by their house for lunch, which they agreed.
Louis had driven over to the house. “Have breakfast with me.” I suggested. It was Sunday. I’m sure he had no reason to head back to Eleanor's any time soon. Though, I had a feeling that he was going to call and tell her the truth. I could see the look in his eyes that he couldn’t hold himself back from saying yes, but he said that he had to go and talk to Eleanor.
He said that he’ll drop by and pick me up to drive us over to my parents’ house for lunch. “After lunch, we could browse for wedding rings.” I nodded and looked down. Louis reached out and lifted my chin to look at him. He caressed my cheek softly with his thumb.
“Once I get everything sorted out with Eleanor, I can finally have you with no strings attached.”
“Why is she important to you?”
“She’s been there for me through rough times, like Harry has been there for you. I’m sure you didn’t spend time in New York alone.”
“You’re not jealous by the fact that Harry and I were together, or that I spent the holidays with his family?”
Louis shook his head and said, “I’m not a teenager that has fallen helplessly for a girl who never wanted him. I trust you enough to make your own decisions for yourself. I know you only have eyes for me.”
“You’re willing to be a one-woman man this time?” Louis nodded and leaned in to kiss my lips. He pulled away only to tell me that there hasn’t been a single girl that made his heart beat as it did when he first laid eyes on me. At that exact moment, my mind had instantly gone to Jade. I wondered if she was his first love.
I wanted to bring her name up, but I didn’t want to ruin the moment. Though, I too had a first love before Louis. I never bothered to bring up his name because there wasn’t a conversation I had with my friends about first loves. I got out of the car and headed inside.
I walked down the hallway to the bedroom and almost screamed at the sight of the silhouetted figure that stood before me. “Sorry if I frightened you.” It was Niall. I was about to ask him how he got in, but he said he came by last night to apologize to me for not showing up. He knew about the extra key that I had hidden. “You slept in my bed?” I asked him.
“No, I slept in the guest room but I used your shower.” he smirked. I rolled my eyes and reminded myself that I had to take a shower. “Was there a party you went to without me?” I looked down at my dress. I told him that I had gone out on a date with Ian last night.
He nodded, but then I noticed that his eyebrows furrowed together. He was looking in the direction of my left hand. I had almost forgotten about the engagement ring. He questioned me about it. I was in no position to lie to him. I told him that Louis proposed to me last night and I said yes. “Congrats. I should leave you be.”
“Have breakfast with me?” Niall was headed towards the door. He stopped and turned to face me. I had this hopeful look in my eyes. It had been so long since Niall and I have spoken or seen each other. I know that he was still with Jade. I have known Niall longer than she. He was my best friend; and one of the few people I can open up to without any hesitation.
“I’ll cook while you shower.” He suggested with a smile. I nodded, elated that I wasn’t going to have breakfast in this house alone. I took out a set of clean clothes and underwear before heading into the bathroom. I took my shower.
When I emerged into the kitchen with clean clothes, Niall was making us omelettes. I started on brewing us coffee. I sat on the counter and watched Niall as he cooked. “How are you and Jade?” It had been a while since we talked about her. The last we spoke about her was at Harry's party.
“Yeah, the hesitation in your voice really gives away how you truly feel.” Niall sighed as he turned off the stove. He had already finished one omelette and was setting the second one on another plate. He suggested we talk about it over coffee and omelettes. I agreed with him.
When the coffee was brewed, I poured each of us a cup. He took the plates out to the counter. I sat down on the barstool and slid over the cup to him. He thanked me and took a sip. I started to eat my omelette. “Jade's a sweet girl, but I think she’s interested in someone else.” he said.
“Harry. I think… I know she has a crush on him. She thinks that I don’t see the way they act around each other, but I notice.”
“Is that why you didn’t come over? I wanted to see you.”
“I wanted to see you too, but I didn’t want to be there if Jade and Harry are going to be in the same room. Guess Soph and Liam kept it from you. Sophia had suggested for me to tell you myself instead of you finding out through one of them.” I could tell that Niall was hurting inside. I reached out and touched his arm.
I assured him that everything will work out and that he would have to be patient. He then switched the subject over to talking about my engagement with Louis. I knew he was trying to be happy for me, but I could see the truth in his eyes. Niall could never hide his feelings very well. “Are you going to work for Louis again?” asked he.
I have thought about working for Louis. As great as it sounded to have my old job back, I couldn’t imagine working in the same environment as him. I mean when we get married, it would be much harder for me to keep my hands off of him. “What if I work for you again?” I suggested.
“I don’t think Louis would like that.”
“Louis doesn’t have a hold over me Niall. I can choose who I want to work for.”
“I want to work for you.” I looked into his blue eyes. He leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. I didn’t hesitate to kiss him back. He pulled away and stood up. He paced back and forth, shaking his head. It was as if he was regretting the kiss. I stood up to stop him. “Niall,” I paused. He stopped and looked at me.
“Aly, you love him. You love Louis.”
I looked down and said, “I think I don’t know who I love more.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I think you should go.” I walked over to the front door and opened it. Niall gave me a confused look, but I pushed him out the door and told him to go. I slammed the door and locked it before he could ask me what was going on. I leaned against the door and let out a sigh. Though as I slid down to the floor, I found myself crying.
A part of me wanted Louis and a part of me wanted Niall, but there was a part of me that wanted Harry. Niall was an old friend of mine, who I deeply cared about in more ways than others. But Harry, he gave me a reason to believe in love again. He gave me a reason to hope that everything was going to be okay.
Was it okay to love somebody because they could give you everything you wanted just by paying for it? Louis bought me a house on the beach, a car, and a yacht. Louis could take me anywhere in the world, but sometimes I wonder if I was in love with him because he could do all that. If I stripped away the money, would I still love Louis? After all, I didn’t know Louis before he became rich. What if this money made him a different person?
I spent my time thinking about it until Ian had to pick me up for lunch. I had gotten dressed and put on makeup to hide the fact that I was crying. Though I had a feeling that Louis would see through it. My parents would know. The drive to my parents’ house was silent. Louis knew something was on my mind, but I wasn’t in the mood to talk about it.
He probably was thinking that I was contemplating about whether or not I should marry him. He could be right. Lunch with my parents went by smoothly, but when it came time for dessert, mom pulled me aside to ask me what was wrong.
Louis and dad were outside in the backyard discussing something I hadn’t bothered to pay attention to. I told mom about what I was feeling. I told her that I wasn’t sure on whether or not that I feel right about the engagement. “I saw Niall earlier today; and he made me re-think my decision about marrying Louis.”
“Only you can make that decision. Your dad and I are going to support you on whatever that decision may be.”
“Don’t tell anyone else about this.” Mom promised. It wasn’t her business to tell anyone about my decision anyway. After lunch, I grabbed my car keys. My car was out on the driveway of my parents’ house. It’s good knowing that my parents have maintained my car all this time.
Louis' phone rang. He took it out to answer it just as I was saying goodbye to my parents. Before I got into my car, Louis told me that he had to drive to the company for an urgent meeting. I nodded and told him to drive safe. He got in his car and drove away. I got in my car and drove to see a friend. I drove to see Harry.
