Today was the day that the Ramirez family got the new addition to their family. They said his name was Harlan McKeever and they even had a picture of him. He was pretty hot.
We were helping Emma set up a welcome party. She only invited the neighbors, which were some other kids from school. The 2 girls that lived by us were judgemental preppys.
There was only one nice guy out of 5 of them and he was really shy. The other guys were jocks. Let's just say I was definitely looking forward to meeting Harlan. The whole house was covered in balloons which I blew up and hit everybody with. There was also a banner that said 'Welcome home Harlan!'
The neighbors brought over food. It all looked so good. I had to force myself to not eat all of it. Emma would kill me. "Ok, everybody!" Emma yelled. "Harlan should be here any minute." She continued.
I was done an hour ago. I have literally just been sitting on the couch playing subway surfers on my phone. Subway surfers is way too addictive. A knock sounded on the door and Emma ran to it like an excited Chihuahua.
She opened the door and everyone yelled, "Welcome Home!"
Harlan raised his eyebrows and looked at a woman behind him. "Is she serious?" He looks at Emma. "Are you serious?"
I snickered but stopped when I realized that he was being kind of rude no matter how ridiculous this was. Emma's face dropped. "What do you mean?"
The woman behind Harlan hit him and said, "Be nice. Mrs. Ramirez has gone through so much to welcome you to her home. I have not taught you everything to have you be rude to women."
He had the decency to look guilty and said, "Sorry. Thanks for all of this." He motioned his hands around the room.
"Now that we got that all cover up... Can we eat the food now?" I asked bored.
Emma gasped and I winced. Here we go. "Skylynn Rae Marello! This boy just got here and all you can think about is eating?" I held my hands up in a surrender motion and she calmed down a little bit.
Harlan grinned. "Food sounds amazing. I haven't eaten for a couple of hours." The woman behind him snorted.
I frowned. "Who are you?" I asked tilting my head to the side.
"Oh, I'm sorry. How rude of me, I haven't told any of you my name. I'm Madylynn Fleur. I'm Harlan's social worker." She raised her hand and Emma shook it.
"Ok, now that we have that out of the way you can eat Harlan. But don't take all of it." She said pointedly.
Harlan grinned at her and said, "Aye, aye captain." He saluted her and walked to the table full of food. My mouth was watering up. I was really hungry. I followed him. He grabbed a plate and completely ignored me. I rolled my eyes and just decided to ignore him.
Half of the bowl was gone by the time he was done grabbing some of it. "I thought Madylynn told you not to take all of the food." I accused.
He rolled his eyes and sighed.. "I didn't take all of it." He pointed at the half empty bowl.
I glared and then stopped. "Touche."
Someone came up behind us and slapped Harlan on the back of the head. I grinned. It was Madylynn. "I told you not to take all of the food."
He sighed and said, "I just had this conversation. I didn't take all of the food. There is still half of it left."
Madylynn glared at him. "Just finish up getting your food." She grumbled. I could tell she was trying to restrain herself from hitting him again. She was officially my new favorite person. I snickered and Harlan glared at me.
"What?" He snapped.
I chuckled. "Nothing, snappy pants."
"Snappy pants? Really?" He rolled his eyes and went back to ignoring me. I grabbed the pulled pork while Harlan filled his plate with the mac and cheese.
I glared at him. "Put the spoon down!" I said loudly.
He smirked at me and leaned forward. "And if I don't? What will you do?"
I reached for the spoon and grabbed it put he wouldn't let go. We had a tug war until he let go and my hand moved to the side knocking the bowl off of the table and all over him. My eyes widened in shock and I gasped. Harlan looked so mad that you could practically see the steam coming out of his ears.
"What the fuck?" He growled. I gulped and stepped back. "You stupid bitch. Are you always this annoying or do you just enjoy doing stupid things?"
"Harlan!" Madylynn yelled. She grabbed his arm and pulled him away from the food. "I know you are mad but that is know way to talk to a lady."
I just stood there shocked. Everyone was shocked. Kelsey (The queen bitch) was staring at Harlan like he was crazy. She turned to her groupies and said,"Come on let's go. This guy is a waste of our time." They nodded and followed her. The only one that stayed was the shy guy, Evan. I looked over at Harlan and noticed that he had a dark look on his face.
"Are you alright?" I asked.
"I'm fine." He stood up quickly. I frowned. Why was he so upset about them saying that? She was just being a bitch.
"Harlan I am so sor..." Emma started to say but Harlan put his hand up.
"It's fine I'm used to people being like that." He said, his voice hard. "Can you just show me my room? I'm tired."
Madylynn was about to say something but was interrupted by Emma. "Well of course sweetie. Your welcome to stay as well." She said to Emma.
"I'll think about it." Madylynn replied. Emma nodded and walked over to the stairs. She motioned for Harlan to follow her. He picked up his duffle bag and followed her up the stairs. "Sorry about him blowing up on you. He's just stressed out from today. I'll have a talk with him.",Madylynn reassured me.
I raised my eyebrows but stopped after a couple of seconds. "Ok."
"Well I have to go. My dad will be mad that I have been gone for so long." Evan said worried.
I frowned and said, "Ok thanks for coming Evan." I smiled at him and he blushed. He waved and left closing the door softly behind him. I heard Emma come down the stairs and then a shower start from upstairs.
"Evan left?" She asked disappointed.
I nodded. "He had to get home."
Emma sighed and sat on the couch. She put her head in her hands. "I didn't mean to upset him. I wanted his first day here to be amazing."
I felt really bad. "It's not your fault." I said.
"She's right. It's not your fault. You seem like a very nice person and he needs someone like you in his life. He has been through a lot."
"Like what?" I asked before I could stop myself.
"It's not my business to tell. He will tell you when he trusts you." She said.
I nodded. "Ok." It will definitely be tough trying to be his friend, especially when he gets mad at smalls things and blows up. But I at least have to give him a second chance.
