Kate woke up from the same nightmare she gets every night. She looked at her watch (which she put on the nightstand) and it read six twenty three. She got up and pulled out the clothes that she would need: a white button-downed shirt, a thick-striped red and gold tie, a grey v-neck jumper, a black skirt that went down to her knees, grey socks, and an open black buttoned robe with the Gryffindor crest on it. Kate carefully got dressed and ready. She then went dog and ran over down to the common room.
She turned human and looked around, no one in sight. She went dog again and ran toward the great hall. There were only four other people in the Great Hall. There was a girl at the Ravenclaw table that was eating while reading a book, Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Flitwick. Kate turned back and rolled over to the Ravenclaw table. She said, "Hi! My name is Kate Smithson. I personally like the book that you're reading!"
The girl was wearing Ravenclaw robes and had a necklace with a K on it. Her straight hair was a darker brown that reached only an inch or two past her shoulders. Her eyes was a dazzling hazel and her skin was pale. The book she was reading was called Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She looked up and said, "Oh hi! I'm Karley Schieffer. I do like magical animals." They ate and talked together. Kate found out that Karley was a half-blood and she had read up on everything like Kate. By about eight o'clock, Kate said good bye and went over to the Gryffindor table where the twins and Angelina were sitting.
Angelina said, "Where were you Kate? I woke up at seven and you were gone!"
Kate said, "I came down here around quarter to seven and made a friend. Her name is Karley."
Angelina said, "I've heard of her. She was in St. Mungo's for something last year. It was in the paper."
Kate was about to say something when McGonagall came around with timetables. She passed them around and Kate looked at hers:

Kate quickly memorized her schedule and said, "I'm gonna go get my stuff. We have double Potions first."
Angelina jumped up and said, "I'll come too." Kate went dog and ran up the stairs, Angelina following close behind. When they got into the girl's dormitory, Kate turned human, pulling out her endless/weightless bag and her backpack from the top drawer. Angelina had a red backpack and Kate had a gold one with a fancy K on the front.
Kate put her cauldron, crystal phials, brass scales, potion ingredient, The Standard Book of Spells (Gr. 1), Magical Theory, A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration, Magical Drafts and Potions, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, parchment, and a quill. She stuck her wand in her pocket and said to Angelina, "I got my stuff ready. How 'bout you?" as she put her bag in her backpack.
Angelina said, "Got it. Potions starts in half an hour. We better go try to find our way down." They left, and after twenty minutes of roaming the halls, they finally got to the dungeons. Kate memorized the quickest way down and followed Angelina in.
Kate made a stool in the back disappear and rolled to the empty space. There were four seats at the desk. Angelina sat beside her, and they took out their potions supplies and talked as the other Gryffindors and Slytherins came in. Dylan passed her and knocked over her jar of beetle eyes and said, "Oops. Didn't see ya there, runt."
Kate just said, "Crabbe." She scooped up the beetle eyes.
Crabbe whispered, "Runt." She walked away to the front of the room. Fred and George had come in and sat down in the last two seats; Fred on one side of Kate and George on the other side of Angelina. They looked as if they raced to sit by her.
Kate rolled her eyes and the door burst open. Professor Snape rushed in and stood at the front of the room. In a monotone voice he whispered, "My name is Professor Snape. I am the Potions Master. You will address me as 'professor' or 'sir'. Hopefully you aren't like the usual dunderheads I have to teach. I can teach you to brew fame, bottle glory, even stopper death. But you are about to learn science and art of potion-making. As there is little foolish wand waving in here, you will hardly think of this magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through the human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses.
"Ah, Smithson. Our new celebrity. What do you get if add Powdered Root of Asphodel to an infusion of Wormwood?"
Kate searched her memory and found the answer. She cleared her throat and said, "You would get a sleeping potion so powerful that it's called the Draught of Living Death, sir."
If Snape was surprised, he didn't show it. As if she didn't just give him the right answer, he hissed, "Where would you look if I told you to find a Bezoar?"
Kate said, "A Bezoar can save you from most potions, and it is taken from the stomach of a goat, sir."
Snape looked enraged. He almost shouted, "What is the difference between Monkshood and Wolfsbane?"
Kate smugly whispered, "They are the same plant, which also goes by the name of Aconite, sir."
Snape, looking more enraged than ever, said, "Five points from Gryffindor. For you being an insufferable know-it-all."
They went on with the lesson, and by the end of class, they had their first grades back. Snape begrudgingly had to give Kate an O (outstanding) for her Cure of Boils. Fred and George had both gotten Ts (troll) for their potions, as Angelina had gotten an E (exceeds expectations). Crabbe had gotten a P (poor). Kate laughed at that.
After Potions ended at noon, it was time for lunch. After lunch at one o'clock, Kate and Angelina went with the twins, Lee, Alicia Spinnet, and Kennedy Zimbermann. They went and got the closest seats to the front. As there were two seats to a desk, the boys tried again to get to the seat my Kate, but Angelina had already taken it. Fred, George, and Lee looked glum, and Kate's hair turned pink with embarrassment.
Professor McGonagall came in and said, "Good afternoon, students. You are about to start one of the most difficult classes that you will be in for the rest of your Hogwarts career. Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic that you will learn at Hogwarts. Anyone messing around in my class will leave and not come back. You have been warned."
Everyone looked scared except Kate, who looked eager. McGonagall flicked her wand and her desk turned into a pig. People oohed and ahhed. She passed out some matches and almost had to take the twin's away (they were trying to light them). She said, "Go to page one in A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration. You will be turning this match into a needle."
At the end of the class, only Kate's match was an actual needle. Angelina's needle could light when rubbed against a matchbox. Everybody but Kate got homework, so the girls packed all of their stuff away and started toward the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, closely followed by the boys. They got to the classroom right before it started. There was an older woman with white hair sitting at the front of the room.
When everyone was seated, she said, "Hello class. My name is Professor DeFance. Let's take attendance. Fred Weasley?"
The list went on and went back and forth between Ravenclaws and Gryffindors until they were done. DeFance said, "Today we'll be learning about Doxies today." When class finally got over, they had to write a seven-inch roll of parchment about Doxies for homework.
The girls left for supper at six, the boys behind them fighting. Kate rolled around and shouted, "What in the name of Merlin are you three bickering about?!"
They all stopped, looking innocent. George said, "Do you really want to know?"
Kate nodded curtly and Lee said, "You don't want to know."
Kate stiffly said, "Yes, I do!"
Fred sighed and whispered, "We're fighting about you." Kate's eyes went wide and her hair turned gray (sad). Fred stammered, "No! We didn't mean it like that!" Kate's eyes filled with tears; she went dog and ran.
From behind her she heard, "Now look what you've done, boys. You just hurt Kate's Hufflepuff. Yea, I said Hufflepuff! She told us that the Sorting Hat said that she was just as capable of being in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff as Gryffindor, but she chose to be with you idiots. And those three idiots just made her severely distressed. Us girls will go find her."
"No, we'll go get her. We caused the trouble, so we should cheer her up."
"You'll cause more trouble, but I know that if you don't come along now you'll make it worse later. Come on."
There was a pounding of footsteps, so Kate ran into the First Floor girl's bathroom. She turned human and went in a stall and sat there, pulled her legs to her chest, crying. Kate heard someone come in and she saw the smaller figure that was Karley come in through the door crack.
"Kate? Are you okay? I'll just stay out here until you want me to come in." The soft sound of Karley's voice calmed her down a bit, but she was still crying.
She heard a group of people come in, and Angelina's voice. "Hey Karley. Is Kate okay?"
Karley said, "She's not doin' so hot. What happened?"
Then she heard Kennedy. "The boys were apparently fighting over her."
Alicia said, "We know Kate's Hufflepuff side. She doesn't like it when people fight, especially over her."
She heard Lee, "Kate? We're sorry."
One of the twins said, "We didn't mean that!"
Between sobs, Kate shouted, "Get.....OUT! That doesn't....help. Besides, this....is a girl's bathroom!"
The other twin said, "We aren't moving." Kate opened the door, showing them her gray hair and puffy, red eyes.
"You don't want to move," she hissed. "Then don't. Petrificus Totalus!" The boys froze up and and fell to the ground. Kate rolled out of the stall and said, "Can we go. I just want to go work in the dormitory. The stairs have a jinx on them that doesn't let boys up the stairs." She waved her wand and the boys unfroze.
Fred said, "Kate! We're really so-"
Kate held up her hand and he stopped. She turned to the girls and whispered, "I'm gonna run. Can you bring me some food from dinner?" They nodded and she turned to the boys. "If you want to apologize," they nodded quickly, "you have to catch me."
Lee asked, "What?" Kate went dog and growled. She ran and the boys ran after her. Kate ran up the stairs to the Fat Lady, and someone was already going in, so she slipped past them and ran up the stairs. Kate humorously watched as they came up the stairs, only to slip down when the steps turned into a slide. She ran into the dormitory and turned human.
Kate finished her DADA homework right as the other girls came in. Kennedy said, "Oh good! You're done with DADA. I need some help. We got you some food!" Alicia held a plate full with a slab of steak, two baked potatoes, a small salad with lettuce, carrots, radishes, cucumbers, celery, and ranch dressing, and a small bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce.
Kate looked at it longingly and grabbed it quickly saying, "Thanks lots! I'm starved. This DADA homework takes a lot outa you."
She ate the food fast, and they all laughed, but then the room quieted. Angelina said, "But Kate, the boys are really sorry. I think you should just go forgive them."
Kate sighed and begrudgingly said, "I know. I just don't like it when people fight, especially over me. I'll go talk to them." She turned dog and casually walked down the girl's stairs and jumped over onto the boy's stairs. Kate ran up the stairs and and went into the First Year boy's dormitory.
When she turned human inside there, Lee shouted, "Kate!" All the boys, which was only the three of them, came over and hugged her.
George said, "Kate, we're sorry about the fighting. It's just tha-"
Kate interrupted saying, "No, I'm sorry. I was being really stubborn. Tomorrow is the first Saturday, and we're going to pull off the biggest prank this school is has ever seen."
