Kate and Dumbledore went along, and Dumbledore asked, "Do you have your list?"
Kate smiled, her hair turned lilac, and she said, "Professor, I think you should know. I have a photographic memory. I remember everything from when I was three and up. I have the list memorized."
Dumbledore chuckled. "It's always you, isn't it." Kate's hair turned black (confused) and he said, "You're in a wheelchair, amazing at magic, a potential Seer, your family, a Metamorphagus, and have a photographic memory. I've never seen so much. Now, let's go get your things."
They first went to Flourish and Blotts to get her school books. They got all the right school books, and Kate got other books for reading (some Seer books, too. What? She's curious!) . While Dumbledore went to talk to someone in the Leaky Cauldron, Kate went to Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions and got her robes, her pointed black hat, her dragon hide gloves, and her winter cloak; then she bought her pewter, size 2 cauldron, a collapsible telescope, crystal phials, and brass scales. After that, she went and got quills and ink. She was fascinated by the ink that changed color, so she got some. Before she found Dumbledore, she went to the Apothecary and collected potions ingredients.
Dumbledore came back and said, "You look like you have almost everything. Now, what do you have left?"
Kate thought and mumbled, "Phials? Yup. Books? Yup. Oh! I need a pet!"
Dumbledore and Kate went over to Eeylops Owl Emporium and looked inside. Kate rolled over and saw beautiful Screech owl and said, "I'd like that one." But then she thought of Fred, George, Molly; they were all poor, and they'd want an animal, but they couldn't afford it. She said, "Professor, would it be bad to get owls for the Weasleys?"
Dumbledore looked surprised, but then said, "It wouldn't be bad at all." Kate, putting the Screech's cage on her lap, went and picked out two tiny Scops owls for the twins and a barn owl for the family. When she went up to pay at the counter, she pulled out the whopping thirty-five Galleons she owed and went out.
When they were going back to the Leaky Cauldron, Kate stopped and said, "Professor, can we only have one pet?" Dumbledore nodded, but Kate went on. "I would also like a kitten."
Dumbledore quickly said, "Kathryn, only one."
Kate whispered, "Ava loved cats."
Dumbledore was dumbstruck. He thought, Maybe I could bend the rules just a little bit. He nodded and said, "Go get your feline, Miss Smithson. I'll be waiting in the Leaky Cauldron. There'll be a hot chocolate with your name on it."
Kate smiled at his twinkling eyes, and Dumbledore twinkled at her lilac hair. Kate rolled away to Magical Menagerie and went in. The walls were covered floor to ceiling with cages. Kate went to the place with kittens and found a small, inky black one with stunning green eyes. She payed nine Galleons and rolled to the Leaky Cauldron.
When Kate finally got there (it was hard to roll there with all the stuff on her wheelchair), there was a steaming mug next to Dumbledore and a young woman, whom he was eyeing suspiciously. The young woman got up and hugged her. When she was done, the woman smiled and said, "You don't know me, do you? I'm Rita Skeeter, a reporter for the Daily Prophet. I want to do a clip on the prodigy with tragedy for it. Get those bags off ya and relax! It'll only take a minute. Dumbledore insisted on supervisin' the interview so I don't stretch the truth. Now, where were we?"
