Throughout the next couple of months, I realized that more and more of my heart was being taken by Bailey. We had become best friends. Every night I would gaze at Leah's picture, trying to remind myself that my heart belonged to her. But it wasn't working very well. As much as my soul ached for Leah, she was starting to slip away, and I started to like Bailey Amherst.
Things took a dramatic turn one day at the park.
Bailey and I were sitting on the swings. Out of the blue, she asked me to call her Lee, like her parents did because of the end of her name. All the blood drained out of my face because that was Leah's old nickname. But she looked at me with those stunningly blue eyes and I melted.
"Y-yeah. That's a nice nickname," I told her, then looked away as the tears welled up in my eyes.
Don't cry, you baby, I scolded myself. Leah would want you to move on.
"Oh, your phone just gave you a notification," she said as my screen lit up.
I almost choked when I saw the contact name above the alert.
I instantly had a flashback of when Leah snatched my phone out of my hand and put that heart next to her name. She hadn't texted me since before she moved. I eagerly tapped the icon and the message popped up on the screen.
Jake- Please please PLEASE forgive me...
I read the rest of the message and almost cried. She hadn't forgotten about me!
"Jake? Are you okay?"
Oh my God, I thought. What was I supposed to do about Bailey? Was I just supposed to drop all of my feelings for my gorgeous neighbor and stay in my room until Leah came back YEARS later?
