Today is the football game where we decided if we go to the playoffs, which probably won't happen because our school sucks at sports. Also, we have a pep rally for it after lunch. Fun. Right now I'm in the car with Caleb and we're listening to Guns N' Roses and they're amazing. So far my favorites are Sweet Child O' Mine, Paradise City, and Welcome to the Jungle. I think they're becoming my new favorite band. Caleb is in his football jersey and he looks really hot in it. How dare he tease me and look so hot?
We arrive to school and Caleb follows me to my locker, following Emma, but she just ignores Caleb. I don't see how Emma can hate Caleb. Yeah, I know he breaks many girl's hearts, but he never broke her heart and he didn't do anything to her except be nice. I get that he broke Penelope's heart and that's her sister, but Penelope forgave him for it why couldn't Emma.
"Hey Mary, do you mind wearing my number on your face? F-For the game." Caleb stuttered, rubbing the back of his neck. I find it cute when he stutters because he's nervous around me and that's sweet.
Caleb pulls out a sharpie from his back pocket, popping the top off of it. I can feel the cold, wet tip touching my skin, which gave me chills and I can tell he's writing the number seven. He smiles at me as he places the marker back in his pocket. From the corner of my eye, I can see that Emma is giving us a disgusted look.
"Caleb me and Mary need to talk. Girl talk." Emma said, interrupting the awkward silence thankfully.
Caleb nods and goes to his group of friends by the locker. She's either trying to break the awkward silence or talking about how I can tell Caleb how I feel. I made her help me how I can tell him like where we can go and what to say.
"Thankfully, I was here or else you would've killed yourself with your own awkwardness."
"I know." I said, raising my eyebrows and begin opening my locker.
"Okay is there like a place that Caleb goes to like relax or something like that," Emma said, rubbing her knuckles in her palm. Well, there is that little lake for out in the country which has an amazing view of the sky.
"Yeah." I said, nodding.
"Then take him there and tell him you love him." Emma said, placing her hand over her heart.
We walk into our first-hour class, begin talking about me and Caleb's wedding and how she wants to be a bridesmaid for sure. According to Emma, my wedding is going to have a white chocolate fountain, the bridesmaid's dresses are going to be darker pink (in honor of Hello Kitty), and last but not least we're going to get married on the beach. I like little Emma's fantasy, but I'm not sure about the bridesmaid's dresses being dark pink. Dark pink dresses aren't the way to go in my book, maybe like a pale pink not a darker pink like Emma was talking about.
I need to get the topic of wedding out of my head.
Caleb is twirling my hair as I'm eating my food and to be honest, it's making me want to go to sleep on this table. Today we're all sitting in our normal spots and it feels so much better than sitting with the football players. It was so cramped and awkward, particularly when one of Caleb's friends hit on me. Violet is talking to Alex, Penelope is cuddling with Jordan, and I'm talking to Emma so she wouldn't feel alone. Right now we're arguing about the bridesmaids dresses, but Caleb thinks that we're arguing about dresses in general.
"I think dark pink is a good choice especially with your complexion." Emma argued.
"I think the pink you're talking about is hot pink and plus pale pink is so much simpler and cuter." I contended.
Violet and Penelope were looking at us like we're crazy-arguing about dresses. I feel stupid for making such a big deal about it and I can tell Emma does too.
"Y'all are taking this argument a bit too seriously." Violet chuckled, folding her arms.
"You think." Penelope said, looking at Violet.
The bell rings and we all get up to go the gym for the pep rally. Caleb and Jordan merge in on the army of football players on the way to the gym while us females were trying not to get trampled. The cheerleaders are hollering down the halls with the short uniforms and pom poms. It's difficult to imagine that Penelope was one of those screaming down these halls like you are going to die.
Despite them, we make it to the gym, safe and sound, astonishingly and we find a seat right next to the section where the football players sit. The cheerleaders are standing in front of the poster shaking their pom-pom, watching the herd of football players behind it. The band plays the drum roll as the football players tear through the poster and run to their section of the gym. Caleb sees me and he smirks and winks at me which makes me melt inside.
"Okay the first game of the pep rally is Ships and Sailors. We need five from each class."Ms. Montgomery announced through her microphone.
Caleb and Jordan participate following Emma, who trying to make me by pulling my arm. Violet gives me a push to go over there and me and Emma are standing in the middle of the floor.
"Ships. Sailors." Ms. Montgomery announced. I have no idea how to play this game so I have to watch what Emma is doing so I'm not lost like a puppy. "Hit the Deck." We all lay on stomach. There goes my breast. Two football players and a sophomore gets out.
"Ships. Sailors." Ms. Montgomery said through her microphone. "Man overboard."
I get on the ground and Emma places one foot on my back. I see Caleb's foot is on Jordan's back and Jordan looks like he's in pain so Caleb is probably applying pressure on him on purpose since they despise each other. Poor Jordan. A senior and three football players got out this time.
"Three Man Eating."
I get into a group with Jordan and some freshman and we began to act like we were eating. Ms. Montgomery said a command that I didn't listen to and I feel this sudden weight lift from my legs. It's Caleb. I didn't know what this one is called, but I love it and I see that it's Me, Jordan, Caleb, Emma, and another freshman are still in the game. Caleb smiles at me and puts me down slowly, then Ms. Montgomery instructs us to go over there.
"Looks like Freshman wins this game." Ms. Montgomery announced.
Emma and I go back to our seats and I thought it was lame until Caleb lifts me off my feet. I'm in love. Nah. There's no such thing as love at my age-wise words from my mother. The next game is where a cheerleader gives you something to eat and you can't go back to your group until you eat all of it and swallow it. Caleb, Jordan, and Mike go into a group with Juniors and Violet joins the group of Sophomores while I try to calm Emma down so I don't completely make myself flat chested.
I watch as Caleb stuffs a pickle into his mouth and I can distinguish by his face he really doesn't like pickles. He takes another huge bite and I'm worried that he's going to throw up all over the place. Then he shoves the remainder into his mouth and swallows it and goes back to his group to tag Jordan in. I look at Violet and she has to eat a long candy snake that looks like it came in a seven-pound bag. I can hear her trying to eat it and she's gagging so badly. In my mind, I'm crossing my fingers, hoping she won't throw up everywhere, but luckily she didn't. She eats the rest and tags the next person in her line. I would've gag and thrown up if I had to stick that whole thing in my mouth. Bleh.
Violet comes back and I can see that her eyes were a faint shade of red from it watering.
"Are you okay?" I asked, slightly touching her arm.
"Yeah, it was just a lot to eat." she chuckled faintly.
"The Juniors wins this game." Ms. Montgomery proclaimed. The whole stands shake when the football players start to bang and yell when they heard that. Calm down it's just a stupid game. "To finish off our last pep rally of the year we're going to need the football players to stand in the middle of the floor. Then everyone else can join them and we're going to chant."
The football players run to the middle of the floor and then Emma rushes me over there.
I'm in a bundle between a couple of football players and a cheerleader who smells like really sweet vanilla which makes me want to gag. I just stand there until I feel this sudden weight lift once again and it's Caleb. Again. He put me on his shoulders and there chanting something that I can't even make out. I'm on Caleb's shoulders. I'm so high up. Penelope is screaming on top of Jordan's shoulders with a cheerleader bullhorn and I start brushing my hand on the back of Caleb's hair without thinking about it. This is want it feels like to date a football player then that's all I want to date.
After they finished chanting, Caleb puts me down and now my feet feel weird on the ground. I am going to tell Caleb something, but I get interrupted by a football player dumping gold glitter on my head. Mike and Joe. They laughs obnoxiously and jogs away with a empty bucket. I shake my head and a ton of glitter falls out of my hair and onto the ground.
“You too." someone chuckled.
I look up to see that Penelope's hair is filled with gold glitter too, and she's trying to brush it out of her hair with her fingers. She meets up with Violet, who is waiting in the entryway.
"They thought you were my girlfriend so they did this." Caleb chuckled, dusting my shoulders off. "I'll see you tonight?"
"Of course." I said.
Caleb smiles at me, meeting his friend then I felt this pull on my arm behind me. Emma of course, who else would it be.
"You just got glittered." Emma squealed, putting her arm around my shoulder, sighing. If she wants I can show up at her front door and throw glitter in her face and run away like I didn't do it. I won't have a problem with that at all. She should love that she doesn't have go through hell to get the glitter out of her hair. I love that they were sweet enough to dump a bucket of glitter on me, but afterwards it just trouble to get out. "Y'all are going to be together forever."
I rewrite Caleb's number with eyeliner to support him and I'm probably so overdressed for a football game. I'm wearing a white shirt with no strings or sleeves and black pockets, black mid-sleeve jacket with some black jeans, black boots with a small heel. This is definitely overdressed and Caleb is probably going to think I'm trying too hard. At least I got all the glitter out-it was hell, but I got it out. My ring tone goes off and makes jump ten feet.
Emma: We're here:)
I smile at her text and put my phone in my back pocket. I go out of my room, kiss my mother on the cheek, and run to the car who has Emma and Penelope. My mother would've never taken me if she knew that I was going to support Caleb. She thinks that he's bad news from all the times he's played Natasha and messed with other girls but maybe he has changed. I doubt it, but I like him too much to actually give a damn. I can see #8 on Penelope's cheek, written in eyeliner just like mine in the rear view mirror, I guess we both got the same idea.
I get out of the car with Emma's arm twisted with mine and I pay my way in. Emma follows me to get me some popcorn, a burger, and a powerade, the burger and powerade is for Caleb of course. I can eat a lot, but I don't think I'm going to finish my popcorn to eat the burger anyways. We find Penelope in the stands and I sit right between Emma and Penelope. I see Caleb stretching in his tight, black football pants that makes him look ten times hotter. Then he practices throwing the ball and the person would catch it every-time. He should be a quarterback.
The buzzer goes off for the game to start. The cheerleaders hold up another poster for the football players to go through and when they come out, our school's band started playing the drums. Everyone is standing up cheering while I'm just sitting down just being awkward. The other team comes out of their posters and their outfits are really cool. The main color is a dark gray and the secondary color is a royal blue-it looks pretty chill. They start lining in their position on the sidelines and I see that Jordan is on the side which is weird. I actually thought he would've played something major like safety or something. As I'm shoving the buttery popcorn into my mouth, I see Caleb lining up with the ball in his hands. He is a quarterback! How come I didn't know that? I'm going to be dating a quarterback? Dude talk about luck.
Caleb throws the ball to a guy with a number twenty-eight jersey on and he almost makes a touchdown but he got tackled. Emma is screaming, really getting into this game. I never thought that Emma liked football or could ever get into it. I push her shoulder down to make her sit and calm herself. She's so worked up that her face is as red as bloodshot eyes and she's probably going to lose her voice after tonight.
The buzzer goes off for half time and we get to watch cheerleaders shake their asses off. Joy. They're dancing to some pop song that I never heard of before and I don't ever want to know because it's probably stupid like the rest of them. Natasha is working it while the others follow her and you can tell that they're trying not to look like they don't know what they're doing. I know that feeling.
The song ends and the football players make their way back on the field. Finally. I'm starting to get tired and my popcorn isn't even half way gone. My eyes try to close on their own, but I fight as hard as I can to keep them open so I can see Caleb play. Caleb is taking a break and getting a sip of water. Jordan finally makes his way onto the field and it looks like he's defending. Penelope is biting her lip and rubbing her knuckles out of excitement. The quarterback throws the ball and Jordan tackles the guy with the ball.
"Good job, baby!" Penelope shouted, and me and Emma start laughing. Never took Penelope as a screamer especially in front of people.
Penelope sits back down, not noticing that we're laughing at her.
The game is over and I make my way to Caleb who's talking to his friends, Joe and Mike by the field goal post. We won 12 to 2 and I guess we're really not that bad, let's hope we make it further than the first round of the playoffs. Caleb leaves his friends and I hand him his burger and Powerade.
"Mary, you didn't have to." he said, grabbing his food and puts it in his helmet. I'm admiring how good he looks in those pants and I hope Caleb doesn't notice because I don't want to stop staring.
I see Penelope and Emma with Jordan and they're laughing at something. Caleb puts his helmet on the ground and looks at me.
I look at him as he gets closer and grabs my hand. I grin at the warmth from his glove with my hand and looks at my lips as I look at his. He cups my face with his warm gloves and presses his lips against his. The feel of his lips, I miss it like crazy and now I'm glad that I fell for Caleb all over again. His lips are so soft and they still taste like mint under all the sweat. Caleb pulls away and I feel my lips where his were and my stomach is filled with butterflies. That was the kiss. The kiss I've been wanting all along. Passion.
"You did great tonight." I said.
Caleb laughs, giving me a quick peck on my lips.
