10. ~Chapter Nine~
Snow was sleeping and I was wide awake.
My father would be coming home tonight and I was waiting up for him.
You could hear the crickets in the forest and a slight breeze play along the leaves of the oaks and maples.
It was quiet and clear tonight.
It seemed like the perfect night for hiding and I knew that we were all well hidden in the deepest part of the forest.
My head jerked in the direction of the door as it slowly opened.
My father had just come back from a hunt for a lost prisoner, two kingdoms over.
He was wide awake even though he had been traveling for awhile.
"Demetri, what are you doing up?" He asked, slightly frowning.
"We have a very bad situation." I said as he looked into my eyes.
"What's going on?" My father asked.
"Let me show you...." I stood up and motioned for him to follow me quietly.
Taking him to my bedroom's door, I opened it slowly and silently.
Inside, on my bed, was Snow sound asleep.
My fathers eyes widened. "The princess?"
"She's part of it." I whispered, closing the door.
We went back into the kitchen and he sat at the table with me.
"While you were away, Queen Claudia sent for me. She needed a huntsman. When I arrived ready to take on the mission, I was shocked to find out that it was the princess she was after." I say.
"Why?" He asked concerned.
"Claudia has this mirror--A magic one!" I said. "It told her that Snow White was the fairest in the land and Claudia wants to be in Snow's place...She wants Snow White dead, only then will Claudia be the fairest in the land."
My father's eyes widen. "Fooling with magic....Has consesquences..." His eyes meet mine in fear. "Something must be done. The girl has never been a trouble maker or such--She's supposed to take the throne for goodness sakes!"
"I know, but Claudia wants to remain on the throne and be like Snow White." I say. "And right now, she really ticked off."
"Why? What did you do?" My father asks in a You-Better-Tell-Me voice.
I smiled. "Instead of killing Snow and placing her heart in a box, I killed a deer and placed it in th box. By the time I left, I think she figured out that the heart in the box was not that of Snow's.....But of a deer."
"This is good....That's why all the knights are patrolling the kingdom tonight......They're everywhere." He says standing up and pacing.
"I had to get out of that situation. I had told Snow earlier to run away, as far as she could! I had a feeling that mother would find her, but I wasn't expecting that feeling to be true." I say.
He nods. "You're mother is a very good huntress....Excellent finding skills."
"What are we going to do?" I ask.
"If she's using magic now, then that means that she's dealt with it before....I don't think a war against the knights and such would be very wise....She could have them under a spell or something." He says.
"So that they are all loyal to her and her only?" I ask, trying to wrap my mind around it.
"Yes." He says. "In order to take them out of the trance, we'll need to figure out the one thing that could cure them...."
"One thing that would be rare to find--Or at least so thought...." I say.
"Or maybe, extremely close but never thought of...." My father says eyeing my bedroom door.
"What are you----"
"Winter Snow White's blood is the deepest of red, or so they say....The blood could be the cure for Queen Claudia's knights." He says.
"Not alot, just a drop for each knight." He says.
"Two hundred and seven knights...." I try doing the math but come up with nothing very reasonable.
"It should take less than a half cup and if we need more, we can come and get it. Losing that much blood won't hurt her. It may make her weak but it won't hurt her." He says.
I sigh, nodding.
"We'll have to try it...But only if she's ok with it." I say.
"I'm quite sure she will be, considering that she's trying to stay hidden." He says.
Snow was innocent, yet she was being tortured by her own stepmother.
She had not done anything, yet death was the promise the queen had inflicted upon her.
