The Ridgalite

The Rigalite focuses on the People who lived in Marina Avenue in the Ridges Estate in North Shields. Eddie Saint owns the Roaring venture a trawler moored at the fish quay- his crew work hard and play hard - one of them is Ron Lee a young lad who has aspirations of becoming a rock star. He was in the Royal Navy on board the HMS Illustrious as a trained chef before joining the trawler boat. The lads all tell him that his songs are crap because they don't wan't to lose a good cook. The story also tells of two rival shop keepers- Ronnie Hancock and Billy Burston have been each others throats for years- read the comic antics of both men. "The Ridgalite is an insite of life in the early sixties on an an estate with high unemployment and little hope - where every day is a constant struggle. There are some though who prove that if you have hope then dreams can come true.

“Mother says you smell like a puffter.”

“Well at least she didn’t say that she didn’t like me.’

“Where are we going by the way?’

“Well Ron Lee is playing tonight at the Chirton Club we could go there if you like.’

“Okay; will your friends be there?’

“I expect so; we like to support Ron.’

They took the car and drove towards Chirton and continued the conversation as she drove away.

“He’s very good you know; you should encourage him.’

“What and lose the best cook the boat has ever had.’

Ron has to find his way in the world you know; it would be cruel to hang onto him when he has so much talent.’

“I guess you’re right; the day will come when he will go full time with his band.’

Everyone has a destiny Doug, even you. We are all on a journey on this earth and no matter what comes our way we cannot deviate from its path.

“Do you know what your destiny is Paula?’

I think I am here to lead people to better things. Jesus told Simon the fisherman who became a disciple. “Be a fisher of men.” What he meant was spread the word of God to all around you.’

What would you like to be?’

“I would like to do a degree in theology.’

“Really’ and become like a priest?’

“No; but I would like to go and do missionary work in Africa.’

“What is stopping you then?’

“Who would look after my mother; she is getting on now and I wouldn’t like to leave her on her own.’

“By what I’ve seen, your mother is quite capable of looking after herself. I think that you should enrol for University and follow what is in your heart.’

Paula smiled at Doug then said maybe I will one day.’ anyway what about you?’

“Me, whey I would like to captain my own boat one day. I have been saving up you know and I have a fair bit saved up.’

“How much would it cost to buy a boat?’

“At least twenty grand then there’s the nets and other equipment so there’s another ten thousand.’

It is not beyond the realms of possibility though is it Doug.’

“My Grand parents left me a bit of money when they died and I was going to buy a house with it.’

“If you bought a good second hand boat you could make enough to buy a house too with the right crew behind you.”

“You know you inspire me Paula Becks; you make me want to be a better man.’

“One day you will,’ I can see it in your eyes.’

They pulled outside of the club and the band was unloading the equipment from the van. “Hi Ron said Doug.’

“Hey man thanks for coming; the lads kept you a seat down at the front so just get yourself in.’

“Paula; would you just go in for a moment I want a word with Ron.’

“I will wait for you inside.’

“Thanks’ pet.’

“What’s going on asked Ron?’
