The Roaring Venture was brought to a halt one hour after shooting the net slowly the net was hauled in; the signs were good thought Sainty, as there was quite a weight in the net. But when it was brought on board they found that they had got entangled with someone’s net. It had been cut away and discarded. It took the men over three hours to separate the old netting from their own. Three hours of valuable fishing time and very little to show for their efforts. The Net had to be stored on board then got rid of because if it were thrown back it would only entangle someone else’s net.
The men were now grumpy in mood and it took Ron Lee to lift their spirits with a nice curry he had cooked. They sat around the table hardly saying a word until Des Baldwin added extra curry powder to Vince Maccionocchi’s plate of food at first Vince never said anything as he was always boasting about the hot curries that he’d eaten all over India when he was in the merchant navy. Des had added four Ghost Chillies which were one hundred and fifty times hotter than jalapenos. Everyone sat looking at Vince as he shovelled in mouthful after mouthful of the curry. Then the heat hit him his lips and face began to change colour and the sweat began to pour down his face.
“What’s the matter Vince; is that curry a bit too spicy for you?’
“No, no, replied Vince as he took a sip of water and grabbed another naan bread to mop up the curry sauce and hopefully take away the furnace that was now burning not only his mouth but his stomach as well. After eating only a third of the curry Vince turned to Ron and asked him how much curry paste he had used.’
“Just the usual matey, it’s not too hot for you is it?’
“No it just seems a bit different from other curries that you have made in the past.’
“Really, said Ron keeping a straight face.’
“Well I’m having some more said Des as he filled his plate up and added some chips as well.
Not one to take defeat easily Vince carried on eating. Eddie and everyone else sat just chatting away until Vince had finished his meal.’
He stood up then went to the larder where he took out a bottle of milk and drank it down but the heat in his mouth and gut persisted.
“After dinner they hauled the nets in and Vince set about gutting the fish, the smell became unbearable and his stomach heaved and he was sick over the side.’
“Not feeling well, said Des,’
“It must have been the milk it was on the turn I think.’
“I was going to say; there was nothing wrong with that curry wasn’t there lads?’
All throughout the day Vince struggled; then his bowels started he had to run to the toilet before he defecated all over. The lads could hear him as his anus that was on fire voided the curry he’d eaten. The lads were laughing like hell as he came out holding his arse.
“Hey you don’t look well mate; I would go have a lie down in your cabin if I were you. “
“No I will be aal….Shit; Vince ran to the toilet again and just made it. The lads were creasing themselves as they heard him crying out in pain.’
“No one would let on that his curry had been spiked because Vince had a hell of a temper on him and he would have gutted Des if he’d known.
Back and forth Vince excused himself.’
The pain only subsided when Des got him a pot of natural yogurt and told him to eat it. You better rub this on your arse as well as he added as he handed him a jar of Vaseline.
