Sometimes, things are meant to be. And sometimes they're not. Unfortunately, the difference isn't always clear. And accepting that things aren't meant to be can be difficult. Sometimes, it's nearly impossible. ob·ses·sion: /əbˈseSHən/ noun *the state of being obsessed with someone or something. *a ruling/consuming passion. 2. Ch 1 - June 13, 3013

"Oh, Hell no," Traci yelled to me over the blaring music of the band on the stage. She held up her phone so that I could see it as well. "Ashton, the drummer, is the only one who's legal. As in only 18. The lead singer is 16, and the other two are 17."

"Oh my God. Never mind." But I still had my eye on the purple haired guy. Though, I was too ashamed to admit it.

I mean, it was bad enough that I adored the One Direction guys. I felt the need to keep that attraction under wraps, except with Traci, because she was in the same boat as me: a professional, otherwise mature, full grown adult crushing on boys who were... well... younger. But as far as anyone else knew, I was just into their cheesy pop music. And that was all they needed to know.

I totally blame everything on Traci. She's the one who insisted I see 1D with her because she had no one else to go with. It didn't take much convincing, though, because I loved concerts. And besides that, Traci and I had become best friends over the past year, bonding over our love for the popular 80's/90's group, New Kids On The Block. And any time we hung out, it was a blast.

So, during those several months between the time we bought the tickets and the day of the concert, I listened to and fell in love with the music of One Direction. Traci would send me a video here and there, urging me to watch them. The more I watched, the more I was reminded of a certain other group (New Kids), and how I fell in love with them as a young girl. And it was happening again, like deja vu.

I can't say what it was that attracted me to the guy I'd eventually learn was named Michael. But he was adorable, in a weird, kind of dorky way. I always did tend to fall for the odd ones.

I think it had something to do with the fact that I'd always felt like an oddball myself. I never really did fit in anywhere. Back in school, I was one of those people who blended into the background. I wasn't disliked or anything, just overlooked. And I wasn't super shy, but I also wasn't very outspoken. I had plenty of friends who were just like me. And I only dated one guy; the one I ended up marrying.

Without going into the boring details, I'll just say that I finally got tired of his shit, and we separated while I was pregnant with my son, Ashton. And we divorced right after he was born. Just to clarify, my Ashton was born before I knew 5SOS existed, so no, he wasn't named after Ashton Irwin. I also had a daughter named Molly. She was four, and Ashton was one when this journey started.

So there Traci and I were, at the concert we'd waited so many months for, when 5 Seconds Of Summer took the stage. Traci mentioned that she kind of liked the music they were playing, and she thought the bassist was cute. I felt a little less crazy after her admission.

"Let's check them out," she said, pulling out her phone while they were performing a cover of Katy Perry's Teenage Dream.

That's when she relayed the unfortunate news of their ages. And that was the end of that. We tend to like younger guys, seeing as we feel so young ourselves, but we do have limits.

"Well, they have some catchy music, though," she stated.

"For sure. It's probably a good thing they're teenagers. We're emotionally involved with too many bands as it is. We don't really need another obsession. But we can still enjoy the music."

So she put the phone away, and we did just that: enjoyed the music. At least, that's all it amounted to until the next time...

A/N: If the fact that the girls are older than the guys bothers you, don't let it. You can imagine them any age you want! Age isn't really pertinent. I just like to write about things I can relate to, plus I've found there aren't a lot of stories out there that don't involve high school. Also, the boys won't be this young throughout the story, only in this chapter. Just clarifying those things. :)

Like I said, I know it's not starting off with a bang or anything. And this chapter is short. But we have to make it through the obligatory character introductions first. Stick with me and I promise things will get pretty interesting. I think you'll be surprised at the direction this story goes... ;)
